Nintendo eShop (Software Chatter)

Lock down fever meant I coughed up the £18 for surprise release Good Job yesterday - initial play is positive. Nintendo published but don't know the story behind the game itself, is it in-house or did they assist a 3rd party.

It's one of these physics sandbox puzzle type affairs but with a level of Nintendo polish applied which makes it fun and not super fiddly to play (these things are often so fiddly).

Control of your character is lovely and 'free' without being sloppy and you can either carefully tread around the office aiming for as little damage as possible to achieve your goals, or just create havoc doing so.

Initial floor missions involve rounding up missing workers for a meeting (you can wheel them nicely back in their chairs or setup catapults using power cables and fire them thru walls), rerouting and connecting the internet (this requires a couple of small obstacles to be overcome on the way).

It's got a lovely clean aesthetic and could be good.

Seems it was a 3rd party

It looked interesting in the Direct. Is the idea that you get the objective done by hook or by crook, even if you smash everything up, or are you rewarded for doing so 'cleanly', so to speak?

levels get separate score based on time/damage that then get combined into an overall score

you can cause utter mayhem for a faster time (which may score ok) or carefully pick thru a level being as clean as possible.

Looks interesting... Always worried that these sort of games will be over very quickly - any idea of how many levels etc?

think one of the reviews I linked mentions the number of floors, at 4 levels per floor. The complexity ramps up as you go along so levels should take longer.

length/value always subjective, I can't see it being Animal Crossing or Zelda like in how long its around for, my initial thought is that its a nice little game though for quick blasts.

The puzzles in Good Job are already far better crafted than Goose I'd say, goose was funny but it was often trying to discover the one thing that you had to do to make something work, this is more sandbox.

Second floor in logistics and I'm controlling a sky crane thing and now let loose on forklifts in a warehouse - its really good. I've been sat for 10-15m trying to see how to do the first forklift level and finally twigged it.

Is it single player only?

From Polygon:

Good Job! also supports same-system co-op for two players. The game plays exactly the same way, but having a second character with a second set of hands means you can solve puzzles slightly faster, assuming everyone is on the same page. Which, if you’ve ever played a physics-based co-op game, is a hard no. And yet, even when things go very poorly, Good Job!’s raucous calamities remain infinitely entertaining. The game is often at it’s best when your attempts are at their worst.

I haven't got yet but might grab it later.

Played it on Apple Arcade. It has some good writing and looks lovely, but ultimately I found it rather tiresome.

Cheers. I nearly bought it yesterday but I've got so many other games to play. I'll wait for a bigger discount, I think.

I did what none of us should ever do and pre-ordered a game based on the eshop page alone: In Other Waters. The art grabbed me, then the write up sold me. Sounds like you're a 2D deep-sea-diving Darwin mapping an alien ocean and researching its lifeforms using HUD-focussed biology tools. Might be awesome, might suck, but it's almost worth it already for the gorgeous Switch icon. It's like the cover of one of those SF Masterworks paperback novels:

Yeah game, icon, very nice, whatever - I had no idea Korg Gadget was on Switch! Worth it? Does it have any kind of MIDI or audio export that I can send to another DAW?

It's a lot of fun and you can put together proper compositions with it, as evidenced by this Youtube user:

There's still no official song export option unfortunately (other than doing it through the headphone jack, I guess) but you can export songs using QR codes if you have KORG Gadget for iOS according to their site.

I love it anyway. It's a lot of fun to tinker around with. I got it on sale, so maybe wait till it's discounted again at some point?

iOS maybe, it’s never been on a DS. I can’t think of any reason it would be different from any other music production tool? You can do what you want with it.

Gadget specifically hasn't, no, but KORG software was released on the DS.

Yeah there were a couple or three. Again, I don’t think there’s any restrictions on what you could do with the output of it, it’s like buying a music DAW or synth on your computer (eg Gadget, I suppose!), what you make with it is yours to do with as you want.

Why have I never heard of Pong Quest before?

Quote

Publisher Atari and developer Chequered Ink have announced PONG Quest, an RPG based on the classic virtual table tennis game. It will launch for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC via Steam this spring for $14.99.

“PONG as an RPG is something completely unexpected, but wonderful in execution,” said Atari COO Jean-Marcel Nicolai in a press release. “We are thrilled to bring PONG Quest to life to honor the classic IP and bring the beloved gameplay to a new generation of players and RPG fans. Atari has a rich portfolio of titles and exploring new ways to breathe new life into those franchises yields exciting results.”

Looks mental and awesome in equal parts.
