The Orville - hang on, its actually good!

Recommended Posts

I'm slightly impressed the porn episode aired on Fox.

Think I'd disagree though, that was another proper mystery-of-the-week TNG episode.

Spoiler

Final outcome was a bit harsh, I think Picard et all would have somehow saved everyone

Also, that episode really made me wish TV content was HDR. Some great shots right next to the star.

You just wanted to see Issac getting his dome licked by a horny Moclan in retina burning 1000nit brightness.

A bit disappointed in the first two episodes.  Lots of relationship stuff felt more like Love Boat than Sci Fi.  Some funny bits but the porn addiction thing seemed a tad preachy.

The most recent Family Guy was also about porn addiction, so seems like a topic on his mind.

Starting S2 now. The way this show imitated the shooting style of TNG was really impressive in S1, but I think what makes this such a great follow-up is its clear-eyed understanding that TNG was often a workplace drama as much as an SF show.

Episode 3 spoilers

So, has she left the show permanently? Is it related to conflict of interest with her dating Seth in real life, or due to her getting other roles on Netflix? Could only really see these two rumours about it.

Spoiler

Yeah, gone for good. Scheduling conflicts seems to be the main theory, though there doesn't seem to have been anything official. Character being replaced with another young female of the same species apparently.

Also another way in which it's similar to TNG.

So how do I go about watching this without wearing and eye-patch?

Didn't Rocket give you a new eye?

I'm enjoying this but i honestly feel it doesn't know what it is. Is it trying to play it straight like older star treks (i have never watched any star trek series before) or is it supposed to be a parody?

Because honestly it's mostly entertaining but it has these weird jarring moments that seem out of place with the rest of the episode. Episode 3 was decent, very light on humor. Then there are episodes that have an almost family-guy quality to them.

I can only assume Seth MacFarlene is trying to step away from his other shows and try something new, but seems to have to put some silly gags in every so often.

I wouldn't say it's playing it straight as it's clearly not, but this is very much a show of two parts.
The scifi plots at the core of each episode are absolutely 100% in the style of Star Trek The Next Generation, to the extent that you could lift out the characters of Bortus, Isaac and co and replace them with Worf, Data and Picard and it wouldn't feel out of place.

The court room episode where they were deciding the future of Bortus and Klyden's daughter was classic Will Ryker stuff, and the one where Isaac was stranded on the planet with the doctor's kids was pure Data.

That's then overlaid with a bunch of Family Guy jokes that sometimes come to the fore and other times disappear into the background entirely.

The jokes are definitely fading, it's basically a mashup of various Treks with a bit of comedy now. I like it, it's comfort food.

MacFarlane said that he was going to cut the comedy down a bit this season. It's great fun and all but it just makes me want a proper modern Star Trek series in the TNG/Voyager/DS9 style.

Discovery is also fine, but it's just Mass Effect the TV series, it isn't Star Trek.

I’d say the closest point of comparison for me in terms of comedy is Red Dwarf. The humour comes out of how people react to the sci fi situations and each other and not from gags as much, and it has a good line in pathos and irony.

The whole style of it just gelled for me early on far easier than I expected. This could have been atrocious but it’s quite the opposite.

decent start to the season ramping up nicely to episodes 3 & 4 which are as good as S1. This time round I can't easily identify the TNG stories they were "homaging" which is a good sign!  For instance episode 4 caught me out as I thought "Oh a retread of Lessons" and then it threw a curveball which then turned it around completely. Episode 3 reminded me of a Worf episode but, again, the story went its own way in the final act. It really seems to be finding its feet very well.

Loved the one off appearances by Trek "favourites" as well , hope they continue.

The "B" plots in episodes tend to be its weakest point - TNG often had B plots that were either funny or compelling but here they feel tacked on. New temp security officer, bridge officer wanting a change etc.

The ratings will kill it in the end though which is pretty sad. I guess there isn't the market for a TNG show anymore.

It was pretty good, but had one big plot-hole.

Would’ve been easy for them to find a way to process/destroy all the remains long before they could’ve been discovered by a visitor. Not a very logical decision for one of the most intelligent races in the universe.

Why would they care? 99% of the time any visitors are ‘halted’ in orbit, assigning valuable resources to clean up on such an unlikely offchance of allowing them to make contact and actually land would be inefficient. It’s like the Borg not caring or treating you as a threat until you do something annoying to them.

Calling it now: Bortus’ porn virus is gonna save the day.

Except there was no off chance of a landing. Issac’s shutdown was designed to force the Orville to visit  Kaylon-1, so the Kaylons had planned all along to use the ship, and with stalling they obviously needed time to get all the pieces in place. It’s an important phase of their invasion, so it makes no sense to risk the Orville’s crew finding the graves and, despite superior Kaylon tech, somehow managing to get a warning to Earth once they realised the full extent of the deception.

The Kaylon are somewhat like the Borg in their complete lack of emotion, but the Borg have never felt the need to use subterfuge or deception either - so the Kaylon aren’t half as powerful despite their advanced tech. That’s why they wouldn’t allow a single potential hitch.
