I'm sure I've mentioned this elsewhere in this thread but I still think the best way to handle the Indiana Jones franchise going forward is to have Ford as old Indy, recounting an adventure where a new actor plays him at a younger age (kind of like the TV series). Then you just have the following films with the flashback new actor, allowing Disney to start up a new trilogy of trilogies and ensuring Ford can simply fly around the world and visit new golf courses.

 

 

Disney have confirmed this will be the last Indiana Jones movie.

(I fully expect there to be an Indiana Jones TV show/cartoon on Disney+ before long however....)

None of the original 3 looked alike though. The cinematography and colour grading of the original is still a thing of beauty, but they got progressively worse.

 

I hope they go for a similar look to Raiders for the new one.

It's not quite that good I'm afraid but there's a noticeable improvement, in my opinion. I say that, I've yet to watch it, I'm going off the below screens only.

Is that General Grievous carved into the wall? I know it's supposed to be the Crystal Skull but the one on the right looks very Grievousy. I never noticed that before. It would tie in with the droids being in Last Crusade and Club Obi-wan in Temple.

 

Anyway, it looks better but still a bit off. The only scenes I remember looking anything like the trilogy were the opening car chase, the University scenes with Jim Broadbent and the bike chase in the University grounds (Which I still really like). The stuff shot on sets really stinks the film up. Even more than the CGI at times.

That's like one of those pics of the first five James Bonds all played by different actors over the years. Except it's the same actor over the space of 40 years and he looks like a fucking boss in each one! Even the Covid mask and coffee cup can't hide the absolute ball swingery going on in each shot.

 

The lower the gusset, the bigger the balls.

I have to agree with you.

 

The first maybe 40-60 minutes seemed like a love letter to the old indie movies. It had a similar vibe I think.

 

As soon as they hit South America and more focus on “mutt” the film nose dived into oblivion. Maybe I need to rewatch it

I have never hated Crystal Skull. If you look past it's deficiencies there is much to enjoy. As with the others sometimes it's the little things that stick in the memory. Marion cracking Indy in the face with the mirror in Raiders. The scene in Pancot Palace when Indy and Willy are fretting over whether the other one is going to come to them or not. My favourite which gets me every time is in Last Crusade. It's so simple but it makes me chuckle every time. When the guy bows in front or Marcus. The way Denholm Elliot leans back to avoid the bow becoming a headbutt cracks me every time.

 

In Crystal Skull it's the scene where Indy is being decontaminated after the nuke scene. Fords face when the guy starts brushing his nether regions and he grabs the brush buckles me every time. It's little things like that that stand out among the action that has always elevated these films.

 

I love Spielberg but I've always thought his heart didn't seem to be in Crystal Skull. In interviews at the time he would make the point that this was Lucas' movie. He was just there to give George what he wanted. I always felt that this was a cop out on his part. He was basically saying if you think the film sucks blame George. I was just here to point the camera and shout "Action". Don't get me wrong the film is full of little Spielberg touches but he seemed to wave away the dafter stuff and over use of CGI by saying "Well it's George's movie. I'll do what he wants."

My only memory that stands out even to this day is "Jonesy" oh and some monkey magic. That's not a good sign.

My memory is the weird decision to use a different (much much flatter and lame) take for the "part time" gag in the film than the one that was in the trailer.

 

I remember thinking, "oof! Director really isn't feelin' this"

 

And the great creepy scene in the nuclear test village which was somewhat undone by gophers and the wonky physics on the fridge.

If you zoom in, it looks like there might be black dots on Ford’s face too. Might be - it’s hard to tell, it could just be dirt. Although they look quite symmetrical.

I hope not. I'd much rather they did a film about Indiana Jones that acknowledges and reflects on his age and uses that as one of the themes of the film, rather than some tech-driven attempt to recreate the period when the Indy films were good. They're never going to recapture the lightning-in-a-bottle genius of Raiders, but they might make a decent film with a bit more truth to it if they try and do something a bit different.

 

Obviously, I wouldn't want a film where an aging Jones shuffles around on a zimmer frame looking sad and confused, but I think you could get some dramatic mileage out of him having to move into a sort of Henry Jones mode.
