I know a lot of people love it, but Beyond was always my least favourite of the Animatrix shorts. Partly because it was all about atmosphere rather than action so didn't fit with what I really wanted out of the series when the disc came out, and partly because it had what I thought of as the most generically "anime" art style of all of them.

 

World Record and Matriculated were my favourites, largely because of their art styles.

 

But it has been about 15 years since I've last saw them all. Rest assured I'll be rewatching them again within the next few months!

Dunno why anyone is even debating whether it will be good or bad. Has there ever been a fourth movie in any franchise that was good? Has there ever been a new addition to a movie series released 20 years after the original that was any good? Were any of the other Matrix sequels able to do anything other than just churn out more of the same of what people liked in the first movie (gun fights and fancy camera tricks mixed with some heavy-handed philosophy). 

The answer to all those questions is no, by the way. And no Matrix 4 won't be a good film. It might, however, be a passably enjoyable film, for people who are entertained by this sort of thing.

 

Having said that, I rewatched the original trilogy recently (didn't quite make it to the end of the third one) and I found the action scenes mostly very boring. Particularly the scene with Neo fighting hundreds of Smiths.. It goes on for ever and is so repetitive. I seem to remember thinking that when I saw it for the first time at the cinema, too.

Do you mean 20 years after the series originally started, or after a 20 year gap since the previous entry in the series?

The Force Awakens (yes it's good :ph34r:) (if we count the gap after Jedi...)

Question the idea of the messiah/Chosen One story built up in the first film? Introduce a bit of sympathy for the program characters living within the Matrix? Depict a major setting (Zion) that was only mentioned in the first film?

 

There's plenty to criticise in the execution, but the sequels attempted to do a lot of things to build on or recontextualise stuff from the first film.

Looked like a TV movie.


As someone else mentioned, the green tint was a retcon. It wasn’t in the original film and was also removed for the 4k/HDR restoration.

Yes it did. And there is always a Neo. I always got the vibe that Neo and Trin's love was the anomaly in the iteration we watched, rather than it specifically being Neo alone. And the trailer seems to suggest that's the carry forward. The trailer has a very Sense8 feeling to it, which is no bad thing.

Oh yeah, yeah I probably agree with you - I mean I don't have figures but I'm sure years ago there was a worry that releasing it on home formats (streaming, disc, etc.) too early may dent it but I haven't heard anything that would suggest that it does significantly these days, in fact the film  studios seem to be massively in favour of it, right?  Although cinema chains are pissed off, and some actors are not happy, understandably.

I'm sure everyone that loves The Matrix has their own story about first watching it. Mine is a quite odd as I never got to see it in the cinema, only hearing school friends talk about how crazy and brilliant it was. I was 17 and it was released the summer where I started going out with my first proper girlfriend so that may have had something to do with me not seeing it in the cinema. When it was released to buy, which was still VHS back then (fuck me) I picked it up one day on the way back from Uni. Full price as it was just out but bundled in with a few other movies I picked up as part of one of HMVs 3 for £20 deals. 3 VHS movies for £20... you trade in a mint condition Blu Ray now you are lucky if you get 40p. Terrifying!

 

Anyway, I got home and as I didnt have a video player in my room I watched it in the living room with the house empty. I sat cross legged on the floor, not moving a muscle, slack jawed the whole time and when that lobby scene started my head exploded. What the actual fuck is going on here? How is Neo doing that? He isnt the One. Oh my god! Its one of a handful of movie related experiences that will stay with me forever. The sequels were decent but they never got close to re-creating that feeling.

 

That trailer had me back sitting as a 17 year old in my parents living room, not know WTF was going on and just amazed at what I was watching. So many movies nowadays dump almost the entire plot on you but that felt like it kept things suitably mysterious while confirming the world as we know it is going to go bananas once again. I dont want to see or read another thing until its released and I will be at the earliest showing possible.

 

I'm beginning to believe!
