Yeah i saw that last week - makes it sound like we might found out sooner than later. Direct for January?

Let's me honest - this year is looking pretty barren for the switch. There needs to be a big game released Feb/March if Zelda isn't till May.

Current rumors are that Zelda will be the last big game for the Switch before a new Switch in 2024 (which doesn't sound right, surely they can't just stop supporting switch with major titles for 9 months).

Fire Emblem is end of January, obviously depending on whether you’d consider that a big game :)

There’s also the Kirby remake and Pikmin 4 that we know about.

Yes. But there have been rumours of an updated more powerful Switch since the day it was released. So you know, we can probably just ignore them all.

I'd also say that the Switch has absolutely no need of any extra releases. A small fraction of the audience complains constantly about holes in their release schedule whilst all their existing software still sells massive numbers to new and existing owners. I honestly think they could release just 2 "big" first parties in a year and get by just fine for a while.

Kirby and Pikmin i wouldn't class as big games really. If Kirby was a sequel to Forgotten Lands then maybe.

Fire Elblem - i guess so, i'm not sure i would call it mainstream although then again Metroid was more niche till dread.

Yes, but this would be a sucessor not a pro or anything like that. I think it's fairly clear a new machine will be out by next year. No Nintendo console would have had a run that long.

I'm a big fan of the switch, but it's gotten to the point where anything 3rd party related runs like crap on the switch. And there really isn't enough Nintendo stuff that keeps me entertained too long lately - 2017 was a fantastic year for titles, 2019 to some extent. Last year just didn't do much for me besides Kirby and Bayo3.

Last year was pretty meh - worst year personally - Kirby and Bayo were good though.

But we're that tiny minority. Of course I want a successor/pro (I will assume it has backwards compatibility, the difference is whether games must keep supporting the original). But "it's fairly clear" nothing in my opinion. The Pro was a nailed on being announced certainty at multiple points last year,. right up until the actual Direct or date it was supposed to be revealed at.

Times have changed. Console generations are changing, have changed.

I hope we see one. I'd like more core games (new 3D Mario, a new Mario Kart, etc) but I separate my desires from what I expect Nintendo to do these days. They're just such a had one to pin down.

Yeah, I agree you just don't know with Nintendo.

Digital Foundry claim a Pro was due, but was cancelled due to chip shortages and the success of the Switch itself. End result - we only got the OLED portion of that machine.

A lot of the people who played Switch i know sold theirs for a Steamdeck, so if that's anything a bit of competition isn't a bad thing for Nintendo. Obviously for the kids it's not a big deal though.

I do wish we had another 3D Mario by now though. It just seems a waste they have a movie being released when a new game would have been great timing for the Switch.

Obviously take this was a shovel of salt, but on Reddit someone has DM'ed a mod on /GamingLeaksAndRumours stating:

'Do you think everyone is primed and ready?'

This same person hinted in the same manner announcements for; Skyward Sword, Wario Ware, Splatoon 3 and Zelda which were all correct as they had Directs announced just after.

Fingers crossed :)

That rumour is for Metroid Prime HD.

The newest set of rumours as far as I know is that Nintendo decided against a remaster of Metroid Prime Trilogy and instead commissioned Retro to do a full HD remake of the games starting with MP. However it doesn't mean all three games have to come out before MP4, the idea being that MPHD is released to increase hype for the new game. So fuck knows if it means actually getting all 3 remade or what.

Again, all the "insiders" have been mostly poor but at least Retro is an American studio so more likely someone might catch something.

None of those three are Zelda/Mario/Splatoon tier when it comes to sales but I think Three Houses is the best selling FE to date so it’s obviously picking up traction and should so pretty well. Discounting Pikmin 3 remaster on Switch it’s been so long since a Pikmin game it’s hard to predict how it will fare, but, you know, it’s a Shigeru Miyamoto game so I’m always on board.

I think we will see new hardware this year but it will be another iteration of the Switch Lite, likely an OLED model with the same dimensions pretty much but also a bigger screen.

The actual Switch 2 will most likely be released sometime next year, 2024. By that point all the Mario Kart booster courses will have come out, along with any Splatoon 3 DLC, Xenoblade etc. leaving 2024 wide open for the new hardware and associated releases. Still room in 2023 for a ‘New’ Mario though ;)

I honestly believe Metroid Prime 4 will a Switch 2 launch game now that we know for definite that Tears of The Kingdom is out in May (and you don’t get much bigger than that).

Oh I see yeah I just re-read it sorry.

I can deffo see MP4 bring a launch game for Switch 2, it would be a good game to show off the new power and the originals were cutting edge at the time. It will be kind of a bummer if the new one comes out and looks compromised, you can get round the limits of the Switch with a good art style but something like this has so many direct comparisons in the genre to fall short to.

I think I'm right in saying that Switch Sports, Mario Strikers and Fire Emblem: Three Hopes hadn't even been announced at this point last year and were all out before the end of June.

I'm curious to see what the Metroid Prime redo ends up being. Rumour started as a Prime Trilogy port of some sort and then became a rumour of a Prime remaster/remake with the terms used so interchangeably it's hard to know just how much work is being done on the game.

As for Prime 4 I doubt we'll see anything of it until Nintendo unveil the Switch successor.

On the 17th of September.

It’s funny when people say the release schedule is barren when there are already more exclusives we know about than for PlayStation and Xbox combined.

And also because Nintendo tends to announce many titles close to release. There will be plenty more revealed for this year, I'm sure.

The only people really saying that though are the sort that dismiss anything that isn’t a sequel to something they played on the Gamecube.

The “Switch had a great first year then they haven’t released anything since” crowd. Stuff like Splatoon, Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing will never count in their eyes. It has to pretty much be Mario/Zelda/Metroid and even then it can’t be Paper Mario or Metroid Dread for some reason.

There are? Or do you mean games with confirmed release dates?

Fire emblem in a couple of weeks, Kirby in Feb, Bayonetta Origins in Mar, Zelda in May, Pikmin is still TBD, but it’s not bad for the first six months and bolstered by quite a few multi platform releases, it’s far from barren.

I don’t think it’s barren though going on your original post it doesn’t top the number of exclusive games xbox and PlayStation have slated for the first half of the year.

On the subject of multi-platform releases, unless it’s an indie game with an especially vivid colour scheme that looks great on an OLED I can’t imagine any of those games will mean much for your switch with a steam deck on the way!

What games are coming out for Xbox and PlayStation? (I’ve just checked and I can find Forespoken in Jan on PS, and then FFVII part 2 later on, Forza on Xbox some time in Spring)

Steam Deck on hold btw :( I need to make a choice between that and PSVR2, mainly because I barely use all the consoles I already own, and my Switch backlog alone is massive, oh and also my wife.

btw one of the third party games is Octopath Traveller 2, should look great on the OLED ;)

Also! Fitness Boxing Fist of The North Star is out too, I think in March :omg:
