Some of the mocap looks a bit floaty but overall I think this looks fantastic, the facial performance feels really on point. Looking forward to it!

Finally watched this. Story was pretty flimsy, but whatever, I was here for the visuals.

I liked the striking comic book style, but the action sequences suffered from trying to squeeze too much business into each shot. This can happen a lot in films, the director is trying to tell as much story as possible but also has limits to overall film length and shot count costs.

So the anim/mocap ends up hitting too many beats per shot and you get something that looks overly busy with a lessened sense of weight to the physicality.

Still very pretty at times.

At this point it seems to be up to the men in suits. It was designed for one or more sequels and it has ended up getting more than double its budget at the box office. It's just the critical reception putting a bit of a downer on it. There doesn't seem to be any indication, even just rumours, either way yet.

Plenty of stuff seems to get swiftly cancelled with that sort of return on a budget that big (like the last attempt at a Terminator franchise; $40m more at the box office than Alita off a $10m smaller budget - perhaps they’re more interested in return per dollar spent than the raw total?), so I guess we’re in “no news is good news” territory at the minute.

Really enjoyed this - was quite surprised really as I'd avoided as the trailers didn't really do anything for me.  Hope they make the sequel(s).

I don't think it will happen it was just ok at the box office & that does not bode well for a sequel.

Doesn't bode well, but not impossible, considering what else eventually got a (bad) sequel:

Pacific Rim - $411m worldwide, 75% outside the US. (Budget $190m)

Alita - $405m worldwide, 79% outside the US. (Budget $170m)

But that similar amount is before adjusting for inflation - and Box Office Mojo have recently redesigned and paywalled inflation-adjusted figures behind an IMDbPro subscription.

Whenever I see this thread bumped, i kinda hope it's with news of a sequel.

There is potential for a sequel - it did okay at the cinema and didn't do badly on blue ray/dvd. Would be nice to know worldwide numbers for those as I hear it did very well in the UK at least.

Quote

Domestic Box Office$85,710,210

International Box Office$317,261,058

Worldwide Box Office$402,971,268

Home Market Performance

Est. Domestic DVD Sales$4,050,134

Est. Domestic Blu-ray Sales$16,132,234

Total Est. Domestic Video Sales $20,182,368

I really hope it does get greenlighted soon because let's face it, if they leave it too long it won't get made.

The annoying thing as well as it sets it'self up so much for a sequel and the fact that this movie pretty much covers what was mostly in the OVA (so anyone who watched that pretty much know the plot of the movie) where as anything else after that it new for me as i never read the comics.

Read the manga, apart from Naoki Urasawa's work, its probably the best manga I have ever read.

I'm not reading too much into this, despite the headline confirming a sequel will be made.

However, apparently the "follow up" (presumably , sequel) is going to the streaming service "tubi"

Yeah, i've never heard of it either.

I can't see a streaming service financing a movie which is likely to need a budget of 100+ million to make, but we shall see.

It’s nothing to do with Alita. It’s a film called Red 11. It’s a follow-up in the sense that it’s the next movie he made. Nothing more. It’s a bit badly written and deceptive.

Ah thanks for clearing that up. I knew he was pimping his new film Red 11 but they actually made it sounds that a follow up to Alita would also be released.

Explains why i couldn't find anything else about Alita 2..

It's very carefully worded so that anyone reading the headline and only the first paragraph will think it's referring to Alita 2 without saying anything factually incorrect. That also takes some skill.
