out of genuine interest what sort of numbers listen to your pod?

Not loads. Maybe 120ish a week depending on our weekly feature or if we have a guest on. Podcasting is over saturated now isnt it so its hard to get huge numbers unless you're either famous, been doing it a long time (before the boom) or have something unique. We're not unique really, we talk and review nerd/pop culture stuff and do a weekly feature. We just really enjoy doing it so numbers aren't really the be all and end all (although it would be nice to get more). Plus as a team we do some other spin off podcasts too like a D&D one, a 1 to 1 interview podcast and soon one of our team is doing a pod celebrating woman in media/history with some of her friends. Maybe across everything we do it's like 650-700 a month, plus the views of our reviews on YouTube. Somehow I managed to get like 23k views for RRR which was nuts.

Got a website https://modernescapism.co.uk/ which shows everything we do (although it looks way better in desktop mode)

Anyway that's the long winded answer haha.

Is the Tolkien estate holding back for a bigger budget go around with the Silmarillion material? Utterly crazy.

I don't think Christopher Tolkien was interested in selling the rights at all, and I imagine the estate aren't exactly thrilled at the prospect even now he's out of the picture. I got the impression Christopher would have revoked all rights to LOTR and the Hobbit as well if he could.

Am I right in thinking that his father JRR wrote the hobbit whilst in the trenches of the western front and sent them to his kids.

In which case Christopher wanting to keep the story his and his families, sort of makes sence.

But in this day and age I would have thought making bank with such a rich IP would be a easy choice.

Who knows? Bezos must have a big enough wallet to pay whatever they wanted for the whole thing. And yet they only reluctantly gave the index away.

Who even said that anyone wanted a faithful adaption? The books are great but they don't half drag on a bit (LOTR especially). I can't see modern audiences these days being that interested in five hours of Elven High Council type stuff and lineage of the men of Gondor or whatever. But a mystery story about a man who crashes to Earth in a flaming comet, and a kick-ass elf babe with mad ninja skillz and a volcano erupting everywhere and killing loads of people sounds great to me. I love Tolkien's writing btw but I'm nearly 45 and a massive geek. I don't want this to be something that only people like me are going to like. I want my 10-year-old nephew and his friends who have grown up on Fortnite and TikTok to love it.

exactly - there's some hardcore Tolkien aren't happy until there are 2 hour long episodes of elves singing songs in elvish with no translation - with hobbits looking on in awe.

My son LOVED Rings of Power - got up with me at 6am to watch the finale... it's big high fantasy that, unlike Game of Thrones or the Witcher, I can happily watch with him.  This is what makes is great.

He got a bit bored of Andor - that's more aimed at oldies like me.

I suspect people getting a little precious over what was done with this series will be in for a shock when The Embracer Group movies and games start rolling out annually and forever.

Iirc the Silmarillion enters public domain in 2028, so wait 5 years and everyone complaining can put their money where their mouth is.

Whether you are invested in the lore or not, this still isn't a very good show. You can pretend all you want that the criticisms of it are purely on its use of the source material but the problems are deeper: poor pacing, very variable writing, uninspired characters, rushed plotting.

Or maybe that is staying true to the source material 🤔.

Absolute lols. Literally the only poor pacing was the undeservedly long goodbye to Nori and her family.

Amen. I like the lore, AND I loved the show too. I was genuinely excited for it every week, totally enraptured while watching it, and am looking forward to watching the lot again in a few months.

I wander in here (I’m not lost) now and then and end up smh at all the really weird negativity. I wish everyone could have got from the show what I did. Guess it will be real quiet in here for S2, right?

Ditto.  Something that really got me was

Spoiler

Halbrand/Sauron's admittance that Morgoth's defeat felt like a release, but he couldn't go back to Valinor. I always took that as he'd been too corrupted by Morgoth himself he coudln't help himself and his own elf imprisonment continued. I'm glad the show took the same view.

No, it'll be full of dickheads posting about how bad they found it.

I introduced the LOTR & Hobbit films to my eldest when he was 6 and they really caught his imagination.  He's now 8 and watching RoP together has been an absolute joy.  For obvious reasons, GoT/HotD is not fantasy that he can consume, so the fact this has been made in the way it has is fantastic.  It's given us something to enjoy together in a similar fashion to recent Star Wars films & TV shows.  I often think people miss the point with some of their criticisms that shows like this are intended to be these cross-generational experiences, and I for one am happy we get more of them now than I feel like we used to.

Tonally it feels completely in keeping with the Jackson films, and what changes have been made to the lore have been made in good faith and for the story to better serve as a TV show.

The scary part is when my son pointed out that, if each series takes 2 years to make, he'll be 16 when we're watching the finale together 😬
