Joker origin film - Joaquin Phoenix Confirmed

Not directed at you but I'm enjoying the shit, superfluous fan theories gathering around this film already. Some comic fans seem to have trouble with the idea that this is a standalone character piece.

"But he'd be in his 60s by the time Bruce Wayne becomes Batman! Maybe he's just going to be the inspiration for the real Joker!"

I dread to think of the effect that prolonged exposure to terrible comic book writing has had on people like that. Not everything has be be part of some connected multiverse or contain a plot twist.

I agree with most of that but to be fair his relationship to Batman probably should line-up.

and hang on, if they want it to be standalone, why even try to shoehorn a young Bruce Wayne in there anyway? (if that is him).

Why does he have to be the same/similar age to Batman? Why can't he be an evil git that's almost pension age?

I always imagined Joker as older than Batman anyway. The Arkham games in particular paint a picture of a Joker in his 50s, and a Bruce Wayne in his 30s.

Yeah I always thought the Joker was older.

Anyway all of this is conjecture. People are assuming an awful lot based on very little. Personally I'm looking forward to this because it looks so unlike anything Warner's have given us from the DCCU so far.

Well, we do know that he is significantly older than Batman in this film as the kid playing Bruce is the same kid that played a young Phoenix in You Were Never Really Here. I don't mind though, I don't need Batman in this- we know how that story goes.

Hopefully they'll resist heavy foreshadowing but let's see how it turns out.

To give Marvel credit, they’ve created a universe of characters who are all intertwined and connected in some way.

DC just seem to have films that have characters that prick tease you into believing there’s some sort of deep connection between them, but in reality there’s no connection at all, it’s just random stories relying on “brand recognition”.

I'd be happy if this was something that could stand completely on its own feet. I think using Travis Bickle as an influence is a great idea.

It brought to mind more Rupert Pupkin. But I guess they're pretty similar.

I pretty much expect this to be a watered down remake of taxi driver minus the paedophilia, porn theatres and gore.

It's a terrible shame that they've become so boring though. The first wave of films was thrilling but when I watch them now I find it difficult to stay awake. It feels like the world's most expensive soap opera, watched out of obligation instead of pleasure.

Yes, he looked like a Pupkin/Bickle hybrid. The look of the film is pure Taxi Driver.

I loved the trailer but then I look at the director’s filmography....

I kinda like the chemical genius, psychopath (and maybe an immortal interpretation of evil) incarnation of Joker Vs. this slightly "golf sale" man has breakdown approach.  Totally willing to give it a go though.

Cesar Romero was 11 years older than Adam West.  Canon.

Eh, an average script doesn't necessarily mean certain doom or anything. Cinema is a visual medium, there's a whole lot more to a film than just words on a page. For example, Alien is just a futuristic take on a haunted house, in someone else's hands it could have been as average as the script made it sound. Photography, set design, performances, the score...these can turn an ordinary script into a great movie.

That said, I'm not sure anyone was clambering to see a Clown Prince of Incels take on the character. Joachim's gonna need to bring his A-game for that to work.

Sigh. It's DARK, man.

Now a sequel of that, but with the modern, pissed off old man killing hundreds of people version of Liam Neeson?

I'd definitely pay to see that...
