Long interview with Blomkamp about Oats Studio.

Quote

The Verge recently spoke with Blomkamp by phone about how Oats Studios came to be, his take on the state of the film industry, and what really happened to his Alien sequel.

That was really good, some startling imagery. And plus one to Blomkamp for not shoe-horning Sharlto Copley in there.

I'm honestly not sure I could take a full length movie that was quite that grim. Blomkamp is a really odd one, after District 9 he really looked liked being the next big director, but both Elysium and Chappie disappointed. I'd be interested to have seen what his Alien movie would have been like, but if losing that meant he could make stuff like this - which I think works better than his feature length stuff, then I'd say it's worth it.

How long before it's announced it's going to be picked up and reshot for a feature?

I didnt realise these were out yet, or were coming on such a regular basis.

Have to say, I'm very happy. The format suits him, as does the online publishing.

It does feel like most of the budget goes on the vis-dev side of things, which was always blomkamps strongest skill, and tbh I like to geek out on design and good composition too so I'm chuffed. I always suspected that's why he favours the slow, lingering static shots over fancy camerawork. And it's interesting to see him worldbuilding in the most broad strokes, very conceptual rather than detail oriented. Something about deliberate limitation breeding creativity, etc etc.

As an aside, I also get the sneaking suspicion  he's played some xcom in his time. :)

Cant wait to see more. How long a run are we expecting?

I really enjoyed that second one, perhaps more than the first one. The era was created well and the gore effects nicely done too. Like Rakka, it stops just as it's about to kick off, and it makes me wonder if there will be a second part to either one. They both build up the back story quickly and effectively.

It felt a little Tour of Duty meets Predator, but became something else entirely with the guy's story.

Where's he getting the funding? I'd say they must run a couple of milion each?

I'm not entirely sure I like them. I mean, I like the ideas going through both Rakka and Firebase, but I honestly don't think they're particularly well directed at all. They feel distinctly B-Movie in tone. Is that the idea of them, or is it simply a result of the limited funds available? I dunno, the effects on both the two I've seen are pretty good, and definitely pique my interests, but I don't think they're actually that well done.

I'm very much confused by them.

Every single one feels like a borderline pisstake. The scripts are absolutely horrendous, the acting wooden and painful. There's immense talent in the VFX, concepts and visuals but Blokamps original stuff (can't remember the name, with the robot police etc) was leaps and bounds ahead of all of this.

I'm taking them as a pretty overt excuse to try lots of vfx/design stuff tbh, which I'm fine with.

Like, in firebase, for example. The story was bizarro enough already without sending that young GI across time and space just to see some crazy Red Alert style warmachines, but he wouldnt have been able to shoehorn them in otherwise. It very much feels like a narrative machine to walk you through a portfolio.

Again, no complaints from me. I'm always obsessively browsing portfolios anyway, so....

I tell you what I did get from Firebase though - it felt very much like the sort of thing Hideo Kojima would have done. Vaguely bonkers idea, with a lot of fairly fancy sfx along with some ghastly dialogue and slightly naff direction.

Blomkamp would probably be the perfect director of Metal Gear :P

Cooking with Bill reminds me of Too Many Cooks and that bizarre fake advert for some 90s drink that ends with the creature impaling the mom and kids or something like that (edit: Liquid Slam)

Could be onto something there, Hideo is a fan.

Also, the main guy from Firebase looks just like Michael Biehn in Terminator getup, and you don't need me to post the boxart...

Not to mention this :
