Mindhunter - Netflix and Fincher

Recommended Posts

Netflix, David Fincher and Charlize Theron are doing a show based on the true crime book Mind Hunter: Inside FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit. Stars Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, Anna Torv and Hannah Gross.

Set in 1979, FBI agents interview serial killers to help solve current murders. Their boss (I'm assuming it is) doesn't seem too pleased with that plan, from the teaser.

Coming in October.

Could Thomas Harris/Michael Mann make a copyright claim on this?

Looking into it, more like the other way around. Co-author of the book it's based on, John Douglas, was a real agent who did this and Jack Crawford from the Harris books is based on him.

The killer there looks pointedly like Ed Kemper.

Edit - seemingly because it is. The book it's based on was written by a bloke who interviewed Kemper amongst a lot of other infamous names. Kemper also famously loves to talk to anyone who listens and has hours of interviews recorded, so would make sense.

What's Finchers level of involvement I wonder? Show-runner? Directors of some episodes?

Getting your name down against the first episode is astonishingly lucrative. You then get residuals for every episode of that show that ever airs, even if you had absolutely nothing to do with it.

I can't remember the link to where I read about it, but there's some good discussion about how much these superstar producers and writers cream off here.

So I'm watching episode 1. There are some really really bad acting involved. There is a bar scene where the protagonist is talking to a lady, and it sounds like they are reading their lines, its just awful. Other than that, it seems promising. I can forgive bad acting as long as the story is decent. Edit: Jesus there are some bad writing in this.

Watched the first two. Really intriguing, although I'm biased as serial killer stuff gets me going. I like the 'His name is Robert Paulson' guy's character most so far.

Oh yes, I forgot he was in Fight Club. He was in Alien 3 too.

Let me add that I love Finchers work, Zodiac in particular and I enjoy slow burns but I'm going to need my arm twisted to go further.

The plot evolves and the dialogues gets better. I was close to quitting as well. I made it to episode 9 last night ^_^

There's an interview with David Fischer in today's FT talking about this and the death of cinema.

Here is the interview with Fincher, if anyone wants to read it :)

Haven't started the show myself, hopefully will watch at least the first episode this weekend.

Until I saw this thread right now, all I knew about this was the name, and that made me think it was a late-80s action-drama about a psychic cop, not unlike the fictional show in the film Mindhorn.

But I guess not! I'll check it out.

This was the most interesting part of the article imo:

'I see Netflix as people who are bold enough and interested enough to build a playground between film and television. And that playground can be a safe haven for adult drama, which has been squeezed out of the multiplex. With Mindhunter, I just wanted something a little bit ruminative. As the guy who sold Paramount and Warner Bros on Zodiac, that’s not something I would do again. I don’t think movie studios have the stomach for it.'

But check your PM :)

Yeah, that was a very interesting read. I also agree with him very much on the state of the movie industry, where there are hardly anyone willing to take any risk.

I thought the first episode was excellent. I'm not seeing the terrible acting mentioned here, how can I be on such a different wavelength? It seems intelligent and thoughtful and well-paced. In particular I liked how Ford was constantly challenged on his points but instead of becoming defensive and exasperated he always had sound reasoning and a place to take the dialogue.

First episode at the bar and I'm out, I've seen better acting in porn, Jesus.

Maybe you watch too much porn? :P
