Yes I could play games when they first launch, I could have played it 12 years ago but that doesn't change the fact that we could be given more notice as to when a game is leaving the service. Gaming is so strange, you can propose a pro consumer idea and people will list reasons as to why you should just accept what the huge multi billion dollar corporation gives you.

Giving the gamepass subscriber a longer notice for when games are leaving the service can only be a good thing for us as paying customers. It certainly won't harm the subscriber.

It's definitely not defensible from a consumer first perspective. I'm not sure I agree it's unique to gaming and often it's not defense but resignation and reality (how well capitalism really serves its consumers... Be just good enough to get people to pay).

At the same time people also seem surprised when companies don't do this stuff as if they do anything that isn't in the business' direct interest (even if that's not what they want but have to to one-up the competition). And whilst it could be seen as defending them it can be worth pointing out the organisation's line of reasoning at least to help people understand how to think these things though for themselves.

Ideally of course every game would constantly list its current removal date (based on the contract in place). Why restrict me to only knowing the next three months of removals? I should be able to sort the whole collection by date they're leaving.

My GPU is running out in February and I've thought about not renewing my sub as I don't like having a big list of games hanging over me that I feel like I need to play in a certain time; I'd rather have far fewer games that I've bought and want to get around to as and when.

Really, though, it's just such good value that I can't give it up. If MS push the price up in the future, however, or the cheap workarounds no longer work, it may be enough to stop me resubbing.

Yeah I’m knocking my sub on the head when it runs out end of year. Feels like I’ve borrowed a load of games from a mate and I should get through them before playing or buying my own, so my personal tastes keep getting pushed to the back of the queue.

It’s amazing value though and I’ll probably dip back in for the big releases. It’s just the way my brain works.

Aye. The other thing, of course, is Xbox Cloud Gaming, which I've been using on my Deck a lot recently, so that's another reason to keep it. They've got me good!

To me Game Pass is having access to all of Microsoft's games with the rest of the offering a lovely bonus.

Of course it has the side effect where if I really like a game, I end up getting the Switch version...

This has finally explained my own feelings to me! That's exactly how I feel. To me it's an obligation to make good value of gamepass rather than just enjoy the games I want to enjoy when I want to enjoy them.

Weird I don't feel this way about Netflix etc.

I'm sure we've had this conversation before, but I definitely place less value on a Game Pass game that I get for 'free' compared with one I've paid money for. If a GP game doesn't grab me in the first hour, or even less, then it's getting uninstalled, whereas with a game I've bought, especially a digital one that I can't sell on, I'm much more inclined to play it for longer and get my money's worth.

This.

Regardless of the cost of a game if it's not fun in about 30 minutes I'm not persevering. And if at any point whilst playing it I'm not having fun for a short period I'm also done. If I don't feel like picking it up for another session I'll just never turn it on again and be happy.

I was reading a column in Wireframe just an hour ago about Deus Ex: Human Revolution and the writer saying how they and they postulate, many others, just stopped playing at some point. She suggested maybe games back then were too bloated, too similar or just not interesting enough to hold interest....

And all I could think was that nothing at all had changed. At least for me. I suspect I've finished only 5-10% of games I've ever played.

I feel a need to play a Fallout-style game, the the point where I installed FO4 with the intention of playing it over again.  However it basically does not work, the opening sequence in the house does not progress unless I continually press the pause button, then the characters talk briefly moving the game on, but moments later I need to pause it agian.  Rinse and repeat.  I did so until they all ran to the top of the vault, but the game would not progress beyond that point as there was no way of triggering the vault opening.  Did this with two brand new games.

I then installed Elder Scrolls online (as I adore Skyrim), is that any good?  I am only interested in playing solo.  It feels different to Skyrim after about 30 mins of play.

If thats no good, any other recommendations for this sort of game (not inc the Fallout games, or Far Cry)?

Elder Scrolls Online is really good, a bit janky compared to the single-player games but there is mountains of solo content in there and some really good questing to be found. It's incredibly open-ended too as everything scales to your level so you can basically go anywhere in the world and just start exploring.

They've kind of screwed up the new player experience over the years though, you used to be led quite nicely through the main quest but now with half a dozen expansions you kind of get dragged all over the place from the very start. I'd recommend looking up a guide to playing ESO "in order" at least to get your bearings and point you in the direction of the original main quest.

