Upcycling Consoles

I've an old Mega Drive II and PS2 Slimline that no longer work. Rather than take a fiver for them on ebay for parts/spares, any idea what I could do to upcycle them? I've tried google for ideas but other than turning the Mega Drive into an iphone dock, which looks shit, I've come up with nothing.

 

Guessing the PS2 might be a lost cause as the shape of it doesn't lend itself to...well, anything. Sure I could turn the MD into something vaguely useful though. More useful than a pencil holder, anyway.

Stick a raspberry pi in there. take the console to bits, sling the broken insides, wash and restore the case and make it a project.

What's the issue with consoles? You may be able to fix them?

The Mega Drive makes a great tissue box.

I wouldnt even know where to start but I do have a question about this. If, say, you were to do this with a PS2, could you "rescue" the controller ports and use them as input devices for emulation?

 

I've taken many a Dreamcast apart before and the insides of that are literally Powerboard, controller board then the main board with the disc reading gubbins attached to it, just wondering if it'd be as simple as disconnecting the controller board and anything it connects to on the main board, soldering it all together with the Pi then somehow finding the software to map that as a method of input?

 

Like I said, I have no idea when it comes to anything like that so probably wouldnt even try it!

Well in all honesty I don't have a clue but I'd take the entire contents out, leaving you with a plastic case, follow the guide on this forum for making a Pi emulation machine, use Bluetooth controllers and if feeling confident, use a short cable to allow you to mount a HDMI connector on the back, in the pace of the regular output.  likewise with the power.

Personally I'd try to find a USB to PS2 controller adaptor, fashion the gubbins of that into where the standard controller ports go, or maybe just replace the USB port on the front of the PS2 with a USB extension lead from the Pi board and use a 360 pad
