Ghost of Tsushima - New Sucker Punch IP

The cutscenes are a lot more bearable in NG+ which lets you skip them. It's pretty silly that they went to the effort of allowing the skip, but disabled it for the first playthrough. But generally I found them to be short and to the point. I don't have much patience for those typical 'long ride to the mission plus exposition chatter' setups and whilst there is a bit of that, it's not like you're ever forced to travel vast distances.

Maybe I'm lucky in that I've never played an Assassin's Creed game so the formula feels less stale. The nearest analogue for me is probably the Far Cry games which did get pretty boring after about three very similar outings.

Rolled into this off the back of Cyberpunk, and really enjoying it; sure, it's probably cod-Japanese history as filtered through Kurosawa movies, but Iaijutsu standoffs never get old.

The landscape is stunning, and I find myself simply riding through in Ronin kit and straw hat, looking for smoke, hills, rocks to investigate.

Currently in the second area - have possibly indulged in too many side quests.

I've been carefully doing everything. I'm about 30 hours in and am part way through Act 2 buy have plenty of sidequests in that area left.

I enjoy just running around on Tsushima tbh. It's one of the best realised game world's I've ever explored.

In terms of the game, the difficulty is ramping up but fortunately I'm pretty much the terminator at this point. Casually walking into enemy camps and slaughtering everyone is fun, buy getting all those challenges is better.

Yeah, they pace the introduction of new enemies well; now getting spotter hawks, groups with two brutes, guys who set their swords on fire, archers who set off three arrows in quick succession...

Keeps you on your toes. Or off your toes and rolling around more...

I've played this for like 3 hours and I'm obsessed. The training scene with your uncle with all the red leaves on the ground was incredible with the way they all whirled up. The combat is very satisfying - nothing like parrying someone and then charging a stab in the neck. I'm not sure I've played a game this beautiful ever in my life.

Likes:

- NPCs you follow to objectives match your speed so there's never that weird walk-run thing where they're slightly too quick for a walk and slightly too slow for a run.

- There's no minimap to stare at and miss the scenery.

- There's a Japanese dialogue/ English subs option

Dislikes:

- The Japanese dialogue is dubbed over English lip-sync and it's kind of terrible, I'm switching to English next time I play :(

So far it's one of my favorite games and I highly recommend it, I understand that MSRP is expensive but this a rare occasion where I was happy to pay it.

A listing here on eBay has it for £30 (+£1.83p&p) which seems reasonably low considering it's been nearly £50 previously. Depends what you're after.

Thanks for this. Very tempted to pull the trigger but im just going to wait. Already have 3 new AAA games to work through and by the time i get round to this it may be cheaper.

Oh, man, the nature in this. Just finished a mission, and the camera pulls back to reveal a rolling landscape of pampas grass.

Way, way in the distance I can see two flocks of starlings swooping and diving in clouds. Had I just moved off, I'd have missed them - looks like a whole flocking routine thrown in for incidental detail.

Oh, man, just finished Act II, and it's ramping up the soap opera. Love the developing bond between Jin and Yuna. More comrades-in-arms than anything else. And Lady Masako is not to be trifled with, but her backstory is .

33 hours in the bag and I've still not completed Act 2. My OCD for clearing all available sidequests is still strong. I'm almost completely maxed out on my techniques (just need 6 more technique points and I'm done), and it looks as if I'm missing one final piece of armour. I reckon that's an Act 3 piece.

It's just brilliant, isn't it? Such a phenomenally realised game world that's a joy to explore. Totally need that in this current lockdown.

Reckon I'll beat Act 2 today - and may liberate the middle section too. Probably got a couple of weeks left.

Then I need to do all the Legends stories on the map. I'll may chase down all the shrines etc too. And I've not even dropped into Legends mode yet.

Standoffs are getting harder; opponents can fake you out a couple of times, and are now quicker on the draw. On the other hand, get it right and an encounter is now pretty much over when the initial burst of violence is done.

Yeah, I've had some fake a lunge 3 or more times. On the flip side, I can now murder 5 people at a time when I get it right.

I have one final armour upgrade to go, I think.

I still don't use standoffs in camps so much - although in the larger camps, the guards are spaced so you can clear the camp as a series of standoffs. I've been doing the bonus objectives for each, first, to get the small, additional legend boost that goes with it.

Mind you, in Act III, a successful standoff also powers up your

Ghost stance meter

which has come in useful a couple of times.

I have one location in the first area which appears to be a tomb, that I don't think I have ever opened; so I'm hoping to get a final special technique out of that.

Keep an eye on their feet. Once they move it's on

So, I am now totally The Ghost; the legend is complete. Nothing more to spend skill points on. All stances and special techniques learned.

As long as you aren't duelling in pampas grass!

I was awful at the combat when I started but after 10 hours or so it just clicked into place and I was whirling around like a true samruai, looking at forts packed with enemies as a single foe challenge generally just wiping the floor with everyone. Moving from this combat to FF7 Remake with Cloud's blade was a bit of a step down to say the least
