As a lowly vanilla PS4 owner, I wonder if I'd be better off waiting until I have a PS5 to play this...

Yep everything next year & even some of this years games will be re-released on PS5.

The only exception for me will be Final Fantasy 7, all the others I’ll wait till next gen.

As someone who’s seriously considering selling their PS4, this is really the only thing giving me pause.

Which is odd, because I really enjoyed TLOU, but I think the extravagant praise it got has put me off slightly. I’m sure I’ll sell really enjoy the sequel.

I find it disturbing that there is so much bloody violence on display in this game, while its supposed to follow actual historic events. Is this Mongol - Japan conflict something that has been a topic of many Japanese books or movies? Ive never heard of this conflict until this game really, and I wonder how easy it is to talk about the facts of it today, from either side. Because it looks to me like Sucker Punch are providing an endless army of bad guys - an Other - in the Mongols whom the player can mindlessly kill as much as they want without any remorse. Sekiro is an ultra-violent game, but it works because it exists in a magical realism with all kinds of fantasy monsters and undead humans with super powers. Maybe it works out here as well, but the few scenes in the trailer made me take notice since they are real humans being slaughtered.

Otherwise, the game looks pretty rough in my view. Compare the animation work here with DMC5 for example, its pretty bad. Faces look terrible. Environments look great but possible downgrade in lighting and shadows from the previous E3 videos. The title font is atrocious, that has to be a placeholder. It looks like something out of a cheap mobile game. And is it just me or is the protagonist speaking English with a slight Japanese accent..? Hopefully there will be Japanese VOs so you dont have to listen to that crap.

It depends on where you live; in Japan and probably the surrounding countries the Mongol invasions are very famous. Way up there with the Sengoku era and World War 2. But in Japan nobody probably knows the War of the Roses or heard of the Falklands War. What's "world famous" really depends on where in the world you live.

To give an idea of how famous they are, the term 'Kamikaze' derives from these events. Kamikaze means divine wind. There were two invasion attempts made by the massive Mongol army, which was at that time considered unstoppable, and they were thwarted by a hurricane that destroyed the Mongol fleets - both times! Hence, 'divine wind' - the gods (kami) saved Japan. It halted the Mongol expansion and shaped Japanese history.

To be honest, that short post is all I basically know about that bit of history. I don't think there's any controversy there, as it was so long ago and the Mongols at that time are seen as an invading force that wanted to subjugate the entire continent. But you never know, I'm certainly not a specialist! I'm just here because I think it looks cool.

The Mongol invasions of Japan are 'nation defining' events in Japan. The country faced a formidable and seemingly unstoppable enemy, and won. Twice. It's the kind of thing that gets baked into national identity - 'they' tried to defeat 'us', and 'we' defeated 'them'.

That was the word I was looking for. Something to do with national-isms.

That’s very pretty, but I don’t think I’ve stuck any novelty theme for more than 30 seconds. Back to blue I go.

I used to be the same but once you start and stick with them for a while it's a nice change.

I dub this the theme thread. As Wiper says the Tetris Effect Theme's a beaut. Also, these:

I like the Fist of the North Star one because I'm a sucker for themes that adapt o the time of day - log in at night and Kenshiro's taking a moonlight stroll. Also, the Mirror's Edge Catalyst theme is really good, especially given that it's free:

I’ll be saving Ghost of Tsushima and TLOU2 for PS5 I think.

I'm thinking of doing the same. Plenty of other games in my pile of shame, and the new consoles are so close now.
