SNK Switch Games

There are quite a few SNK games on the Switch by now, but I've never played any of them, as I never had a Neo-Geo, and can't ever remember seeing their games in an arcade when they were still a thing. I've been aware of Metal Slug and King of Fighters, but haven't really heard of any of the others. Do any of these games still stand up, or are they really just for nostalgia? Are any in particular recommended?

Second vote for Shock Troopers. I only played it for the first time a couple of years back and it is an outstanding game. The multiple routes give it tremendous replay value, and the soundtrack is fantastic.

Although Metal Slug 3 isn't my favourite of the series (that accolade goes to the original) it is truly amongst the greatest 2D games ever made. The sheer love poured into every sprite is clear to see. The final level itself is better than most other games.

Yep, Shock Troopers is pick of the bunch for me. Metal Sling 3 also well worth a go, and both ideal for portable multiplayer.

Of the fighters, KoF 98 is a classic, and I'm also fond of the oddity that is Waku Waku 7; I'm not getting either until there are some vaguely decent gamepads for fighting games, however, as I imagine they'll be nightmarish on joycons.

I've actually found the left JoyCon "dpad" preferable to the 360's dpad and possibly PS4's too, for fighting games at least. I've only used it for KoF 98 so far though.

KoF'98 still stands up today as very little compares almost twenty years on. It's an essential purchase for any platform.

KoF'94 is more for nostalgia. The roots of the series. The game is 'okay', I suppose, but you're honestly better spending time with any of the later revisions.

Have you tried using the joycon as a little arcade stick? Pinching the analogue like it's a little stick whilst pawing at the buttons actually works!

Metal Slug 3 is when the series went a bit rubbish with aliens. The original and X are better in my opinion.

Yeah, this. MS 3 isn't a bad game, but the levels go on far too long. Apparently the original is coming in the next wave, and hopefully MS 2 or X will follow after that.

Never played Metal Slug 3 till I got it on the switch but it holds up brilliantly as a 2D rock hard arcade game.

I really like the high score caravan mode and all the options as well. Recommended. I got shock Troopers too. I'm not overly interested in fighters so am hoping for a few of the other arcade style games on that format.

I'm using the joycons on their side, like a snes pad and the analogue stick holds up just fine for fireball and dragon punch motions to be honest.  And I fucking HATE using analogue sticks (and dpads too for that matter).  Really heartened by how they hold up, bring on Pocket Rumble and Ultra SF2.

Also, Shock Troopers is badass.
