Who is the blond haired young evil-looking dude we keep seeing from time to time? I have to admit I haven't paid 100percent attention when watching it all the time so although I've noticed him I haven't really kept track of what he is up to and how he relates to the story.

We've only seen him twice. No indication in the show who he might be. My thoughts are (lore spoilers):

Spoiler

Could be one of the blue wizards. This isn't my theory, but I saw someone flaoting it.

Short version - blue qizards were sent to Middle erath mid 2nd age (when the show is set) and all we know is they went east. The purpose of th ewizards (including gandalf, saruman and Radagast) was to work against Sauron. But only Gandlaf really did that explicitly. Saruman obviously fell into his own desires and Radagast got distracted by all the pretty nature.

Tolkien did note in some of his letters that the blue wizards went east, but he didn't know what they did. It could be they set up schools of magic out there, fell to Sauron, fell into their own goals a la Saruman, or wactually succeeded and foiled Sauron's plans out there, stopping disasters we'll never know about.

But, they could be around the area of the show at this time. Meteorman could be one. The blond dude could be another wh'os alredy fallen. I don't think that's the case though. Personally, i have no idea who he is.

The blonde dude is actually a girl… and… I think they are made out to be deliberately androgynous.

Spoiler

I think Sauron is physically dead and they have the means to bring him back, with her as some sort of vessel. The fire magic was proper wizard level shit.

Hmm well Tolkien makes a big deal about Sauron being "fair" around this time, so that would fit with the blond androgyne I guess ... although they do look pretty evil from what I remember. Then again maybe that's just a red herring.

What is s/he doing the two times we see them? Apart from looking evil I can't even remember.

Eminem and D2 seem to be hunting for the stranger. They were gathering around his crater originally and then they were investigating the trees he'd brought back to life.

Is Sauron dead at this point due to being killed by the Valar in the War of Wrath at the end of the first age? Or was only Morgoth killed, and Sauron just ran away and hid?

Spoiler

He's not dead. Morgoth was 'vanquished' to the void at the end of the first age and Sauron avoided capture. He actually handed himself in and was ordered to go to Valinor for judgement, but went "Yeah, nah" and stayed in Middle earth for shenanigans.

At the stage of this show he's very much alive, corporeal, and pretty and charming.

I think the 'Who is Sauron' was inevitable for anyone with even slight knowledge of the lore - I can't see them ever having Celebrimbor introduce his new best pal 'Annatar' in the telly - so it was always going to be a big mystery... I think they'd done it really well.  He's this massive lurking shadow in the background that you know is up to no good and is going to succeed... but you don't know where he is yet.

The fact that they haven't brought up "Who is Sauron" makes me think we're just means to assume it's blondie, and that it will be blondie. This show, enjoyable as it is, doesn't seem the type of show to credit us with enough intelligence to leave us to ask the question ourselves. It isn't exactly Better Call Saul in terms of subtlety. The writers probably didn't even think that anyone might assume it was anyone other than blondie.

OR IS IT ? Etc.

I've missed the last episode, so a little out of it but what's this about Celeborn being dead?

He's with Gladys in Lothlorian in the Lord of the Rings books isn't he?

She said she hadn't seen him, not that he was dead.

Ah, fair enough. Although he was a bit of a non-entity in the book and films, so no great loss either way!

I always liked that, that Tolkien was like,  'there's this elf guy, nothing special about him except he's married to Galadriel'.

Well aside from being a Prince of Doriath, leading an army against Sauron, being the Lord of Lothlorien and recognised as one of the wisest elves left in Middle Earth by the Third Age, aye.

The antipathy Celeborn has with Gimli in Lord of the Rings is because Tolkien had a bit of backstory to draw upon.

I am interested to see which option they go for to resolve their retcon

Spoiler

Seems to be only two choices, derivative of greater characters - the Gandalf "I've have been sent back" option, or the Harold Bishop option.

Yeah, but he's a referred to character, not one we get to know. He's distant, like Ciardan the shipwright.

Sauron but then he's Gandalf? Bit of a blunder with that case of mistaken identity from the trio.

Spoiler

I don’t think Cultists getting their messiah wrong is unusual!!
