Well this is a tedious and pointless conversation.

Anyway back to the film. I've thought from the get go it looked a bit rubbish, and the vast mahority of reviews so far seems to suggest so too. I'm predicting this to bomb hard. Up there with Valarian and Cloud Atlas.

2 of my favourite movies of the last decade

Yeah but we know that sandman has no taste, he's shown that multiple times :P

I'm gonna agree with @linkster here, if you're going to share a video I appreciate it when the poster explains the context and why they are sharing it. Even if it's just, "I agree with this"

It literally says in the thumbnail it's a review of the film. It's pretty obvious what it is.

There's stuff in that trailer that I feel like I've seen a million times over, like the bit where she slides on her knees underneath a baddie to strike a killer blow, or that bit where she's spinning and twisting her body in slow motion to dodge the tentacles, or that bit where... *stifles huge yawn*

Exactly, it looks so uninspiring. Even the whole "who I am" side of it. The CGI in the trailer looked pretty naff too, or rather overblown.

The manga the film is based on is amazing, it's also really violent and gory so I guess a lot of that has been toned down to receive the 12A rating.

I will still give it a watch, manga has never really translated that well to the big screen so I wasn't expecting this to be anything more than a decent way to spend a couple of hours in the cinema.

Exactly how I felt about Captain Marvel when the trailers were shown back to back. Least this doesn't have the utterly shit attempts at banter.

I really liked the anime, which had these odd, tripartite themes of sweet/childlike sentiment, desperate sadness and entropy, and a very, very small girl getting covered in blood because she's actually an unstoppable murder bot who eviserates fools.

Cloud Atlas was great! Valerian, apart from the first scene and a few scattered moments, was not.

Here's the person with the most positive opinion on the Battle Angel movie I've seen so far. If some context is needed: he's an occasional Den of Geek reviewer and co-host of one of my favourite podcasts, the comic book movie podcast Cinematic Universe (and he really liked Valerian):

That last comment is not exactly a high bar to clear.

Btw when I said it'll go the way of Cloud Atlas and Valarian I meant in the way they bombed at the box office, not the films quality. I've literally seen zero publicity for this too, at least those two had that.

I loved the original anime of this. I remember stumbling upon it when it was shown on some random hour of the morning on C4 years ago and I was too young to be up. Bloody awesome little film.  No one I know remembers the original and I won't be able to nerd it up with anyone if it is as good as the original....  It's like Elysium all over again as that was basically a rip off of BA: Alita and I no one I knew cared :quote:

As much as I would love for this to be great it just looks like style over substance.

I don't think I'm going to pay to see this, I'm tempted but it looks a bit teenagey and I feel like the violence is actually quite important to the tone and feel of the setting.

Hopefully it will do well enough to get some interest and they'll make a proper anime series.

Yeah that sounds like I’d expect to be honest.

GIST was just hateful, the pathetic implication from the trailer there was going to be ScarJo in a lesbian relationship, when that was literally the extent of that ‘story’, plus all the nonsense about how she was chosen to be major even when her previous self had no skills to merit the job. Plus the acting was appalling.

but nobody could be going into this doubting Alita has the whole normal teen thing going on and there’s some weird Pinnochio relationship with Christoph Waltz, it’s all there, I just think it looks great

i also remember Avatar was getting laughed out of town before release and I loved it, tho I confess I’ve not bothered watching it again since

You've just described most anime there though. Moe, melodrama, and teenage edgelordism

Hmm...

he said the movie was a mess:

Yes that thumbnail is obnoxious, and yes this doesn't help my defence. But at the end of the day its an opinion. I go and watch it if I'm interested, there's been many films which are deemed awful but I still love anyway. Kung Pow for example is awful but I love every moment of it.

I’ve watched the film now and so felt like giving the review a go. I’m glad I waited as there’s way more footage in here than I’d seen in trailers. No he’s not screechy or whiny :P but I can’t say I liked his style either, he just kind of says stuff in a random order in that ‘not wanting to offend anyone go up at the end of each sentence’ way. I thought he was wrong about the romance, pretty much the best scene (and the worst) in the movie came about cos of that

christ, Big Jim has been talking about making this for decades, surely his vision wasn't this generic??

I imagine it probably was, but if he'd directed it his magic powers would have made it a huge hit.

At the end of the day movie reviews are just opinions and not FACTS which people sometimes forget.
