A high stability and magic resist shield (e.g. Crest Shield or Havel/Artorias shield if you've got the stats) makes Manus far more manageable. He's not *easy*, but if you can negate any of his attacks you'll have a far better time with him, even when solo.

It’s done. Gwyn is dead. I’m still slightly shaking - I’d almost convinced myself it couldn’t be done.

A combination of - rolling into him when he does the big leap forward and hitting him, plus dodging his grab attack and smashing him with a heavy strike. My base attacks were doing about 300 damage, so once I realised I had to dodge all his other attacks and wait for my 2 openings, it was pretty straightforward.

I’m free! I can play other games now! :D

Nah, seriously though, a great game indeed. Having played Bloodborne first, I still prefer it’s focus on dodging and aggression, and the world in general, but this was a really memorable experience. The pride in having overcome bosses like Gwyn or Smough & Ornstein will stay with me for a long time!

I had a look back through the thread. I don't want to be that guy but Manus took me three goes. My strategy was always the same: hit them as hard and as fast as you can and don't give them a chance to do anything. Manus was like the Four Kings in that regard. Just whale on them.

I like you @squirtle, I respect you. But you are being that guy. ;)

I’m at peace with my Manus performance.

Sorry. I didn't mean to be. But if it's a strategy you haven't tried, be light, black sword +5 and just run at him and hit the fuck out of him.

It’s been exactly a month since my last update - I’m struggling to find the enthusiasm to keep plugging away at this point - but I did fire it up and had a run at Knight Artorias this morning. I say run - it turned into a 4-hour marathon, with most of that time spent running from the bonfire to the boss. Frustrating? At times. Hardest boss yet? Undoubtedly. Dead as a door nail? Eventually. :D

It took a long time to read him well enough to know when to attack. He’s extremely fast and dodges most openings - I had to read online that his AOE attack also gives him a stat boost, which explains why he was one-shotting me so frequently. I switched to using the unwieldy Zweihander, for the extremely high damage, which brings its own challenge in a fight with such a fast enemy, but my regular sword would frequently leave me out of range for a hit and made the fight last too long - perseverance paid off, as I two-handed him his ass with the bug gun.

Would quite like the game to be finished soon, though, I must say.

Artorias is one of those fights that feels incredibly pressured the first few goes. But after you learn to read it Artorias almost seems slow because the openings are obvious.

Pretty sure I never beat Manus without help, though did whack Kalmeet in the bum on my own.

I beat up Manus on the Cairnryan to Belfast ferry and then went and immediately sorted out Kalameet on the same crossing. Pair of them were acting rowdy at the bar.

Kalameet! That boss has always given me trouble and that was with a cleric knight and lightning spears.

All this chat made me resume my NG Cleric Knight run yesterday, mostly SP but with a bit of very nice jolly cooperation. Got through Sen's and Anor Londo and got what I needed so I can get the Mace to +15 afterwards :)

I've finished the game a few times on PS3/Switch (lost my save in error when transferring to a Lite) and I must say...I had a rip roaring time with it.

One thing I was wondering with something like the Cleric Knight build, do folk stop at the levels (ie : STR 30/END 35 etc) so it makes it easier to play with others in subsequent playthroughs or do you keep hammering away to improve them and get to a much higher SL? I know there's soft ceilings in the leveling for STR etc so was just wondering.

Managed to get to

Spoiler

Anor Londo

over the weekend. That’s a great reveal. So pleased I’ve managed to avoid seeing much in the way of spoilers for this game over the years.

Currently getting messed up by

Two Royal Knights up on the outside of Gwyn’s castle/wotsit.

They are a pain in the arse at the minute. Feel I could be stuck here a while.

I started a fresh soul level 1 run on this as I pine for something to play while waiting for Elden Ring. Still such a great game. Its actually been long enough that my memory is a bit hazy in where some of the key items are! Nice. Made good headway and have beelined to gargoyles, downed them easily with a +5 battle axe bought from Andre. Took a sneaky route through darkroot to blighttown, but was gutted I couldn't get back up to firelink that way without the master key. Bums! I need that large ember from the depths, man!

Also @geldra welcome!

Imagine having the whole of fromsoft's output waiting to be played like that! So jealous.

thanks!  Yeah I’m very aware of ER’s imminent release and I’m hoping to get through this soon (ish) to get in on the wonder of everyone else not knowing ER inside out.

However, I am debating if I should just play through the other Souls (and BB) in sequence so I can appreciate the progression in the game’s mechanics and look etc.  It may mean I won’t get to ER for a decade though.

I think playing them through in release order is a nice idea - it could well be difficult to go back to play something like Dark 2 after playing Elden Ring!

Though at the same time, being in on the hype and adventures is one of the best things ever, too.. ❤️

Oh god it's nearly time for everyone to share stories and things again!! :D

If you want to play them in sequence you best abandon your current DS run and hop over to Demon's Souls ;)

I'd save Demon's (PS5) til last!  :)  (I've still not played the PS5 version, sadface)

Funny actually, I think the only one which feels 'wrong' and old is Dark 2, I've still not managed to play through Scholar of the First Sin!

That's because DaS2 "feels" off! Because.. It is! Everything about the movement, attack animations, everything is just "off". Honestly, I would strongly recommend not playing 2 straight after 1, as it feels to wrong.

whereas 3 feels right for la k of a better term.

Don't get me wrong, 2 can still be good, the dlc especially, but, it has a 'b' vibe too it,  as it was made by the b team.

Demons soul, originalish (pc emu), still plays great though!

I had read about DaS2 being a bit wonky compared to the rest. I’ll probs still give it a whirl at some point.

Anyway, my focus is on this and to be honest I’m already looking forward to playing through this again but with a different character type.

DS2 was my first From game. So to me everything else feels "off". I bloody love the bones of the thing. B team or not it's still a great experience.

As far as I can recall, you can just run straight past all of the knights. This is a good idea initially, particularly the ones near the boss door of the area. Those ones are worth farming once you've a suitable bonfire for titanite chunks.

You don't necessarily have to fight - it's worth remembering just legging it is an option

After you complete DaS I'd highly recommend playing Bloodborne as it is the absolute zenith of the style and, as a bonus, is set in a world that is much more interesting than the fairly standard fantasy of the Souls series. It's a bit janky as it is the only one that still can only be played at 30fps but is so, so good that should be forgotten soon enough.

After that I'd get in on Elden Ring before mopping up Das 2 and 3 sometime in the future (maybe break them up with Sekiro as that is a pure gem of a game with some very fine refining of the formula and in a glorious new environment). It's worth pointing out that all the DLC for all the games should be considered essential.

Like @robdood I am always immensely envious of those experiencing these games for the first time.
