Aah, that quote brings back memories.

Memories of Kilik and his staff, of paying a penny a minute on BT dial up internet and still managing to rack up a £250 monthly phone bill playing too much Phantasy Star Online (RIP Logaan)...of having a teeny little fan aimed at the Dreamcast to stop it overheating...the motorbike sections of Headhunter, Ryu wandering around lovely cities. Memories of a simpler time.

The legend will never die.

Aw yeah. +1

I racked up some big bills with Quake 3 Arena on the DC. Was going pro with a DC keyboard and mouse, set-up on top of the ironing board while I sat at the end of my bed.

Denied my parents the use of the phone AND the iron.

If there was ever a guest character that at least seems like they can fit into the SC universe though, Geralt is probably it. It's like Geralt had his three game contract come to an end and his agent figured he should do another fantasy epic with heaving bosoms.

Actually Link wasn't too bad.

I loved Namco fighters in the PS1/DC era but just can't get on with them nowadays for some reason. Tekken 3 was incredible but 4 left me cold and I've never managed to get back into it since. Thought Soul Calibur on DC was one of the best games on the system, played II for a while but again just completely lost interest. I think it's Namco's art direction in both series that does me in. I haven't really got into a 3D fighter since Virtua Fighter 5 which I really loved though..and that was a good decade ago :(

Edit: I did play DoA5 a lot when it first came out because Akira was in it but again it didn't have that long term lasting appeal. I think a lot of it is down to music and stages too. Fighters from the 32Bit era always had amazing stages and themes. Fighters Megamix was just stage after stage of top tunes and arenas. Tekken 3 was awesome in this regard too. Now I watch videos of Tekken 7 and it's so bland in comparison. What is this?

This is much more interesting and 20 years older:

And this still sound amazing

Mortal Kombat X and Street Fighter V have really good stages (especially the DLC stages in V) and SFV has tons of great music. It certainly keeps me coming back.

Anyway sorry for going OT. I really do hope SC6 is good.

Tekken 7's very good, but the stages as a whole are kinda bland.

I was watching footage of Tekken 4 the other day, and I don't care if it affects gameplay in weird ways, the floor undulation definitely makes the stages look more interesting on a visual level. Doa 2 Ultimate's stages in particular were some of the best in the business, and VF3 - which people also complained about - had some great ones too.

Then you look at stuff like the more recent Street Fighter stages and it's hard to guess where all that imagination from a decade or two ago went. (Also, just noticed you said SFV had good stages - that's a hard disagreement from me, especially stuff like the New Zealand stage with its mutant sheep)

It looks stylistically more like the first two games. Give me Taki and Voldo.

I was always terrible with Taki, but I bothered to learn her moves and got to flip around a lot before my inevitable death.

Taki was great. So fast. I struggled with Voldo and the chap with the axe (way too slow).

Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection's my favourite fighting game, but I agree with you about the music and stages thereafter.

Okay, so there's hardly anything happening in their foregrounds, but Lei's Hong Kong Rooftop has that Streets of Rage vibe that went out of fashion soon after. Tekken 5 largely returned to that style after the relative failure of Tekken 4, but it's mostly been generic rubbish since.

I love that rear ocean view in the third round.

The stock stages are hit and miss, but more good than bad imo, however the DLC stages have been really good, even if they are mostly reimagings of classic stages.

Yeah, the DLC stages are better even though they're reruns - Rashid's jet's a bit weird, but impressive, and Akuma's temple's okay as well. Weird though, Cammy's stage almost looks a watercolour rendition in screenshots and I can't afford the stage to check it out by myself.

I'll take it.

If you play the SF2 path in Arcade Mode, select her an an opponent and it'll be on her stage. All the DLC stages are in Arcade Mode which is pretty cool.

It's a shame they are overpriced otherwise. Should be no more than 50K if 100K is a character, but that's a discussion for the SFV thread :)

Just me who thinks this game looks good then?

EVO top 8 was a fun watch:

Apologies for forcing Aris' face on you there. To be fair he does sometimes seem a tad less douchey these days.

The waaaaay over the top depth of field on the stages does bother me a bit though. I hope they tone that down.

Aris runs a pretty funny twitch stream but I'd be lying if I said the cross assault sexual harassment incident from a few years back doesn't sour the amusement I get from his content.

In SC6 news they have gone ahead and announced DLC before the game is even out.

I can forgive announcing DLC pre-release if it's obvious the character won't be finished in time (Mewtwo was announced for Smash Bros Wii U a month before release, they only had a character model to show) but this character is ready to go on day 1 so they are forcing you to either pre-order to buy the season pass to get her.
