Currently asking if anyone has heard the tragedy of darth plagueis the wise...

the quote is from THEIR faq, not the actual reporting, which is nothing but a regurgitated press release, and puts games shack on my shit list.

The mid tier gaming PC line is the only approach to this that makes sense, given the price probably limits its interest to nostalgia heads. And it could be a (relatively) cool looking living room box for a young trendy who wants something a bit different to run his Netflix and Spotify players on.

"Mid-tier" PC makes me think of a machine that can play the latest and greatest new releases, but not at maximum detail levels, though. A step-up from "entry level" - which should still be capable of playing latest games at low detail levels. Is this likely to be the case given what we know about the CPU and internals?

No.

Processor below 2GHz, low amount of memory - this thing will be lucky to play AAA PC games that are 3-4 years old. There's probably a whole slew of retro-themed indie titles that would work, but surely the whole point of this was the retro angle NOT the modern PC?

Aside from the fact this is BS, the idea of Blockchain based digital ownership is actually kind of intriguing. It would allow you to sell digital goods and prove the change of ownership. But it's just artificial scarcity, it'd be easier to just copy it. A problem in search of a solution. But you could do stunts like have limited release digital copies (at least til someone cracked the DRM, which would take about 5 seconds no doubt).

"Despite our team's aggressive efforts to avoid it, Atari VCS deliveries are delayed just a little bit longer..."

Like they kneecapped a bunch of delivery workers for not loading the pallets fast enough and then stood around discussing how they hadn't thought things through.

Looks like they following the same playbook as the Vega+ gang? That ends with them shipping some woeful minimal viable product just to fill their obligations to Kickstarter and then vanishing, doesn't it? Only I think it will be a little harder for "Atari" to vanish. They have a chain of hotels they have to open, to start with.

Ok so somewhat surprisingly, looks like the first backers - or perhaps, just one backer - has received his. And less surprisingly, it looks like it's a complete mess.

You have to use a Chrome account to access the streaming services (not sure what it means by this but I'm guessing its Netflix and stuff) - and it doesn't allow multiple people's accounts to be stored on the device, so if you're using this as a set-top box, anyone sharing it has full access to the Google account of the person logged in.

You have to plug a keyboard and mouse in to use any of the Chrome services, too, the controllers won't work.

Button inputs on the controllers are wired differently depending on whether you're using the controllers via USB or Bluetooth.

The shop doesn't work - the guy in the video got charged twice for his purchase, and didn't receive his product.

This guy seems to be the only person who received his - there's no other videos from people who have them on Youtube and none have appeared on eBay.

Just to add there was a comment from Atari in the comments:

Hi! Thanks for posting your honest first impressions. We are actually amazed that you got your VCS on Saturday 12/12! Wild. Anyway, by the time we write this, the payment/download glitch should be fixed and there will be more games and contact coming, so you are correct about the potential. As stated many times, we are laying the foundation right now and using the next couple months as a beta to work with you and other backers to refine and improve the experience in advance of the full retail launch in early 2021. This is just the beginning!

Yeah that was my initial thought but it's not like they are RCL Ltd and can just vanish.

Whose going to have faith in their Atari hotel chain and Atari cryptocurrency if they do that?

It's a business like any other, can easily do a runner. Many a crowdfunding thing have disappeared over the years, Vega had Sinclair involved.
