I did the latest firmware update, it was very smooth and quick.

Great to be able to load any file on a USB stick but there is still no way to change disks while a game is running.

I think it would be hard for them to make that possible without giving users access to the emulator interface.

Hmm no. They already provide an interface for browsing disk files on a USB stick. All they need now is the option to mount a disk instead of loading from it.

Looks good, except the bundled joystick (which looks like the same shitty one with the C64 Mini!)

Hopefully with the full working keyboard it means you can just use standard USB joysticks/joypads, although it would have been nice to have had an Atari 9 pin style connector like the original (so you could use your original joysticks).

A concern is that it still looks like it's essentially the C64 Mini interface (which was an expanded version of the C64DTV), so is it going to be more like the C64 mini in that you'll have to "hack" it to run games that are not on the interface, or will it have a simple SD card interface where you can put your SD card in loaded with games making it similar to the SD2IEC?

The original Indiegogo mock up had an SD slot (and a cartridge slot) but there's no mention of either (and the device looks significantly different anyway).

Actually, just read the whole update and there isn't going to be an SD card slot. It says there are 4 USB ports and you can use an USB flash drive to load your own games.

Quote

The full sized THEC64 has a full working keyboard, comes with an updated micro switch classic joystick which plugs into one of the four USB ports, and connects to any modern TV via HDMI.  It features three switchable modes – boot straight into original C64 BASIC, VIC20 BASIC  or switch to the Games Carousel and play one of the 64 built in games in 50Hz or 60Hz, with optional CRT Filters/Screen modes.

As well as the classic C64 and VIC20 BASIC modes, the pre-installed games include such classics as California Games, Paradroid and Boulder Dash; with new additions like Attack of the Mutant Camels, Hover Bovver, Iridis Alpha, and Gridrunner; topped off with the recently released shoot ‘em up Galencia and text adventure Planet of Death to let you relive the glory days of true keyboard gaming! You can even load and save your own C64 and VIC20 games via USB flash drive as well as access multi disc titles.

“We are delighted to be working with Koch Media once more to bring back even more of the most loved retro games ever on two of the most iconic home computers of all time, and which now has a full working keyboard”, said Paul Andrews, Retro Games’ Managing Director.  “THEC64 full size is a reimagining of the classic C64 computer and the second in a planned series of products on the way.”

THEC64 will hit the shops on December 5 2019 with a suggested retail price of £109.99/€119.99.

How useful is the C64 these days at loading USB games? I know they did a few updates, but I thought it was still a bit flakey?

Chinnyvision didn't rate the original C64 Mini too highly (described the unit as a child's pencil case!)  but the working keyboard would probably address most of his issues with it.

On the video it specifically says it is a micro switched joystick.

The shit joystick supplied with the mini was not micro switched that is why it felt so "vague"

If this is a mini64 in a bigger case with working keyboard then I'm not sure about it to be honest - what do we gain over the original - the ability to play text adventures? Do type in listings from old mag scans :D :D

hang on...

oh no...

I am going to buy one aren't I and then embark on the stupidest idea ever - typing in listings and seeing what the games are like.

AND its a VIC-20 !!!! where is the preorder button! (gah amazon charge in advance now dont they)

oh and the bundled stick can be replaced by this apparently

I guess if it takes standard usb sticks there might be a cheaper option out there too. Also any two player games I can play the oldest game of them all - letting your friend use the shit joystick :D

Really, really tempted by this. I've been toying with the idea of buying a breadbin for years, but have been a bit put off by the logistics involved with using it in my current office layout. Having this working via HDMI would solve that problem.

It's just annoying that Amazon take the money now...

I think if you're really serious about getting a C64, you'd be better waiting for this to be released (which, I will admit, may be some time away!)

I did give the C64 Mini a try and it just felt like a slightly updated version of that C64 DTV unit a few years ago.

Even the games were mostly the same.

While I get it that it may be a fun little toy for some people, I found it a bit lacking, but then I have got a bread bin C64 with an SD2IEC, so I'm probably not the target audience (BTW, the bread bin does have a SCART socket built in, so if your TV has SCART then it should work fine).

I was pondering over what to do with respect to either getting an updated C64 or keeping my old breadbin 64.

However finally decided to scrap both just to go with emulation for the odd time I do want a nostalgia trip:-

Emulation was great a few years back when I last tried it so  I expect it has moved on a bit since.
