Why are we not talking about Microsoft Solitaire Collection being on Game Pass? And now that the mobile version is AD FUCKING FREE, BABY!

Wait, is it ad-free in general or does the GPU perk extend to the mobile version? I spend so much time on it I pay for it to be ad-free on Android.

Edit

Aw yeah! All the other Microsoft casual games next, please :)

I really hate that this game is being shat on despite actually caring enough to insert a content warning before you even start the game. How many other games bother? Fuck sake.

I had a good time with it and look forward to whatever the studio puts out next.

Certain sections of Twitter are particularly bad for people not understanding that a character who is supposed to be a bad guy is... supposed to be a bad guy.

I get the impression it's the people who used to be on Tumblr, and that game is likely to draw in a lot of those people.

The mum thing is just confusing to me though. I've never met my dad, no idea if he's even alive, and also am not one, but I can play Sony's endless dad games just fine as well as all the games where you have some sort of father figure.

And again with the Mum thing, the game gives people the option to turn off messages from Mum. One of the first things it asks you. Just wild what this is getting criticised for.

I mean, I have a pretty crappy relationship with my dad, but it's not a traumatic one, so I don't really get bothered by games/media which glorify parents, beyond finding it a bit saccharine at times. Ditto, evidently, your lack of relationship with yours. But it's not hard to imagine if you've had an actually abusive relationship with your mum (or, on the other side of things, have recently lost them), where thinking of them draws you back to traumatic experiences that significantly impact on your mental wellbeing, then having a game constantly have your in-game mum messaging you* might be triggering.**

I have friends for whom the blanket mother's/father's day advertising means a solid few weeks of intrusive thoughts because of that, and for them having a game which features a supporting, super-positive mum-figure but allows you to turn that feature off is a super-cool thing. Obviously if that character were an integral part of the story the game wanted to tell then it would be different (per, e.g., the game needing its stalker character as a core part of its storyline), but as it's peripheral to the experience making it optional makes perfect sense.

* her messages really are quite incessant in the game. I half-regretted not turning her off as it felt a bit too constant at times!

** in the proper sense of that term.

I'm desperately lucky to have mostly avoided dealing with significant grief, so I'm not sure how I'd react to certain triggers. Really don't see the harm in having them though. If they're not for you, click and move on? Perhaps this was how accessibility options were initially treated by Folks With Opinions on Twitter, Etc.

I'll add the game to my play later to have a go after Hades, assuming the devs get more out of the GP deal by way of more folks playing it.

I've had certain extremely traumatic events in my life that never fail to trigger me, all related to health issues. But I deal with that and certainly don't get angry at tv shows, books, or games or whatever for including specific hospital scenes because they should consider that for some people it brings up painful memories. That's just absurd. I don't expect a warning either. Those people are fucking batshit.

Remember how in the 80s/90s you'd hear stories about actora who portrayed baddiesin popular soap operas having to deal with the occasional nutcase who was angry at them for what their character did in the show? Well, those nutcases nowadays have Twitter.

I want to play the game now because I want to understand what all the fuss is about. I saw the trailer for it in the last Nintendo Direct and it didn't look like my cup of tea at all but the discussion it's generating seems interesting.

Well, if I had any say in the matter, I'd throw money at mental health support.

Yes. That's the solution rather than avoiding every single possible trigger in stories because then you literally couldn't write a story.

Apologies if my use of the word nutcase was inappropriate btw

Yeah, I appreciate that. I wouldn't advocate for avoiding topics in stories, although I could envisage myself avoiding certain games/films/etc.

We have physical health warnings on games (e.g., sensitivity to strobe lighting) that I don't think anyone (now?) complains about, and we now fairly regularly have accessibility options front and center. Couldn't hurt to make this natural progression for mental health, even if it's a warning up front that most people thoughtlessly skip.

Grounded has the option to turn off spiders being rendered for those affected by the phobia. It's all good stuff.

I'm also hoping Humankind is the first Amplitude title I don't bounce off, 'cos I really want to like their games more than I do.

I tried Humankind. I think might have bounced off it already. Feels like I'm being unfair on it for not being Civ, but it feels obtuse from the off.  There's a mantra to Civ design, which it doesn't always achieve, where you're making interesting decisions every turm. With Humankind, I've no idea what I'm deciding.

Maybe I should watch the tutorials...

I started up Humankind and chose the middle tutorial option because while I've played a lot of Civ I wouldn't call myself even close to expert but I'm definitely not a beginner. I started the tutorial, it popped some gibberish in the corner and left me to it. I then realised I should probably have told it I've never played one of these games before and backed out. Then I was unable to trigger the same choice again and the only tutorial options were videos. So I turned it off and deleted it.

Thank Christ I decided to try Hades first.

My Mum died very suddenly a little over a month ago. Even the notion would have upset me.

I'm so sorry to hear that, tnman. This must be an awful time - I hope you have friends and family who are helping you through it.

Hello,

quick request for help if possible…

My gamer tag is the primary account associated with Game Pass. My sons gamer tag then has access to all the games I download.

If I was to buy the streets of rage DLC on my account would he have access to that too?

Cheers,

Indy
