Alita: Battle Angel

What's this like in comparison to the Anime? I watched it as a teenager and thought it was amazing, watched maybe 5 or 10 times around that sort of time, but have never gone back as it was a home taped VHS from a friend and the quality was terrible back then, hate to think what it would be like now.

Mostly I'm wondering if this follows the main story arc of that or if it's just taking parts of it?

Thanks :)

I watched it as a teenager and i watched it again a couple years back. It's actually very short (the anime) and doesn't really waste any time progressing the story.  Gonna give it another watch soon though.

Basically the new film is simular-ish and follows most of the same story, it's just expanded upon. Also a large part of the film is based on the manga's later comics, which i guess was added for more thrills (dont want to go into spoiler territory).  I liked those sections personally, although i think some people where confused as to why they were included.

Alita as a character was great though. Hugo is a bit disappointing but didn't bother me.

Thank you, now I am even more looking forward to watching this :)

Hugo always was shit, all about Alita and ido, although what happened in the Anime to the Female Doctor who'd made a deal with someone was pretty dark, as it's a 12A I'm thinking that has been modified for this release.

Oh, and have I always said this wrong, I thought it was Battle Angel : Alita, Hollywood retcon or me? :p

OK you got me there, Speed Racer is criminally underrated.

Given the constant praise on this place, that seems a questionable assertion. I've seen it, and think it's better than what the general consensus score for it is, but also at the same time probably not what the vocal RLLMUK score for it is. Nice garish visuals, but meh story and characters.

But it has that one time when Racer X jumps his car up in the air, punched a viking in the face and then landed with the world's greatest shit-eating grin

Cameron said in an interview the reason they did that renaming was to allow them to name the sequels (assuming it makes enough money for them to do the rest of the story)

I don’t get it. How does swapping around the words in the title allow them to name any sequels easier?

To quote him, though he's probably just spitballing these titles:

But you can't (in reference to the interviewer apologising for calling it Battle Angel: Alita)

It's Alita colon Battle Angel because the next one will be Alita: Fallen Angel and Alita, you know, Avenging Angel and Alita whatever, that's assuming we make some money, otherwise it'll be Alita, what was Alita?

Here's the original BBC video so you can see how he says it for yourself:

Its very similar, including stuff from the OVA that wasn't in the manga.

Something Angel is how the volumes of the manga are named so I assume that's where he's got that from.

In general Battle Angel news, I bought one of the deluxe volumes the other day and they're gorgeous. The Mars Chronicle tankobons are also really high quality.

I’ve bought and read the first two digitally, but I’m very tempted to hold off reading the rest until I get my bonus next month and treat myself to the box set of the deluxe volumes from Amazon for £100.

It's cheaper to just buy the 5 volumes separately from Books Etc, for 15 pound each as the other stories in the 6th book are not really very good.

Watched this tonight after having been a long fan of the manga and anime.

Thought it was fantastic, and appeared to have been made by someone who actually cares about the source material unlike, sadly, GitS. “Fuck your mercy” - aww yeah. The addition of content from later comics was welcome.

Tbh I could rewatch this a dozen times just for the detail in the sets and extra characters. I’m not sure what the obsession with leaving Iron City is- it looks like a rich, vibrant place with stalls selling trinkets on pipes hundreds of feet in the air, where you can buy a bar of chocolate the size of a cinder block. Sure there’s crime but there’s also one-wheeled motorcycles.

Edit: it is of course a stupid fucking movie, but it is after all a story about a 300-year-old Martian teenager with a robotic body playing Roller Derby Rugby. It’s awesome, but I can understand why people don’t get it.

I know what you mean - it's like that prison in The Dark Knight Rises which isn't actually in darkness at all, the healthcare is remarkable (and free), and everyone is actually very helpful and encouraging

Yes, there’s even a doctor who lets you pay him with a bag of fruit and a promise. You’re not even banned from leaving the city, you can just go wander through the wilderness and it doesn’t appear to be a toxic wasteland.

You can also get up on rooftops whenever you want for a romantic moment without anyone coming to hassle you.

And they have fuck off enormous bars of chocolate which seem to be immune to the scorching heat.

It's Utopia, I tells ya

It's maybe another reason why this movie works - the obvious thing to do would be have evil lurk around every corner, but that would have meant anything as simple as a child's street sports game would have been somewhat hard to swallow

It's that old chestnut of if you enjoyed it, none of this matters - it's only when you really don't enjoy something and you try to articulate why it ends up being picking up all the little bits and then you're being accused of nit picking but it isn't, it's just that you come out of the experience at the time and start focusing on it, rather than what something like this - it's weeks since I saw it and I honestly hadn't thought about that stuff since then cos I had fun

I went in expecting the worst.

It's not the greatest movie: the script is some serious horse-shit, and some of the CGI is dodgy as fuck - basically any of the baddies with a robot body that isn't Zapan.

But... yeah. It just about works, and I had a good time with it.

Rosa Salazar was amazing, and I really hope we see more of her bad-ass Alita.

This was just a fun ride!! Sure, it's not a great movie in the way that someone like Kermode or that Kerraig fella judges them, but I don't care cos I loved it.

Yeah, absolutely nothing wrong with just having a good old time at the pictures. Alita is perfectly fine, I was just a bit gutted because I'm such a Cameronbro. I want at least one more classic out of him before he keels.

Went to see this last night with my gf, I thoroughly enjoyed it, I’ve only watched the anime before, so the mars connection and roller derby were all new to me, and the other half also enjoyed it, she said she was  engrossed throughout and if I hadn’t mentioned going, she’d have never watched it as she had no knowledge of the anime of manga.

it was literally 12 hours ago that we were watching it, but I’d happily watch it again right away, it’s been several years since I last watched Avatar, and I couldn’t careless if I never saw it or a sequel again .

if you’ve not seen this, go to the cinema and support it, it’s the only good anime adaptation I’ve ever seen!!
