Metroid Prime 4

Has Metroid ever really had a fair crack at making it big since the SNES? Prime 1 and 2 launched on a console that was dead on arrival and 3 came out when most Wii’s were long forgotten Wii Sports machines.

Samus Returns was chucked out on 3DS after everyone had bought a Switch, as well. Nintendo do some pretty bloody strange things with the franchise.

Metroid Prime 3 came out in the launch year.

It doesn’t quite get the memory hole treatment f-zero and advance wars do, or the 'just put out any old crap' starfox does, but they certainly seem to have the Metroid series left down the back of the couch quite a bit.

Which is a pity, done right it could be the sort of game which helps attract people who wouldn't necessarily otherwise buy a Nintendo system.

Metroid, Zelda and Smash Bros were like the three most important franchises in the West because they were basically the only action franchises Nintendo owned.

I get the feeling they want to put family friendly cutesy platformer shooter Splatoon where Metroid was in the lineup, given how popular it was in Japan.

If I'm really honest, I don't get why Nintendo is still making Metroids. Indies are currently far more capable of providing proper Metroidvanias and Nintendo itself seems to be experimenting a bit too much with the franchise. Other M, Samus Returns and (to a lesser extent) Federation Force are OK games, just not bannermen for the franchise they are part of.

It would make more sense to fund another year of Splatoon 2 DLC then reboot MP4 like this. Regardless of how much I would personally prefer the latter.

If they'd be going down that road, Smash Bros. Battle Royale with Splatoon controls would've already been a thing. :) I'm not sure they need a lot of single player games, just a couple. And Mario & Zelda seem to be doing fine for that.

So when most Wii’s were gathering dust.

Ha. But I don’t remember that at all, strange. I seem to remember Prime 3 being a mixed bag though, with changes to the world design but fair enough, at least it wasn’t put out to die.

Perhaps I’m getting it confused with Other M. That was a great game but Samus was treated horrendously in that. Think that was Namco.

Yeah but when is next one of them coming? I'd like to see games such as Prey and Dishonored on Switch, and onbviously MP Trilogy whilst we wait for MP4.

Team Ninja to be precise.

@mdn2 absolutely nailing it.

Well yeah, they obviously think the brand has some value, otherwise they wouldn't keep on trying to reinvent it at every available opportunity, it's hardly F-Zero or Star Fox levels of irrelevance yet. It's a Killzone-level series, not a Halo-level one like they would want it to be.

You’re such a bore.

I just found it amusing to see somebody claim Metroid was a huge deal in the modern age (you could make a justifiable case for it back in the old days, but at present, nope). What it is is one of those legacy brands that used to be a big deal and has a certain amount of cachet and prestige due to its long history.

It's the sort of thing that if it was an apparel brand or a high street retailer that was up for sale that Mike Ashley would be interested in, or in the case of gaming, his equivalent, Lars Wingefors would love to add to his harem if Nintendo ever decided the brand was worthless. Claiming it was currently popular was just a bit much for my tastes so I asked for proofs.

Namco have a history of making very sub par Nintendo IP games, don’t they? It’s not the sort of studio you’d associate with a game like this, either.

Donkey Konga more or less makes up for all of the missteps, but yes, Namco's collaborations with Nintendo have often been a bit lacklustre, in a way that seems to suggest the two companies don't really mesh. Though I hear some wrong-uns quite like the Pokken games...

I think it will be a big deal on Switch, it's the perfect platform for it now that Nintendo have moved away from being more casual with Wii and making consoles for gamers again. People have been going on about it constantly since its initial announcement.

I think it has the cachet and prestige due to being a series’s of (mostly) incredible games. Just because they haven’t released a good one in quite a while doesn’t diminish appetite for the franchise, just look at The Force Awakens.

As long as we get a Metroid Prime Trilogy Switch port, that’s fine.

At this point, it's all but been confirmed. My worry is that with the release of 4 being so far away now, they'll continue to hold the port back to build brand recognition and anticipation nearer 4's eventual release.

Trilogy confirmed for holiday 2020* :omg:

*fucking likely <_<

Well if the Trilogy has been “ready to go” for a while and they were waiting for the build-up to Prime 4 to release it (as the rumours have been saying for a while) they might think now is a good time to pull the trigger to cover some holes caused by covid?