If you haven't already played it, The Outer World could be the right game for you. It's done by Obsidian (who also made FO: New Vegas) and it's pretty much a Fallout game without the Pip boy, the Vaults and the other staples we know from that franchise. Other than that it plays and feels like a Fallout game and it does have some really good and memorable missions.

It's the single reason why I have had Gamepass for about a year and have only played a couple of games. Every game is caught in a limbo state of being on the list to play later, as there's no urgency to start playing it now, and there being no point in starting it because I won't be able to complete it before it leaves. The normal cycle is that I add it to my play later list, and then delete it unplayed when it's announced that it's being removed. I just don't think subscription services are for me.

I'm much the same, and end up playing a limited selection of Microsoft and EA games that will never leave. If I hadn't paid £90 for 3 years I would have dropped it long ago. I share it with both of the youngsters in the house and they've barely touched it either, outside of Minecraft Dungeons.

Having just completed Half-Life 2, with a game save spanning 6 years, the subscription model is really not for me. It is undoubtedly a fantastic service though, and for someone new to games, unbeatable value.

To offer a counter point I'm far from someone new to games but I do have very little spare cash to spend on them nowadays. Game Pass for me is amazing and every month offers incredible value.

I'd be happy just paying the month to month fee tbh. On the "conversion" deal though its completely insane value for money!

Yep! I’m having a lovely time with it so far.

It's a game I have enjoyed in bits but ultimately got bogged down by the huge open world collectathon element that drags all Ubi games down. It all feels a bit samey after a while as well.

I did the Turkish gift voucher thing and also got a year of Gamepass with a broadband upgrade.  It's undeniably great value even at the full UK price, but I find I just don't use it enough.  I think it's because games are generally time consuming, and the Netflix style subscription doesn't work as well when each piece of content takes time to get into, understand, enjoy and complete.  I play Flight Sim, I dip in and out. It's not a game I'd have bought, but nice to have. But while you're playing that game, it's obvious that all the other games are of no value to me.  I can't play 2 games at once. I could sit and watch 2 or three movies on Netflix tonight back to back, but on Gamepass it's weird to play a game for 10 minutes trying to decide whether I like it or not.  I'm getting my £3 a months worth (Turkish pricing). But at £10 a month I feel it offers less value than Netflix because gaming isn't consumed in that Netflix All You Can Eat way.  I already have a pile of bought and unplayed (or barely started) games. Gamepass adds to that.

So many games, so little time, with or without Gamepass.  I just picked up Bloodstained for Xbox for cheap at Game and now I'm playing that through for the second time, I have no time for Gamepass until I complete this.

To be honest all these relative value of Gamepass conversations seem largely irrelevant when for the sake of 5-10 mins a day you can get it for free using the crazily generous reward point scheme.  I've been stacked at 3 years subs for over a year now - I earn points faster than it will expire.

I do actually get a reasonable amount of use from it as the kids use it extensively on the Series S (to the extent that I own no games for the Series S aside from what's on Gamepass and has been given away on GWG due to the digital thing), and I've played through a reasonable number of games on PC.

But even if my use was more erratic - to have all these things available for next to nothing makes it a no brainer for me given you get day one on all first party and so much more...

Binned off Midnight Fight Express and went back to the leisurely clicking of Two Point Campus (although hit a bug that is stopping progress in one level)

MFE just didn’t quite feel intuitive enough for me to want to sink too much time into it. Not a frequent player of beat-em-ups though, so others may like it more, or at least have more patience with it.

Finished As Dusk Falls tonight and, man, that ending was abrupt, wasn't it? It both left things unresolved but at the same time tied some things off too easily.

Of course, there were quite a lot of different branches and it was very good at displaying these for you at the end of each chapter, easily the best implementation I've ever seen, by far and therefore allowing you to try different options. I can't say that I particularly enjoyed the actual story - or at least, my path through the game wasn't very good. I really didn't like the art direction they went with either. The worst thing was that the ending is pure sequel bait, but using a plot strand that I'm not even sure gets anything more than a single-scene mention (and doesn't actually make any sense if you spend more than a few seconds thinking about it).

A bit of a dud overall, which was a shame, as it did choice better than so many of these games but just didn't deliver with the narrative.
