Visual Novels - What should we play?

Code: Realize is out on the Switch. It's ridiculously expensive in the eshop, but the physical version is out in a couple of weeks and seems more reasonably priced. I played it on the Vita a few years ago and really enjoyed the Steampunk London asthetic. Definitely worth a look.

Looks like a million VNs in the PSN Big In Japan sale at the moment. I'm going to add the Nonary Games to my collection following recommendations from @Jolly and a couple of other dudes over the past year.

What happened to your 'one game a month' rule? :quote:

Heads up folks, big PSN sale on some of the top visual novel games we've talked about in this thread. Nonary Games bundle (Thats Zero escape 1 and 2 for 15 quid ), the Danganronpa series, Steins Gate, Shibuya Scramble (7 quid!) and more are dirt cheap right now. The sale is called "Big in Japan" on the Store.

I'm right toward the end of 428 Shibuya Scramble now (probably do a post with thoughts when I'm done, I know you're all on the edge of your seats) but just a small warning to anyone that's powered by anxiety like myself; parts of the story do draw certain parallels with the real world at the moment. It's a testament to the game and my own bloody-mindedness that I'm carrying on, but you may be more comfortable buying it in the sale and then waiting for all this *motions outside* to die down a bit. So to speak.

There are a couple of visual novels in the Switch Sale at the moment which piqued my interest, was wondering if anybody here had any experience witht them:

Tokyo Dark https://www.nintendo.co.uk/Games/Nintendo-Switch-download-software/Tokyo-Dark-Remembrance--1671763.html

Death Mark https://www.nintendo.co.uk/Games/Nintendo-Switch/Death-Mark-1464057.html

I've had Tokyo Dark on my Steam wishlist for ages so am also interested to hear thoughts on it :)

Not exactly what you were asking for, but you might want to look at the current Humble Square Enix bundle, which includes Tokyo Dark in its £8 tier. Obviously not worth it over the Switch version for a 9p saving alone, but if anything else in there takes your fancy it's probably worth a punt.

Death Mark I have started but it didn't grab me completely, I will go back to it though. I decided to launch into 428 Shibuya Scramble today and it's mad as a box of frogs. I've just been through the first 1 hour block and opened up more characters to muck about with. The tutorials surprised me by being helpful and chatty in tone. Good game so far.

I bought a couple of others in the Big in Japan sale as well. Steins Gate Elite, Chaoschild and Worldend Syndrome. Figured that I could do with some VNs to get me through this lockdown rather than just watching TV

Right just done the first part of Death Mark. It's classically japanese creepy, you know the drill, lots of quiet footsteps and noises and something quickly appearing and disappearing. Translation is mostly good, just a few curiousities (constantly referring to a boy as they instead of he for example). Lots of point and click elements, although the controls are a little wonky in parts (I died in one place because had limited actions, and tried to instantly use the tool in the correct place, rather than exmaining it first and then using the tool). When you die you're taken back to your last decision, but you can also save regularly (except during the long story sections- only start the game if you have 20 minutes to get to the point you assume control).

Honestly, no way would I pay however much it's meant to cost, but for £11 so far I'd say it's worth it.

edit- and the occasional graphic sexualised imagery which suprised me when I first saw it. So that's a content warning.

And sort of completed. I'd say if you like creepy ghost stories buy it on sale. I actually really quite enjoyed it. The atmosphere demands you play it at night with headphones, what with it beig a bunch of ghost stories and all, so it took a while, and the translation in chapter 4 is dreadful (thank goodness for gamefaqs), but it's a daft slice of Japanese horror. The occasional bout of male gaze and uneccesary sexualised imagery, to the point of parody, and the effect on the actual spirits is awful when compared to the still images, but it held my interest enough to the point where I'm replaying it to get the final chapter (spoilers but not really- to actually play the final chapter you need to make sure none of your partners die. Wish I'd have known this before letting them all die.)

It's no Somnium Files, and it's absolutely not worth the full asking price, but I've put the sequel on the wishlist for when that goes down in price. Which says something.

I seem to be stuck somewhere in Virtues Last Reward. I haven’t played in a while so that’s probably not helping! I can’t progress any further so I must have missed or forgotten something but I’m sure I can’t complete any further fragments.

I’ll try to explain where I am.

Spoiler

The most recent thing to have opened up is the red boxes where each team need to enter a password. I have one I think form the mother’s momentos - Phi’s brooch? Then there’s another one of that section. One is a code in the computer server room? Now I don’t know if I’m supposed to know them and I’ve just forgotten or there’s another oath I can go down! Does anyone have a clue?!

Argh I just tried a vague search to remember the name of the boxes I’m trying to open as I’m not near the PlayStation and Google’s search suggestions just had a huge spoiler. FFS!

Quite often the wall people hit, including me, is that you need to go through every vote choice at the start of the game, and also in the shower section have every outcome between the teams which means playing through it multiple times. You can see on the flowchart there are some little icons which show the shower choice iirc. Doing all this stuff should unlock new fragments. Googling is very dangerous for the Zero Escape games!

Ahhhh maybe I missed a shower option. But I think me doing all of those was what opened up the boxes. Unless opening up the boxes was every vote choice because I’m sure I did that too! Hmmm! I can’t play til tonight but I’ll double check those things.

I've finally got around to starting Zero Time Dilemma and am about ten hours in.

A few of the puzzles have been fantastic so far and the story is all nicely confusing, but it undoubtedly feels like a significant step backward in presentation. May be some rose-tinted memories of Virtue's, but I remember it being pretty stylish. The cutscenes in Zero are proper clunky.

I doubt it will impair my enjoyment that much, but it is a bit of shame that it all feels so cheap.

Right, that settles it, I'm replaying ZTD. Laine, I remember being 'stuck' in one part, except I wasn't stuck, the game was simply doing the worst thing a game could do and it was amazing and brilliant. I'm not sure what more I could post without spoiling it, but please post back here if you're unsure how to prgress again!

ZTD is a really mixed bag. Compared to the other games its really jarring but as a kind of standalone its pretty good on its own merit. The story and characters and structure are nothing compared to the first two games but it really comes together towards the end. If only they'd had the budget and it hadn't been rescued from the bowels of death it could have been really special. As it stands its still entertaining just in a different way to the first two games. The cutscenes are really lowfi but along with the music they do manage to capture a very cinematic atmosphere the first two games never had.

Really curious whether the next Ukioshi game will be any good, I finished watching a playthrough of VLR recently and I'm just dying for a really complex story like that again - AI Somnium Files was good but I love all the twists and turns and death game stuff. Pleeease let it be good!

What was the play through like? I’m not sure whether to jump into ZTD, or run through VLR again first. The problem is, that game alters your view in such a way it’s impossible to get that first feeling back without watching it vicariously.

Had an amazing bit in Zero Time Dilemma tonight. I'll not explain it completely but will put a bit of a clue in a spoiler.

Spoiler

Q's button.

Really enjoyed the horror of the situation and making the decision. I love shit like that ^_^
