The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

Spoilers for where this is all going, which won't be spoilers for anyone whose read the source material:

Spoiler

Before this started I read that they were planning on showing an accelerated version of the 2nd age - so is that all within this season? In other words are we expecting this season to take us up to the fall of Numenor ? Or the Last Alliance? Seems unlikely they can fit that all into the next five episodes! (Assuming there are going to be 10).

Or is this already planned out as a five-season epic?

About mithril…

Does mithril containing the light of a Silmaril have any basis in Tolkien lore?  I noted that they mention a Silmaril but not what that actually is assume because they don’t have the rights.

Spoiler

It doesn't. The location of the three silmarils are accounted for.... ish. One is a star in the sky, the other two were thrown into the ocean and another into a fiery chasm. Neither fot eh second two were confirmed as destroyed, though, and both happened in the end fot he first age. Gievn the show takes place midway through the second age.

I took the tale to be just that -  a tale. As Elrond said, "It is said". The main reason is the timing. There's no time between the losing of the two silmarils and the show to have a silmaril found and fought over, also, there's no record of any balrogs in the 2nd age. They were all either killed in the final battle of the first or went into hiding. However, the balrogs would loom large in elven folklore. Just see Legolas' reaction in Moria when Gandalg says the word - even he - an elf born long after the first age - kne what one was. Having something that is almost an ultimate nightmare for an elf to be involved in a creation myth of an object very important to their race makes sense.

And that is / could be what Mithril is. Tolken never goes into what mithril exactly is, not where it comes from. Saying it's just an ore, but one with extra ordinary properties.  How extraordinary? Well, Sauron himself is explicitly noted to "covet" it, and sought to gather as much as the ore as he could to himself. That suggests it has some kind of quality not made explicit, but implied. Elves are linked directly to nature and magic. Their fading at the end of the third age with the destruction of the Ring and it releasing its magic shows that. If Mithril has some kind of magical property, it could very well provide the elves with an anchor for their lifeforce , and would fit in with the world at large, and would warrant a creation myth.

Spoiler

I read four seasons, but it could be five. Ad yes, they're accelerating the timeline a little. The coinciding of two Durins at once is the biggest example.

My money is on the reveal of Sauron will be the end of this season, with perhaps the fall of Numenor the end of the 2nd.  The last Alliance would have to be the final season because, well, that's the end of the second age,

Me and the boy are really enjoying this - there's a slow boil to it, but we know it's all going to end up absolutely EPIC with mahoosive battles and lots of people dying, lots of characters becoming evil Nazgul and everything going to shit.

I'm genuinely intrigued by The Stranger now... my son was (and still is) convinced he's Gandalf, but I'm not so sure now...

My pal reckons Halbrand will turn out to be the Witch King of Angmar, which is maybe more likely than Sauron.

It's

Spoiler

a multiple season arc telling the entirety of the Second Age as they have the rights to it. They've condensed the timeline significantly - the Second Age takes place over thousands of years, this is basically shoving the entirety of the big events into a single generation of men. Which somewhat changes the nature of things - Numenor falls largely because it over thousands of years of success and greatness slowly goes evil as it believes it's own hype and turns on the gods, eventually being led by someone who wants to defy death. All whilst sweet nothings are whispered in their ears. Here we will have that happen at turbo speed.

Of course there's also not really enough content there to support multiple series of a TV show that people would actually watch, so this also is shoving in new stuff at a rate of knots to pad it out and create something that's viable as a big budget entertainment show.

it feels like Sauron is going to show up and be all like 'wanna be baddies' and half the world is gonna be all like 'yeah mate' and then a fortnight later they'll have a big fight and bust the ring.

I imagine they'll change things up quite a bit

LORE SPOILERS WHICH I DON'T THINK WE'LL SEE ON THE TELLY

Spoiler

as soon as an elf called 'Annatar' appears we'll all be Leo De Caprioing at our screens... so it's not going to be that.

as soon as a friendly person starts working with Celebrimbor on the makings of the rings... we'll be doing the same.

I wouldn't be surprised if Celebrimbor IS Sauron and the telly combines their characters together - or at least at some point, Celebrimbor is replaced by Sauron taking his form - where did he get the idea for his massive forge from?

If it's fitting in with the traditionalist view of the lore, Sauron will be all 'wannabe baddies' and the entire career who isn't pasty white will get their evil on.

I can imagine YouTube will be massively onboard when Lenny Henry and Arondyr switch allegiances to Mordor.

At this point I kind of want Sauron to be a black woman. So, the regent of Numenor would work nicely ;)

I suspect the programme is going to go much more into the motivations of the Orcs and that's why they've introduced the character of Adar - a bit of connection with the elves. Orcs were enslaved elves - they didn't want to become Orcs - they were driven underground and forced to work for Morgoth.  Adar seems to be that connection to when they were still elves, and his bit where he held the orcs arm out in the sunlight suggested that.  He wants the Orcs to be free to walk in the sun again... he was also not happy about being confused with Sauron.  There's also got to be reason for so many 'humans' joining the fight against the elves too.

Shit - what an awesome way to end an episode!!

Loved how it all built up - some really cool battle sequences.  LOTR really does nail the 'horses running over a hill' thing, doesn't it?

I really think this improves every episode - that was great stuff.

I'm very confused about the geography of Middle Earth in the second age.

Spoiler

Is the volcano that pops up supposed to be Mount Doom?

And if that is the case, how in god's name do the Numenorians ride so fast to aid the villagers?

I hope I'm wrong, because this disconnect over what I would have thought was a considerably vast distance concerns me :P

Yes, and where they are becomes you-know-where in the future.
