Dear White People

Welp this is upsetting a lod of people.

I'm sure we're going to see a lot of articles like this

Netflix debuted the teaser trailer for their original series Dear White People earlier today and wouldn’t you know it, some very predictable people weren’t pleased! A summation of the 34-second teaser might be “blackface is bad!” which most sane, compassionate individuals would agree with. But if the internet were populated only by the sane and compassionate, we’d never have hashtags like #BoycottNetflix.

The gist of online umbrage around Dear White People is that it’s being perceived by some extremely thin-skinned people as “anti-white.” Strangely there were no calls to boycott theaters when the movie this series is based on—also called Dear White People—debuted in 2014, or when the deal between Lionsgate and Netflix was announced last year.

I know this should be general practice anyway, but do not read the comments section on Youtube. It's just flat out depressing.

Not sure what to expect from this as I never heard of the movie but I'll give it a shot, if only to boost the numbers of a show which is upsetting all the right people. I mean to claim that it promotes white genocide is just hilarious.

*Runs off to Breitbart to see if they've written a frothing at the mouth article about it yet*

As much as these racists are cunts, I can't say I'm particularly looking forward to a show that explicitly exists to lecture me.

I don't think it exists for that purpose at all. Unless you got an email from the show runner saying "this is for you explicitly fucker!"

I'm assuming you don't do black face do you?

The movie is great, it's not lecturing at all. It's a witty, mannered comedy with a cheeky title, think Whit Stillman trying to direct a Spike Lee joint.

Also it has Tessa Thompson in it, who is totes crushable.

This show is from the same director as the film - there is no way in hell this will be anything like the show people are inventing in their minds. It'll be great, these alt-right idiots are out of their gourds.

The trailer for the film seems pretty decent, is it a good watch? I don't really like heavy handed messages but this film seems to encompass many different views, and seems pretty relevant.

"Imagine if this was called DEAR BLACK PEOPLE! #blacksplaining"

I'm pretty sure they say this in the trailer for the 2014 movie?

I suppose if one were to watch JUST the Netflix trailer and not realise any context, it could seem somewhat racist, as all the points and facts in the Netflix trailer seem to play off like "look at these posh scummy racist white people", where the movie (written by the same dude) trailer expands on that and seems more obviously tongue-in-cheek.

I'm pretty sure this is the most triggering video on YouTube right now.

I don't know. I haven't seen the film, but I've watched about 7 episodes so far, and I've been pleasantly surprised. It is topical, amusing, challenging and way better than most of the other Netflix shows we've tried to watch recently. Despite not getting every single reference, I'm enjoying it. It is great to see a diverse cast of black characters, each with their own perspective, rather than a white cast with a token black character or two who are supposed to represent the entire homogeneous experience of a fifth of the world population. And, for me (as a fairly ignorant but progressive white person) it has been quite eye opening to see a show that talks about the many different issues that affect people of colour on an American college campus. I like the way it picks a character whose story to follow through each episode, giving different views on the same events, whilst also moving the plot along.

Has anyone else watched it?

I've now watched all of the first series, and I think it was really well done. Best new show I've watched in ages. I hope they produce another series. I'm going to try and track down the film.

Is this one of those shows where it follows on from the movie, or is it an extended retelling of the same story?

Just finished watching this and thought it was pretty good. Despite the provocative title, it isn't a heavy handed lecture and often strays into comedy while making its points on modern racial issues. I suppose it's part of its satire that it all takes place in the bubble of a privileged university, too.

I actually watched the movie right before the TV series. The film is worth watching as well. It's very stylish with a slightly different tone to the series but definitely watchable. Going straight to the TV show is pretty jarring, though, as the cinematics are toned down somewhat and all but two of the main characters are replaced by other actors. Despite that, I think it helps a lot to watch it first. The show is a follow-up to events in the movie, although it changes a few things around for whatever reason.
