Xbox Game Pass - GUIDE TO BEST DEAL IN FIRST POST

What a mess this is. It has PC keyboard prompts for the tutorial bits, the cliff climbing isn’t actually climbing (you just jump) and the AI of animals and monsters can’t have been added yet, everything just wanders around aimlessly.

This is actually fun

So sick of seeing games that look that they might be worth a play and running into the dreaded word 'rouguelike'. Seems like every other bloody release is one lately.

Hades is a jewel in a sea of medicority in the genre.

Check out this new game: "A fantasy roguelike metroidvania with crafting and base building, play solo or with a group of up to 4 friends". 95% of all indie games right now.

It's a cycle, innit. Like when everything was a brown fps during the 360/PS3 era. I dig roguelike dungeon crawler nonsense so I'm in my element :D

I'm a fan too but it's getting a little too much for me now. I'm sure that there are loads of alternatives out there, i'm just not noticing them in the same way.

It's going to get worse, too, there's bound to be a wave of Hades-alikes on the way that are just as dull and ugly as all the other roguelikes but now with shitloads of text boxes and plot.

(Hades is superb, don't get me wrong, but if there was ever a game that everyone is going to copy without understanding what makes it great, it's this one).

Imagine being a fan of Roguelikes in the 90s and having a handful of ultra old school ASCII Roguelikes and their varients, Diablo in hardcore mode and maybe the occasional localised Mystery Dungeon game.

And that was your lot for an entire decade.

And you would imagine, while playing Moria on your Atari ST or whatever, what if there was an arcade Roguelike? What if there was a party based one? What if there was some crazy shit I can't even imagine, like a... a... a card game Roguelike!?

Now imagine being a fan of Roguelikes now and having literally everything.

Again: Let people enjoy the things they like and play the things you like instead of moaning.

As someone who has never played a rogue like is there a good starting point on gamepass that will introduce the genre to a newcomer?

I know that Hades has a towering reputation but is it a good starting point?

Also is Ori and the blind forest a good entry for the metro Anita genre?

Hades is just good full stop, I’d recommend that and Dead Cells in that genre, but Hades especially just because everything about it is so polished and it’s a gorgeous looking game.

And yes to Ori, a lot of people will point you towards Hollow Knight but personally I enjoyed Ori more and its sequel, and it’s a bit more forgiving, but Hollow Knight is also worth your time.

Was thinking of giving one of the CRPGs a go. Is Wasteland 3 the best of those available on game pass and should I play it with permadeath?

It's one of the best, yes. Alongside Pillars of Eternity 2 (not 1!!). Pick which setting you prefer the most.

No permadeath unless you're a very expensive crpg player and crave a mighty challenge.

Thanks for the advice. I’ve only dabbled with them really so am probably still a novice really. I had read about PoE II being good as well. I’ve read lots of positive things about Wasteland 2, 3, PoE and Desperados. Hard to know which one to go for. If only I could be young again with time to play them all.

Desperados 3 is an XCOM-like but with stealth strategy game. Not a cRPG.

You can skip Wasteland 2 and PoE 1, both decent and okay, but flawed. Play those if you're after more cRPG and already finished the others.

PoE2 and Wasteland 3 are both absolutely brilliant though, so start with one if those.

Divinity Original Sin 2 is also absolutely brilliant but not a gamepass iirc

Okay guys, I’m being exceptionally lazy and am asking the rllmuk hive mind to answer a question instead of drunkenly trying to figure it out myself…

I’ve not owned an Xbox since the 360. I am firmly in the PlayStation ecosystem. A friend told me at the pub that I can sign up for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for more than a year, using some cheap trick as I’m new to it, and stream Xbox games to my iPad. We”d also be able to play together and use voice chat. Is he chatting bollocks?

Also, if so, how?

I’m currently playing through Wasteland 3 for the second time, also picked up the DLC which is well worth it IMO. Such a great game and a fantastic soundtrack.

One of the things I hadn’t appreciated about game pass is the opportunity to re-visit old gems. But now polished into 4K loveliness. I thought it was just a gimmick but find myself playing some really special games again.

I’ve said it before but if you’ve not played and completed titanfall 2 please give it a go. Stunning. Possibly best shooter ever made this side of halo.
