RACE: 4.30pm Sunday 28th May (BT Sport)

QUALIFYING : 9pm Saturday 20th May and 21st May (BT Sport ESPN).

There's more interest in this even than I can remember in recent history, due to the participation of Fernando Alonso in a McLaren branded Andretti Honda car. Who else will be watching?

Honda have been through a few engines during this week, but Alonso's performance has been astounding, and just in case you think this is a shit field or an easy race, look at Bourdais getting trashed in the wall. He's a 2 time champ car champion and multiple race winner, he's lucky to be alive and was chasing 231mph.

Alonso will need a pile of luck to win, but my god he's done a hell of alot for the sport. Maybe Montoya will chase that Le Mans drive now....? In fact it could be argued with those multiple Daytona 500 wins.....

Must make a refreshing change to what he's been used to for the last couple of miserable seasons, although I wonder what he was thinking when they changed his Honda engine this morning ;)

I'm looking forward to this race so much more than Monaco next week. F1 has some real fundamental issues they need to resolve but I'm not sure there are any ways to really fix it in the next few years.

Maybe one of you can answer this.

They've announced Davison to replace Bourdais.

But qualifying is over and no-one qualified the car.  What's the rules mechanism to allow it to race, or is it "We're all going to look the other way 'for the show'".?

I believe it's a case of the latter these days.

They'll probably take a look at him during this week's practice to make sure he successfully shakes off the rust (he's not a rookie) but in general it seems to be a case that they'll just be glad to have the full 33. Back in the day when 50+ cars would turn up, things were different.

Was kind of hoping Stefan Wilson would get the seat myself.

Stefan didn't have the budget apparently.

It turns out btw, there is an actual rule.

Rule 8.4.3.4.1 posted:

The fastest thirty-three (33) Cars completing Qualifying attempts on Saturday shall start the Race. However, for every Car unable to complete their Guaranteed Attempt, as described in Rule 8.4.3.4, there will be an equal number of temporary positions available at the rear of the starting field.

Ah, good find.

In a way it's a shame Davison is getting that ride; no offence to the guy, but he hardly set the world alight before. That car is fast - in the right hands it could potentially be a front-runner.
