I've been following the progress of this for years.  The author posts comparison screenshots on Gaf now and again. I'm hoping this gets an official nod from Capcom and they release it as free DLC.  I'm waiting until they finish this before giving it a play through.

I played the ultimate pack many years ago (this was the first pc RE 4 release) and it did look pretty amazing. It was around RE5 standard in certain areas; The place where you first meet the Merchant and get the sniper rifle in particular looked really impressive.

I did find this part interesting. He's trying to add a fog filter but it's not working.

My memory of the GC version is it was quite foggy but I'm fairly certain that was just the flicker filter. Unsure how it'd work/look in HD.

Wait, he's been going to the actual places where the devs took their material from and taking higher resolution photographs!?

This project has now reached a stage where it is playable from start to finish with improved visuals for the majority of the game, you can download it to try now:

Been following this for a little while.

It's appalling that it takes loads of passionate fans to do something like this when Capcom clearly have the resources to pull it off. Their work on RE4 HD Remaster is pathetic compared to this, they are so lazy and seemingly have no pride in one of their defining masterpieces.

The texture work here is shockingly good (to say nothing of the other improvements) and demonstrates something i've felt for many years - that poor texture are one of the biggest remaining problems with games generally (with PC games frequently dragged down to console level and the console level being decided by a focus on shinies and low-RAM hardware) and that old games can be made to look much better with just the addition of better textures.

It's been like this since Mikami left.

Capcom could pay this guy for all his texture work, update the engine, redo the models, and release Resident Evil 4k for next gen.

All the fiddly hard work has been done already.

Do they have to manually update each texture or is it procedural? He do they even make any money?

It's a manual process. You need to go out and get new photos of suitable materials in order to make the textures, at this level of texture quality anyway.

It's a painstaking labour of love.

Cris and Albert started working on this in Feb 2014 so have been working on it for nearly 4.5 years at this point.  Albert actually lives in Spain if I recall correctly so it's easier for him to go to the texture sources (that they can find) and take photos.  I actually remember Cris starting the thread for this at the beginning over on Neogaf and all he got was "why bother, spend your time doing something else", "Yeah right!" etc and now over 4 years later he's having the last laugh.  Absolutely phenomenal work so far and what I love is how close they are trying to stay to the original sources as possible.  Of course it's always going to be a little different just due to the nature of the work but this is a true labour of love.  Not some of those shitty mods where they don't seem to even remotely respect the game they're moddings original inspirations etc.

Just installed RE4 in Steam and then the HD pack as the instructions on the official page says. Also used the small patch tool. When starting the game on Steam I first get a black screen and then back to the Steam desktop where I can see the RE4 logo running down in the taskbar but I have no cursor and can't click or interact with anything. I can hear the game menu running in the background. I then have to CTRL/ALT/DELETE to log out of the PC to regain any control.

Any tips as to what could be wrong here?

So, you know how part of this project was tracking down the original sources for the textures in the game? It turns out that a bunch of the textures (including for the logo) may come from the CD ROM in an art sourcebook, and they were never licensed. One of the textures comes from a building that can’t be publicly accessed, and the Capcom leak included the files from CD-ROM with their original file names.

On the up side that will make it way easier for the HD project to find them.
