Sega Rally Championship! [car starts noise]

After wasting loads of time fiddling around with it, I gave up trying to get the Model 2 emulator working properly with a 360 controller. Even after I got it somewhat working it was still basically unplayable due to deadzone issues. That may have been me being thick, but it might be something to bear in mind before going down that road. The Saturn emulator on Retroarch (one of the Mednafen ones I think?) ended up being the better option for me, but obviously that involves setting up Retroarch which can be massively fiddly in itself.

The M2-produced PS2 port is the finest way to play Sega Rally outside of owning an original arcade cabinet.

I cut my teeth on the Saturn port back in the day and ended up mastering and loving every moment of it, but when I very belatedly got around to obtaining the PS2 bonus disc version these are the main reasons it blew my mind:

1. Far superior visuals. It's truly arcade perfect for all intents and purposes. The significance of this cannot be understated.

2. Far superior audio. I realise that preferences for the Saturn's flashy live band arranged versions of the original chip generated tracks and rerecorded voice tracks will be subjective, but for me the real arcade BGMs are harder, funkier, mixed better, tighter and just enhance the game immensely. I refuse to play this game at low volumes.

3. Far superior control. Yes the Saturn version has excellent control and yes the PS2 version could be described as being twitchy in comparison - but regardless of that in my eyes (hands) it's still much better than the Saturn port(s).

Where the Saturn port shines is obviously in its extra content (the Stratos, 2-player head to head time trials etc), its affordability and the fact that it's an impressively polished alternative home console take on one of the finest video games ever created - but its many bells and whistles don't have a hope of papering over the fact that compared to the port produced by M2 (I stress this again because - like the quality of the visuals - the significance of this too cannot be overstated) the Saturn version is compromised as fuck.

I've been so spoiled. I never thought I'd ever find the once incredible and very bloody playable Saturn port, well, actually unplayable but, here I am, perfectly at peace with knowing I'll probably never boot it up again.

I think you'll need a Japanese PS2 or a modchip. Either are a worthy investment.

You could get a McBoot Memory card cheap enough from eBay and play the import version that way?

I'd never heard of this before. With an rgb lead will ntsc games run at 60hz on my ps2?

I think so - it's a long time since I did it.  I bought an Action Replay and made the McBoot myself.  It was easy, and I bought the Japanese Sega Rally off a wise old man in a field and absolutely did not download it from a rom site quickly and easily.  (Besides, there was something you needed to do involving a patch before you could burn it to a disk which I assumed wouldn't be quick and painless and easy to do by simply googling it, so I bought an import version from the wise old man.)

But Sega Rally worked great on my PS2, but I have a S-Video cable.  The other cable I have is one of those horrible scart block things that adapts a composite.  Fully wired rgb cables should be fine though and also cheap on ebay.

PS2 emulation poor? Oh please. Had it setup at a recent gaming event with my GT Force wheel and it was amazing.

The black border is there because it defaults to a lower resolution, a quick visit to the options sorts that.

What!? There's an option to change the res? I didn't know this.

I just reread my long winded post in here about how the amazing PS2 port rendered the Saturn version obsolete.

What a dickhead.

I lost a couple of hours on the Saturn version (well, the JPN "Plus" reissue out of curiousity) the other day trying to unlock the Stratos because it's still bloody brilliant.

How do you find the ‘plus’ version compares to the Japanese original?

I can only compare it to memories of playing the original PAL release (which I haven't booted up in many years), so not particularly scientifically, unfortunately.

I kept the handling settings at default but with three laps per course (how I used to have the PAL one)..but the only meaningful difference I felt was that it was harder to catch up with opponent cars and and that grazing the sides of the tracks seemed more punishing to car speed. However I couldn't really say if this was more due to the game having been tweaked or me being super-rusty with my skills. Probably the latter.

I have the plus version. It's got bug fixes, online (which obvs doesn't work) and analogue pad support.

It's a slightly better re-release.

It's nothing like the complete rework of the 2nd version of Daytona.
