Nostalgic play-throughs

So, XMas is usually when you get a chunk of spare time and a chance to play games, uninterrupted.

This year there's a bunch of great, new stuff to play, but I usually think about replaying some old classic through - so, do you do the same, and if so, what's on your must replay list?

I'll probably try to get a run-through of Ico/SotC and maybe an anniversary run through The Last Guardian. Although I'm also considering a Mass Effect trilogy replay - Andromeda didn't appeal to me.

That'll probably soak up all my gaming time. You?

I'm near the end of Max Payne 3, a game I last played over 5 years ago.

It's brilliant - there are so many neat touches in the game I'm amazed haven't been ripped off yet, especially the elegant solution to dual wielding / double handed weapons (you'll hold a sidearm with one hand and carry say a shotgun in the other) also as it's been so long the cut scenes aren't a problem this time, I'm really enjoying McCafferty's performance. Surprised he has not turned up in more games TBH.

Would love a Max Payne collection on PS4, the PS3 version is not ideal.

Arkham Origins. Sure, it was slightly clunkier than the Rocksteady games, but I think the hate the game got was kinda unfair and I actually prefer it to City. Plus this is set around Christmas, and the snow on PC with the PhysX is amazing. A great xmas game.

Also, Bully has a great Christmas bit, full of icy streets, snow and hobo Santa.

Origins was the only one I didn't play and complete, so I'll need to see if I can pick it up on the cheap somewhere.

I played through Arkham Origins for the first time recently after it got added to Xbox One BC, and it’s not bad – unadventurous and ultimately unsatisfying, but there’s enough of the Rocksteady games in there to keep you playing. The main problems:

- They’ve fucked with the combat somehow, so that combos are much harder to keep going (through no fault of your own), and so that you’re often vulnerable while you’re carrying out an attack animation. It’s weird, in that the combat is more challenging, right up until you unlock a certain piece of equipment, at which point it becomes trivially easy.

-The story is all over the place, and the end is extremely abrupt

-They waste the year two setting, as the young, inexperienced Batman is absolutely identical to the older, more cynical Batman, has all the same equipment, and all the same moves. It’d be great if you started off in a home-made costume taking on muggers one on one, and gradually unlocked your equipment as you went through the game, but from the first minute of the game Batman turns up in his VTOL space jet.

-the developers seem to want to copy Rocksteady without really thinking about why they’re doing it, so you get all the reality-warping trip-out sequences from the earlier games, but it feels like they’ve been chucked in there just because they were in the previous Arkhams, rather than because they serve any purpose within this one.

For all that, I kept picking at it for a few weeks. It’s no Arkham Knight, but there are some nice touches, and even the weird, off-kilter fighting bits are brutal fun.

I'm surprised there's been no mention of Animal Crossing...

When we had the C64 my brother and I had a tradition to play this (admittedly pretty average) Father Christmas themed collect 'em up by Alternative Software - it only takes about ten minutes to finish and I'm often tempted to stream it around this time of year.

The modern Persona games always have some fun sequences when the in-game calendar hits the 25th, but I don't think I have a save prepared...

To be honest, I wasn't really thinking of purely XMas/winter-themed games to play, although I know it's a common thing to do.

I'm thinking 'I have a week off, with time for lots of gaming, what would I like to re-play' - because in the evenings after work, I prefer to play new stuff. This year, the old games will have to fight for time with Xenoblade and PSVR, so it'll be tough.

I might do a second run-through of Dishonored 2; I haven't played through as Emily yet, and have done the entire series including DLC once this year.

Having just looked up the Ridge Racer Type 4 intro for another thread, I might even dig out the ol' PS1 and have a go at that. Or, or, the Wipeout remakes I just got for PS4! Man, so much choice.

I played Knight for the first time this year after re-reading the thread in here; apart from the interminable bloody drone attacks, a great little game. I had also thought of replaying Arkham Asylum and Arkham City again, as a result (although I got too invested in City; gave up on something like 98% complete).

I’d love to run through Shadow of the colossus again but I’ll have to wait a few months.

I sold last guardian a couple of weeks ago but want to go through that again so when it’s on sale....

I still crave Skyrim but I just can go back because I know it’ll be a mistake.

I always have grand plans to replay old stuff (Valkyria Chronicles springs to mind) but honestly, I'll be just trying to catch up a bit - I'm so behind this gen. Just finished Uncharted 4, playing Mafia 3 at the moment and hopefully I'll polish that off in time to start Witcher 3 over Christmas.

Probably does work in my favour financially, as I doubt I'll be seriously considering a PS5 until about 5 years after release at this rate.

Final Fantasy VII.

It took me almost 20 years to finish it the first time round and I bloody loved it. I played it through at Christmas time when it was rereleased on PS4 and I think another trip through is in order.

I'm feeling a replay of FFVII too, especially with the enhancements made to the PS4 release.

Realistically, though, I'll probably still be playing Mario Odyssey. Like the rest of us, I don't seem to have the time to play games for the first time, let alone a second.
