I've really enjoyed both episodes, though I wanted to see more of Elrond and Durin, whether that be them doing more Mining Games, on the lift with Durin sulking or with his family where the wonderful Disa clearly wears the trousers, I did laugh at the "leave my head's alone!" bit

He is also the guy they picked to play the young Ned Stark in GOT, so I guess somebody at least thought he had the look of a young Sean Bean.

Yep, loved Ep2 also. It’s brilliant stuff.
 

It’s also not just the CGI-augmented scenery that’s amazing, the physical sets and the costumes and the props are all lovely too. I love Arondir’s ‘Green Man’ armour for example, and the snazzy wee hammer that had summat to do with the Silmarils, and especially the scaled-up blackberries for the Harfoots. I’ll be bloody delighted if it keeps this up.

 

Oh, and the music is brilliant, what madness am I reading?

Didn't hate the first episode, no foam hands on show or dodgy looking green screen.

 

I've never really been a fan of fantasy though, didn't like the films and it's only really GoT and the Witcher which got me interested.

 

The failings in the first ep to my tastes are more one that apply to the wider genre in that it just feels so childish, the same problem I have with the vast majority of the comic book or star wars stuff. 

 

Oh look it's some irish themed small people with whistle music living idyllic lives and eating berries before inevitably getting dragged into the story and providing heartwarming comic light relief and a tale that size doesn't matter if you're fighting for right. 

 

I'll give it another go and a chance to grow on me, it didn't irritate me like that awful thing with Rosamund Pike waving her arms round and the big bloke with rubber hands.

I'm not entirely certain what I think yet, but something I did like is how earnest and it was and that it took all the high fantasy seriously. I am so over Disney style winking at the audience constantly, I really don't need Elrond turning around and going 'Well that just happened' after some spectacle.

I've watched the first episode and not sure I could stop watching it if I tried. It's beautiful. Like, on a completely other level of immersive and perfect. 

 

Which makes the fact that episode one was a duffer harder to swallow. The scenes are too long and filled with unnecessary exposition. The direction was completely monotone for most of it; I'm not a huge fan of Tolkien 'doing a poetry' but the characters reciting some stuff, singing, creating things and... well, basically living a life and participating in some action would have broken up the tedium. Also, making Morfydd Clarke - who blew my socks off my feet in Saint Maud - appear dull is a crime!

 

But I think it's got the bones of something special in there. I'm hopeful the first episode was just a little hump the production needed to get over, and will settle into something special. I don't give a monkeys how they treat the lore; all we need is a good story, well told.

The second episode is better paced, I thought.

I loved both episodes. I agree that some of the dialogue felt a little forced, but it wasn't enough to take me out of the experience. My wife ended up sitting through and enjoying both episodes as well, which was a surprise to both of us.

Valinor and the two trees was visually breathtaking

 

but needed a little more explanation. I had to do a lot of backfilling for my wife on the trees, Morgoth, Valinor, etc.

 

Of course, rights probably didn't permit this.

 

Oh, one thing I really didn't like was the stupid

sped-up footage during the orc attack. What was all that about?

 

Also, Bronwyn's character so far has been Tits McGee. Strange choice.

Two episodes in and I know it's a different thing and all that but it feels like it's missing a Baggins. An emotional through line to hook me into the story instead of constantly hopping between fifteen different people in fifteen different places all doing their own stuff.

 

Also The Stranger is clearly

Just watched ep 1. I thought it looked lovely in places, a bit “Hobbit” in others and was very very boring. I didn’t hate it at all and I’ll keep going but there’s absolutely nothing there to hook me in to be honest. Hopefully ep 2 will have it! 
 

All of this “the source material must be 100% stuck to” is as inevitable as it is boring. Christ if that’s the zippiest, Tolkien be damned, let’s make it modern opening hour they had in them God knows how long the book takes to get going! 
 

Books and TV are entirely different mediums. The book was also written a very very long time ago. Sometimes things will change and sometimes those will be bad changes and sometimes they’ll lead to something great. Hopefully this’ll be the latter. Hell they’ve spent enough on it to at least give it a few more episodes before judging it as sacrilege.

I probably issed discussion on who meteorman is, but my kids started throwing out theories which I had to address with them:

It can't be Gandalf, because he didn't arrive until the 2nd age with Saruman and Radagast.

 

However, it would be one of the Blue Wizards who, in later writings, arrived around the time the show is set. And where it was made explicit that Saruman and Radagast arrived at the grey Havens by boat, the blue wizard were left pretty much up in the air.

 

However, the effect of the arrival on the leaves in Lindon and him killing the fire flies make me suspect Sauron could be a possbility.

 

 

One thing I'm a bit upset about is this is going to come with a LOTR style making of disc :(

Yeah, the tifle settle is poor looking, especially since they make that teaser one that was amazing.

Episode 2 was so bloody good haha. Just absolutely phenomenal telly start to finish. I’m IN.

As someone who  has little interest and  despises the LOTR movies , including the Leprechaun ones , the 1st episode of this was actually OK, far more interesting and competent than that Wheel of time thing and the leprechauns had Irish accents, including Lenny Henry's which was surprisingly decent.
