Xbox 360 Appreciation Thread

I'm pretty sure Game always put their prices up when they have a 3 for 2 offer on.  They are not going to shift anything at those prices that's for sure.

I picked up Hunted: Demons Forge for £2 the other day, as I had never heard of it, turns out to be a Fantasy version of Gears of War!  It's really rough around the edges but not terrible, and Lucy lawless does some of the voices, worth £2 anyway.

Given the huge total number of releases, far more than I would have guessed, it going to be a case of disappointment far more often than not when the Tuesday / Thursday BC announcements come along.

Great tip about looking through the weekly sales for 360 bargains in the genres you love.

Well, OK. Devil May Cry 4 is reasonable. Prey was good up until the utterly shit bit with your girlfriend. The rest? Nah.

Halo Wars is a great console RTS and Reach is one of the best Halo games on the 360.

Despite being built for a console, Harlo Wars suffers from being impossible to control with a pad.

And "the best Halo" is like "the best STD".

I can't believe this isn't in discussion, I know the machine is over a decade old but with digital delivery it still seems alive and well to me. Hell, I bought some DLC the other month then Akai Katana from the online store just the other day, even when I was collecting up a few missed potential gems the other year it wasn't anything I'd consider retro - and the prices weren't quite dirt cheap as expected! Fortunately no rush means just waiting for the right auction to turn up or whatever. On the boxed front, I've picked up this lot to play through, a bunch of decent second tier stuff, things I've never tried before (Halos - although I did play through some of the original on PC, up to The Library), or whatever just looked fun:

Shadows of the Damned

Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom

Asura's Wrath (almost finished this, that's what the DLC purchase was for)

PGR 4

Gears of War 3

The Saboteur

Prototype

Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts 'n' Bolts

Halo: CE Anniversary

Halo: Reach

Lollipop Chainsaw

The Bigs 2

Prototype 2

Now I've checked I picked this lot up mostly just over two years ago. And I'm only just getting to the end of one of them

As long as there is one good (subjective) game a week it's all good.  The backwards compatibility support for the 360 on Xbox One has already surpassed that of backwards comparability of the Original Xbox on the 360. For example Lost Odyssey (which they gave away for free for a month to XB1 and 360 owners) and Blue Dragon were not available on the Games On Demand 360 store because they were multi disc titles had the work done to them to make them available. I'm sure there's more like that coming, just not every week.

I'm not knocking the programme in any way.  It's just a  question of numbers, meaning any particular week's announcement is likely to be disappointing compared to ones own (fairly small) list.  Making the masterpiece that is Lost Odyssey free for a month was a great offer.

The Halo games are generally excellent or incredible.. unless you have terrible taste. DMC4 is also excellent although a real step back from the ground breaking DMC3.

Hey look! I just did an opinion!

Prey got a lot of love when it came out but I never saw what was meant to be so good about it.  It's just another one of those reasonable 7/10 shooters like Timeshift or Singularity.  It's no Bet on Soldier, that's for sure.

The one I got from here recently is Syndicate. Meant to be really good.

No, it had some great ghost-walking puzzles and the entire opening sequence is one of the best bits of any game ever made ever.

But, it went downhill as the game went on and at the girlfriend bit just went shite.

No, they're tedious and dull. I'm baffled they're held in any regard at all, let alone sell so many copies and keep having sequels made. So many other better - in terms of story and mechanics - FPS games out there.

Halo 3 was mildly fun in multiplayer though, but then even the shittest multiplayer game can be fun with the right people.

Exactly, pretty mediocre after a good start.  The first Halo is nothing short of magnificent.

The first Halo is tedious beyond belief. When I first played it I was convinced I'd been given a dodgy knockoff of the game Halo everyone else was enthusing about, but no - it was the same game.

Glorious spaces that take aaaaaages to walk across. Endless identical rooms. The worst driving controls ever. Yawn.

hahah! The children don't play Halo.

Substitute "children" for 30 something gamers desperately trying to hold on to their past. The point still stands (sort of) :P

See here's my problem with the 360, and PS3. I know that with PS2 backwards I can put a game in and I'm getting that game experience, but the era of downloadable patches led to this thing where developers/publishers would shove out clearly unfinished games knowing they could patch them up later. It may not have been as big a deal early on but I dread to think how unpatched disc games play these days. I can't find the video at work but I watched a presentation about why the 360 was so hard to crack, and is essentially still not fully cracked.

I had a great time with games like PGR4, Mass Effect (especially 2), and any number of XBLA games.

And a special mention for Xbox Live Indie Games, former Community Games. Some exceptionally good games for about 65p: Shoot 1UP, Decimation X3, Score Rush, Echos+, Apple Jack 1 and 2, the radiangames games, Warning Forever, One Finger Death Punch - thankfully a lot of the better ones are now on Steam. A great service, Microsoft criminally neglected the service toward the end.

Mount Your Friends and Hidden In Plain Sight were also mentioned earlier in the thread and are ace.

But that's it. There are no other good XBLIG games.

There's some hidden corkers on XBLIG - Score Rush and Infinity Danger are great shmups.

Qthly Pythly (spelling?) is a brilliant 3D version of snake, like a chilled out Jeff Minter game.

And there's a port of the old ST / Amiga game Onslaught, which I don't recommend anyone play unless they liked it back in the day, in which case you can play Onslaught on XBLIG and maybe the games creator will get some money this time because let's face it, you probably pirated it.

Leave Home, from the same guy, is also great. Fixed-length shooter that adapts to your performance. Superb music. He was on here for a while, I seem to recall.

I'll give you a quick bit of trivia on the game, most of the songs used in the game where added into the game fairly early on, however during the last month or so we had to removed the song Woman from Wolfmother. It was the only song removed as I recalled and I have to remind myself that it got pulled as we spent so long listening to the song in the game. It does however feature in a number of other games on 360 but was pulled from PURE.

Fancy some more obscure music trivia about a great 360 arcade racer, the developer of which was cruelly shut down because their publisher stupidly put out their games against fierce competition?

I worked as a tester on PGR4 (and The Club, but nobody looks back on that as fondly as I do). There was no music to start with, other than The Prodigy track in the intro video. Then one day we came in, and there was music! Hurray! Unfortunately, there was only one track, and it was Ruby by the Kaiser Chiefs.

I fucking despise Ruby by the Kaiser Chiefs, and having to listen to it for 8 hours a day wasn't my idea of a good time.
