@Waggo I won’t quote your post but is your spoiler a guess or is it the entire plot for this show? I assume the latter considering it is so specific - any chance of a spoiler warning on posts like this? E.g. “spoiler will ruin entire plot strand for non-lotr lorehounds”.

wouldn’t have thought it a spoiler given that Galadriel realised

Apologies, I was unclear but I’m referring to to Waggo’s post on the previous page where they said:

I think the actress who plays Galadriel is absolutely nailing it, and the amount of superiority and arrogance she displays even in unfavourable situations is perfect for where I think they are taking her role.

The spoiler after that paragraph is the one I’m questioning.

Seeing people commenting they find Galadriel unlikeable, that she's got an attitude etc like it's something new. I always felt the Elves thought they were superior to all the other races and that they felt the other races very existence was owed to them (with a few exceptions)

Yeah I agree, theirs is such a weird take.

Firstly it's Galadriel. IT'S GALADRIEL.

Secondly, Galadriel is an elf. AN ELF.
Thirdly, she's an elf with a chip on her shoulder about the unjust death of a loved one. CHIP ON SHOULDER.

Fourthly, and this is the craziest bit of all. TV SHOW CHARACTERS HAVE ARCS AND DEVELOP AS TIME GOES ON. Methinks a lot of these chuds are too used to Marvel characters who have almost no character development over a decade and all tend to speak with the same quippy voice.

These same guys would bail on Breaking Bad in episode one because Walter was too much of a "cuck" probably.

Ok, thank you @Thor. Sorry for any doubt@Waggo.

I can't tell what is what when it comes to lore deep cuts and knowledgeable speculation   I will bow out of the thread now and enjoy the show as an ignorant casual

Yeah sorry for any confusion I have no inside knowledge whatsoever.

I read LOTR and The Hobbit as a kid 30 odd years ago, but none of the other stuff Tolkien wrote, and obviously I have seen the Peter Jackson films, but that is the total extent of my understanding of the lore behind the show.

So yeah pure speculation on my part.

My son complained the dialog was all lumpy and explaining the plot to you. Until I pointed out that to be honest, it's just like Tolkien wrote it.

It's fun and stupid and the lord of Dinglbong, son of Bringlypool, hair to the city of Clingglypoo, who wields the egg whisk of Asnagar the soul biter etc etc  Dialog is not what you come to middle earth for really

Finally got around to the third ep.  Still loving it. Still anoyed by the title reveal on the intro. Very 1990's US sitcom, but that's a minor gripe.

I'm loving Numenor. Looks like an awesome place to go holiday: (lore spoiler)

Spoiler

Kind've a shame with what's coming.

There are some snippets of dialogue which are just lazy, though. The meeting between Tar-Miriel and Galadrial that went south quicker than Gandalf looking for Saruman (I won't apologise) and Celebrimbor just whacking Elrond over the head with his inner desires are the two that stand out, but they're few and far between and don't ruin anything.

But the biggest excitement in this episode was all around Halbrand:

He’s Sauron isn’t he? Good-looking, silver tongued, suppressed violence, wants to get forging. Or do we think it’s a misdirect?

Halbrand is Sauron right???

(Lore spoiler)

Spoiler

He can't be. Sauron does go to Numenor, but as a captive after having created the rings and fought a whole war against Numenor in Middle Earth.

I think the Harfoots are ancestors of the Hobbits. One of them is called Brandyfoot, like Brandybuck in the trilogy.

They are. They arose in the east and moved west over the centuries.  During either the latter part of the 2nd age or the first part of the third they they would cross the Misty Mountains and settle in Arnor, and would eventually fight alongside humans and elves against the Witchking of Angmar, and would be gifted the land that would become The Shire for their aid. Some would stay on the east of the Misty Mountains and the around the Andiun River though,  where one group would eventually produce Smeagol, which would lead to shenanigans.

The one change from the lore to the show that's bother me, and one that for some reasons the chadbros seem entirely ok with, is that the Numenorians are supposed to be built like Space Marines. They're supposed to be remarkably bigger and stronger than the normal human, in addition to being really long lived.

I understand why this isn't in the show, so I'm not fussed that much, but I love how not one of the people whining about black elves and dwarves not respecting Tolkien or some bullshit have entirely missed this quite clear cut omission from the world. It's almost as if they don't know what they're talking about.

@Mikes are your spoilers from books?

In general Could people who know the lore spoiler it - it's fun for both readers and non readers chat about the differences. It's just good for people to know if it's speculative or lore before clicking.

It is, and you're right, apologies. I'll mark lore spoilers as such.

Gave up on this after 30mins or so but have a question, does this series have moments with just dialogue and no background music?

Although this can annoy me in other shows, it really doesn't bother me for things like this (the films were the same if memory serves right). Plus they're doing a bang up job with the music on this. Works really well I think.

The entire Creative Cloud suite has a splash page based on this new series. I’m guessing Amazon threw them a bunch of cash to feed us adverts through our work software now. I can’t really be arsed complaining, but shouldn’t some of that money go towards making the subscription cheaper? I don’t really want to be force fed ads.

Weirdly looking more Captain Marvel than Galadriel there, colour-wise.

InDesign is using Eleanor Brandyfoot. Only twigged today and I've been using it all week.

I'm really impressed so far. The visuals are utterly stunning in 4k. There hasn't been much action really but it'll build up to that I suspect. I've not read Tolkien since I was about 11 or 12 so I wouldn't even notice any discrepancies but it's building it's own identity away from Jackson's films and that's a good thing. It's dialogue heavy and the characters seem to have a lot more depth.
