The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

Spoiler

I'm liking fantasy Venice. Probably just as expensive.

I did feel Galadriel was a bit on the nose with the sense of import when saying where they were. A bit like a trailer line or something. Took me out of the show a bit, I mean yeah I get how important Numenor is, but we knew that, and they know that, so you don't have to draw more attention to it because the visuals speak for themselves.

Well I thought this was great. Some scenes lingered a bit too long and could have been edited down (you know which one, say goodbye already), but looking back on the series:

Spoiler

Right at the beginning, Gil Galad said he wanted to send Galadriel away as in her wroth to find and kill Sauron for good she could end up bringing him back.... And she did! Sauron would have just floated to Numinor and either end up sulking in jail or working as a Smith. Assuming he wasn't eaten by that sea serpent and lost his physical body again. He probably wouldn't even have heard of the creation of Morder and creation of the orc kingdom. Also you can see snippets of his ability to manipulate people when he was advising Galadriel from prison.

Equally if you think this was defeated Sauron, who had largely given up on world domination at this point, all her speeches calling him the true king of the Southlands was in retrospect exactly the wrong thing to say to a megalomaniac.  As was reaquainting him with the joys of killing enemies in battle.

Was wandering about as a human?

What was he doing on the boat? Why did he want to become a Smith?

Was he just gonna go round from kingdom to giving rings to Kings?

Spoiler

He said he'd given up. After being killed/ dissincorporated by the orc king it looks like he went on a massive sulk for several centuries

A small touch, but I loved Celebrimbor’s Bilbo/Sméagol-esque hunger when Galadriel was asking him about what/why he was making the crowns/rings. Perfectly played.

Yeah I liked that as well, the signs were there but it wasn’t over egged, great stuff :)

Was the Orc King killing/disemboding him mentioned in the show or is that book lore?

Spoiler

The orc king told Galadriel that he killed Sauron. She didn't believe him but given how keen Halbrand was to get revenge I think he did.

Sauron is like Gandalf, his body can die but he can materialise a new one in time

Ah got ya- I got confused and thought you were talking about the orc King from the hobbit (though he may have been the Goblin king).

I’ve said it before but I really like what they’ve done with Adar and the Uruk.

Spoiler

Bronwyn and the humans all think Halbrand is their king. Suspect Sauron is going to lead an army of humans against Adar’s Uruks to reclaim the south lands as rightful King and enslave them all when he wins
