Yep, select. Also you can change the number of laps too! I somehow missed that!

Are you definitely talking bout the PS2 version? How on earth do I get to options menu, I boot up and I get one screen with either champ or practice mode. Can't see any other option??

On the title, don't press start. Press select. Before it takes you to the championship/practice bit.

Just found this online, very impressive https://archive.org/details/srally1_portable

EDIT: and thanks @Popo Here's Sega Rally 2 https://archive.org/details/segarally2_portable

Further EDIT:  And here's Daytona!  https://archive.org/details/SEGA_PC_Daytona_USA_Deluxe_Win95_1999_Eng

(Be aware of the post on the download page that explains why your virus checker will not like it. I had to copy it into a folder I'd listed on Windows Security as an exception.  I've played it tonight for half an hour and as far as I can see it is not a virus)

Oddly enough, I stumbled upon that a week or so ago. Not tried it yet. Does it work well?

i was hoping that maybe someone would have done a hd texture pack or something for it.

Well, it's got the original and the Direct 3D version, running under a voodoo patch or something.  The original works fine but it shows its age.  For me, the D3D version looks great but the game runs too fast and I'm going to experiment with the voodoo settings tomorrow.

Bump!

So today I learned that the un-emulatable Sega Rally 95 disk for PS2 (came bundled with SR2006) can be emulated at 60fps, in full colour using the PCSX2 emulator. This is doable even on the alpha-unfinished Xbox Series version of the emulator.

Previously, any attempts to play this were in black and white.

If you start the game loading and immediately hold Triangle and X, you get a hidden menu* allowing you to turn on Progressive Scan.  Do this and the game runs perfectly on Xbox. Also, by activating that option you can also find more video scaling options on the usual menu (select button on title screen).

some say it helps to switch the emulator renderer to Software mid-game (instead of direct X) . This worked on PC and Xbox for me.  Worth a try.

If you're interested in running emulators on your retail, unmodded Xbox, check out the thread in Retro.

*Pressing Triangle and X at the same time - keep in mind that X on a PS2 is A on am Xbox.  So on an Xbox you're pressing Y and A.

I'm pretty sure I may have had a HD texture pack for Sega Rally at some point. Although it may have been for the Model 2 version. I shall have to go turn on an old PC see if its still there.

Wondering if anyone has tried emulating it on Steam Deck?  I've got PCSX2, and you do have to switch it to software renderer to make it work at all, but then you can't fiddle with resolution, and by default it's all stretched out to fit into the widescreen of the Deck, which isn't very pleasing.

Sound emulation is awful, but I'm not very knowledgable or confident in changing PCSX2 settings - anything I have tried hasn't made a difference.

Cross-posting this with the arcade racers topic in General, but I think I might have had a slight mis-read of the emulation, based on the below factors:

  • The Saturn version has enhanced audio, with re-recorded tracks and voices - this might have been contributing to my feeling that audio emulation was 'bad'
  • You have to run it in software rendering mode, otherwise it's just black and white - this puts a bit of a strain on the CPU, and means the game does slow down at times, causing warping of the audio
  • There's a hidden config menu* (accessed by pressing select rather than start at the title screen) which lets you modify some settings, including audio - by default the sound effects are way louder than the music, and the car engines sound highly distorted this way - I do think this is a problem caused by emulation and the original game is not like this, but by changing the balance by turning down sound effects and turning up the music (and why would you not want to do that anyway?) it massively mitigates the problem
  • You can also increase the resolution, which makes it a better fit for the Deck screen, and reduces the stretching somewhat

So while I do think audio emulation is a bit off on the Deck version of PCSX2, it's not the out-and-out disaster I initially thought.  I've seen videos of PCSX2 running on Xbox, and these issues aren't present.

Have I done something wrong? I changed the track length to ‘long’ but it remains 1 lap per course, not the expected 3. Putting it to ‘longest’ ramps it way up to 5 laps. Weird.

Edit - putting the difficulty down to easiest, and I can complete a run before the timer runs down.

Still can’t complete Lakeside though…

Re: audio - remember, this is the arcade version - from memory it performs the same as it did on original PS2 hardware. Having just got my Saturn set up again recently, I noticed that the voice samples sounded a bit muffled compared to the PS2 port. I might look into replacing the redbook audio  for the music from the Saturn version.

The slowdown is also present on my Series S and PC too.

Just been through Towyn this afternoon while visiting home and that’s now 3 arcades I know of in that area with Sega Rally machines.

I’ve played 2/3 of them. 1 very good, 1 Shite, might have to try the third even though my money is wasted trying to play that game because I’m bad at it.

The engine sound effects are very distorted and crackly playing on the Deck version of PCSX2, but this might be down to an issue with the default configuration rather than the emulator.

I've been playing a bit of pcsx2 sega rally. It works pretty well , Shame it's limited to software mode, jitters a bit and I'm on a Ryzen 5 3600.

I just can't be arsed digging out my PS2 to play it. Also no matter what I do I can't make that look good through an ossc.

Anyway PS2 is a good way to play it. I've only tried the Saturn version through retro arch though.

If sega did a kinda of compilation of Daytona , sega rally and a few others I'd buy it. Surprised they haven't. Some sort of best of Naomi and model 1 2 3 would be great :)

I'll hijack my own thread here: what's the best way to play sega rally 2 via emulation?

Redream seems alright for the Dreamcast but the dc version has a choppy frame rate.

I've tried super model for emulating the arcade version it works but I can't work out how to set up the controls.

Sega Model 3 UI is your friend here - you'll need to go through a whole process of setting up test/service buttons and controls for all the different genres it supports but you can skip the ones you don't care for.

Eventually got it all working thanks , this guy had a config setup for 360 pads: https://trackertd.wordpress.com/2017/05/19/sega-model-3-emulation-for-dummies-a-quick-guide/

Anyway, I spent a bit of time in both the dc and arcade versions of sega rally 2. The arcade version is definitely better. But not by a huge amount. It's mainly because it's brighter and the textures are higher res. I've read the pc version has same problem of dark picture.

I could be wrong but I actually think sega rally 1 is better than 2. It's just more fun to drive.

I've now decided I want to play sega rally 2006, it looks like one of those games that got a bad rep at the time but is actually pretty good.

Is that Sega Rally 3? You’ll want Teknoparrot for that. It runs really well on a half decent pc.

2006 is the Japan only PS2 game that came in a set with the emulated original arcade game. It doesn’t really have the Sega Rally “feel”, but it’s a decent enough game.

Yeah - I bought 2006 purely because it came with Sega Rally Championship.

This something I really want to try, that's basically the arcade port Revo isn't it?

Sega Rally 3 on Teknoparrot is the simplified arcade version - you can get the actual PC version on ebay for a couple of quid and it's fantastic.

Yeah I have it on the 360, it's one of my favourite driving games. But it's a pain to dig out the console to play it. Running in pc under my telly makes sense. Thing is I really like short quick blasts on games these days, arcade games are perfect if you have no time due to kids etc.

I've noticed the pc version is on some so called abandonware sites. But afraid to run it due to viruses etc!

There's something different in the PC verison. I never really understood what it was but the PC version seems a tad easier, and more enjoyable than the console ones.  It feels more controllable on PC somehow.  People complain that the PC frame pacing is flawed but I never noticed.
