What Remains of Edith Finch

I was a bit iffy on The Unfinished Swan. It had some nice ideas and some visually striking moments but it never quite came together as a satisfying narrative, and some bits had a tendency to go on too long. I'm thinking specifically of the

spraying water to make vines grow bit

I think it was actually given away free on Plus a while ago, so if you got it then or can get it for around a fiver I'd say it's worth a playthrough. Edith Finch is a significant step up though, for me anyway.

I got the details slightly wrong in my interpretation of Milton's room & story, although I'm not the only one it seems.

Milton is the King in Unfinished Swan, not the boy, whose name is Monroe.

The general point is the same though. It's a nice link. Now I want to play Unfinished Swan again.

It's not much like Dear Esther, which was quite a passive experience and had very flowery prose.

Edith Finch carves its own niche in the genre in certain ways, but if I were to be reductive I would say it most resembles Gone Home, in terms of poking around an empty house and discovering more about the previous inhabitants lives (or in this case, their deaths), and The Vanishing of Ethan Carter in that it feels more interactive than many other entries in the genre. It's not as puzzly as Ethan Carter was, but they both fall, relatively, on the more gamey side of things as opposed to the rather more static, passive experiences offered by Everybody's Gone To The Rapture and Dear Esther.

Couldn't you go around the north pole and down past alaska? Would be a third of the distance.

I've not played The Unfinished Swan - should I?

I'm not sure I'd bother. This is much, much better. TUS starts well but each new game mechanic it introduces is progressively less interesting and detracts from the story. That's partly why I'm so pleasantly surprised by this - really feels like Giant Sparrow learned a lot from TUS and worked out how storytelling and interaction can work together. It's a much more cohesive experience.

This was seriously lovely. In a very strong gaming year I'd say Barbara's, Lewis' and Milton's story are among my favourite gaming moments. Regarding The Unfinished Swan, I'd say this is indeed a much better game but it's still worth playing, not in the least

because it enriches Milton's story

I don't think I've seen anyone, on either here or Neogaf, say they didn't like it. Sadly I think it flew under the radar a bit for a lot of people. Either that or the price put them off, because in a just world this would easily have been as talked about as Firewatch or Rapture.

Hopefully a sale a bit down the line will draw in people on the fence. Even now, after playing so many big hitters, it sits only just behind Breath of the Wild for me so far this year.

I don't recall ever seeing a patch being downloaded for it on PS4, but then I don't really recall it performing particularly badly. There were a few minor framerate drops in places but certainly nothing bad or prolonged enough to spoil the game.

Speak of the devil, this is down to £11.99 in the latest digital sale on PSN.

This makes me happy. I'm always afraid of overhyping things so I am seriously worried someone will come back and voice disappointment, but if you think Edith Finch is disappointing there is clearly something wrong with you, so I don't care.

Is an Xbox release for the game even a possibility? When we asked Ian Dallas, Creative Director at Giant Sparrow, in an exclusive interview we had with him, why they had not released the game on Microsoft’s console, the answer we got was encouraging for those still hoping for an Xbox One release. “For What Remains of Edith Finch we started by releasing on PS4 and PC but we’re still considering other platforms and might have something to announce soon.” he said.

We also asked him what he thought of the Scorpio- might that be something that would enable a port of the game to that platform? “We don’t have development kits for the Scorpio yet so it’s hard to tell, but it’s something we’re looking at,” he said.

This was in May, mind.

Holy shit, 52 minutes? That's about a third of the length of the actual game!

Would you say it's worth the time investment?

I found it quite interesting. Then again, I watched in on a lazy Sunday afternoon. :)

I'm at work so I just put it on in the background.

Personally I'd say the first 30 minutes or so are relatively inessential as it's largely him walking through each character's story. There are a few interesting tidbits in there but it feels like he did it for the benefit of people who haven't played the game but watch his videos.

If you have played the game I'd skip to about 30 minutes in as that's where the more interesting stuff starts. Certainly gave me a bit of a different perspective I hadn't considered previously.

Just did a second playthrough myself to hunt down the rest of the achievements.

Spoiler

Had missed at least one of the peek holes (Lewis's room), also the pool table, and Gregory's letters in the bathtub. Oh and letting the guy finish his song.

Now time to watch that video :)
