That's what I wondered, often it's hard to go to an earlier game in a series as the latter versions often improve on technology and gameplay and they learn from their previous iterations (there are obviously a lot of exceptions to that, of course). I am curious about heist, but Dig 2 is more what i'm after. Think a Metroidvania is the itch that needs scratching basically.

You need Axiom Verge if you've not already played it.

One more potential purchasing question before this sale’s over - does the SEGA Ages Sonic 2 offer anything fancy for someone who likes it but already has the MegaDrive Collection? I’m not one of those Digital Foundry cunts who notices a few frames of input lag btw

It adds a few 'easy mode' options (e.g. starting with Super Sonic, only losing half rings on contact), the ability to play as Knuckles, optional ring-based leaderboard mode, the option to add the Sonic Mania drop dash move, and a mini time attack mode. It is, as ever, a nice conversion.

I will probably try Axiom verge but I was initially a little put off by the 8/16 bit graphics. It's become a bit too prolific, a bit of a cliche. It's not a novelty any more and I'm a little bored of it.

This is not to say I refuse to play, I've enjoyed Celeste, I am loving Akane. It's just a comment really - why are the Hollow Knights and Ori's so few and far between. Are people doing it due to a lack of ability / budget or are they doing it because people think it's cool to be low res?

In fairness to Axiom Verge, it's five years old now. I empathise with your broader point, though.

I went on a bit of a spree recently picking up anything that looked half decent and was heavily discounted, so was a lot less discriminating than I'd usually be about game purchases.

Trying them out I'm realising that a lot of them, while decent, are pretty much the same experience.

Enter the Gungeon, Skelly Selest, Mana Spark, Bit Dungeon, Blazing Beaks.. Did I really need any of these when I've already played Nuclear Throne on Vita? My honest opinion is that Enter The Gungeon is the only one of the bunch that I'm glad I bought.

I've actually enjoyed some of the real bargain bin stuff the most out of the games I bought on sale lately. Biolab Wars, Space Dave (Woah Dave on vita is more addictive though), Q-Yo Blaster,Don't Die Mr Robot, Bleed 2. Just simple arcadey fun.

Bought some slightly less cheap games too on sale, Ni No Kuni, Hyperlight Drifter, Grip, Jamestown, Rise Race the Future. Now I just have to play them ;)

After getting burnt on Dragon's Dogma and Kine, I thought I'd just bite the bullet and relapse into Civ addiction by purchasing all expansions for the switch. It's clunky, it's slow, it's glitchy, it's absolutely glorious!

That was me done then, no more purchases this sale, except everyone here had to go on about Gris some more, so I got that as well.

I bought it physically for about a tenner over a year ago. I don't think I've ever loaded the game.

If you ever want rid, let me know. I think I am the only person who actually likes it.

Got that from Smyths on 3DS for a tenner ages ago, I understand it's better than the Switch one? I dunno, I've never played either.

Bought Valfaris because £13 is a very good price.

It seems excellent so far.

I accidentally pre-ordered Dungeon of the Endless a couple of nights ago. Bradigor had me interested when talked it up and the reviews were great. Got a bit of a shock when I went to play and realised it unlocked on the 15th. Never mind, I think, I can wait a couple of days.

Playable from 15/05/2020

I mean, people will generally opt for an aesthetic that they themselves like of their ability, while being achievable. And for the smallest teams, that does lend itself to an artstyle with low pixel count and fewer frames to draw.

To illustrate that point:

Yeah, Hollow Knight was astonishing for its team size. Even so, its developer was still four times the size of Axiom Verge's development 'team', one of which a dedicated artist (Ari) - it's hard to overstate what a difference that makes.

And, again, personal preference is a thing. I prefer Axiom Verge's look to Hollow Knight's (even as I think Hollow Knight is gorgeous), and e.g. thought that Blazing Chrome was one of the best looking games to come out last year, and that's a total 16-bit-as-you-remember-it experience.

Fuck me. Valfaris is brilliant. It looks incredible and the bosses are tricky but fair.

Brilliant weapons too!

Is the team's other stuff good too?

Haven't played it but as far as I know Slain is similar but not as good. Seems it doesn't have the variety of Valfaris' weapons and such.

Picross S1, S2 and S3 are all on sale before the release of S4 next week. 20% off each. :)

I've got a fair bit of S1 still to get through but considering these never get a discount and I will play them all, they're both getting bought!

Thanks for the heads up.
