So this is out in two months, the sequel to the greatest golf game ever made. I put many, many hours into the first and it became probably only the second game I legitimately got very good at. The new swing mechanic is all going to be tough, its based entirely on the tempo, so no more pauses after your backswing. Enhanced social elements to make multi-player easier, along with enhanced graphics, course creator, and its also been announced that all original TGC courses can be carried over to the new one.

Day one for me.

The first was definitely not the greatest golf game ever made, sorry. It is at 66% on Metacritic and 6.3 on user reviews.

I do hope this is better as I'd love more good golf games.

1v1 man, fight to the death.

What are/were the course creation tools like? That is the most interesting part for me. I'd like to create my local courses, how good is the approximation?

The course creator is fantastic but if you want to make something beyond a basic course be prepared to put many, many hours in.

Absolutely loved the first, still play it every week online with friends.  To have over 150,000 courses to play on (and counting) is just unreal!  Also impressive is the fact the course creator is cross platforms - PS4, Xbone and PC. So any courses made on Xbone are available on PS4 etc. No wonder EA have vanished with their golf series, Tiger Woods was superb but gradually over the years it has become quite stale.  Day one for me without question.

That looks great.  Is there a list anywhere of the courses that are currently available?

Nope as there's about 150k courses in game (although about 75% of them are autogen trash).

Basically think of any real world course and there will be a version. Even the one local to me, Tottington, has a recreation in game.

Here's a guy playing, and struggling with Magnolia, which is seen as one of the best courses available in TGC:

The first one didn't click with me, although it was pretty rough when I played it; I think it was still early access on Steam at the time. Have to say I did like the putting in TGC though, the way you could crouch to check the lie of the green. It felt natural yet useful.

Would love a decent golf game on the PS4 though. The latest EA Rory Macilroy game had too much crap added to the actual golf for my liking. The tutorial went on for what seemed like hours and it just lacked the immediacy of previous games, or The Golf Club. So if The Golf Club 2 can get back to something more focused then I'll be getting it.

BTW whilst this may not be totally essential I'd love to see a crazy golf mode, the ability to build crazy golf-style courses with ramps and whatnot. Could be a spin-ff or an extra mode.

Its just straight up golf. No levelling of clubs and stats, everyone on an even playing field and away you go. I've stated the first is the greatest golf game ever (personal opinion, calm it gentlemen) and it takes a lot of learning to master.

In 2 its slightly different in which you have three sets of clubs, beginner (easy as hell to swing with, less distance), player (same as TGC1 pretty much) and tour (hard as hell to be 100% accurate but increased distance).

It just looks so sterile. Never tried the first one, is the gameplay solid? Prob just wait for August and everybody golf

66% on Metacritic. Hopefully 2 is better. I'm probably just waiting for Everybody's Golf too.

Gameplay wise I have to say the first was exceptional. It got terrible review scores on launch, quite rightly as it was a shit show. Screen tearing out the arse, horrendous frame rate, stuttering etc. A lot of people never went back to it, understandably so, and its own math system and putting (so many people didn't understand the marker and it put them off) pushed many away too. It took six months before it was even close to acceptable, by the final 18 months to two years of its life it was a fantastic, fun, challenging round of golf. Its my most played game bar the Borderlands/Trials/FM series, and I can't stomach shoddy controls in any games. Something like 900 hours since I bought it, 650 or so rounds of golf.

It seems they've learnt from their mistakes with 2, all the Twitch streams I've seen and reports I've heard show its a smooth experience, with a brand new tempo swing which will take some practice to become good at.

The worst part is Maximum Games, the publisher, have been utterly woeful in spreading word of mouth for the game. HB, the devs, did three whole Twitch streams, barely any promo material on Youtube/websites, the NDA for Beta testers was never lifted, even when people were streaming early delivered copies. Nothing was known about the course designer until a couple of days close to release and the majority of the media released was primarily around the in game Society system.

So is it worth going back to TGC1 if I haven't touched it in years? It was a bit janky when I played it, and I didn't really get the putting, but might give it another go and save myself some dosh; it'll either scratch te itch and job done, or it'll set me off again.

Its a much, much better game than on launch when I last played it, yes. I'm burnt out to fuck on it, so can't comment on if there's been any changes the past few months. With putting, add one inch for one inch elevation, remove one inch for every one inch downhill, move marker to the math you have and position it left/right of the hole based on break, and aim to hit it the marker distance, not the hole distance. So 20 foot putt down 3 is 17 feet, up 3 is 23 feet (dependent on green speeds).

Just tried it. Hell of an improvement to the first, graphically a notch up (but not wow, it is Unity and a small studio). The new tempo swing is very good, really punishes you for messing up. I've got my swing down on the middle set of clubs, beginner is laughably easy. Tour clubs however are a whole new beast, the slightest fuck up and you're 30 feet right or left of target.

Ball physics massively improved, the wind isn't as harsh as the first, and putting is roughly the same but seems more rapid on downhill. Roll on Friday!

I picked it up on PC yesterday (Greenman have it for cheapest if you have a VIP account, which I do although no idea how/why)

played one round, and having not played the original I found it quite tricky. A bit of time in the tutorial meant I have some idea what's going on but judging how hard to hit shots that aren't at 100% seems a dark art right now.

Havent tried to get online yet but when we can, I see there's some social club thing we could probably have a rllmuk clubhouse on? Hopefully it's cross-platform.
