Castlevania - What is Netflix? A miserable pile of streaming!

Well this is a bit out of nowhere.

There aren’t any dang details about it but, at some point this year, we’ll get the chance to watch somebody from Castlevania’s Belmont family fighting bloodsuckers.

Netflix has been holding an event today where it’s announcing the bulk of its upcoming programming slate. Nestled in the press release was this:

Castlevania Season 1, Part 1 Coming to Netflix in 2017

This is literally all we know for sure at the moment, but the project is likely the same one that’s been reported as being in development from Frederator Networks (Adventure Time) and producer Adi Shankar, who was behind that gritty Power Rangers short back in 2015. On an episode of the Nick Animation podcast late last year, Seibert said that Frederator was ramping up on an unnamed video game project. His words, as per Slashfilm transcription:

We have a project right now that we’re doing that needs to go unnamed, based on one of the most world-famous video games of the last 30 years, that we’ve had in our shop for 12 years without being able to get it started. But there were great characters and a great story, and eventually we got it going.

Prior to that, Shankar had said he’d be doing work on a Castlevania series with Seibert.

So, signs seem to point that the Netflix show is this Seibert/Shankar collaboration. An article up on The Globe and Mail reports that Warren Ellis has done the writing for the show’s first season. We’ll have to wait for more official details to be 100% sure and will update if they come through.

It'll probably aim for a dull Lords of Shadow tone. As much as I'd like to see actors being punted off stairs by wobbling Medusa heads.

Before the netflix announcement, Shankar specifically said the project would be an ultraviolent adaptation of Castlevania III, which is a good sign.

Just finished watching it. I really enjoyed it but Wtf. It ends abruptly with no conclusion. I hope it gets another series.

Anyone know what the plans for it are?

Watched this earlier. It's very odd. Reminded me of a grindhouse version of the Hugh Jackman Van Helsing. Visually it's fine; albeit pretty generic anime style. But the dialogue is full of riduculous swearing - House of the Dead Overkill levels. Makes it tough to take seriously at times. Worth watching though, especially as the 'season' is only 4 episodes long. Worth it just for Trevor Belmont saying 'Will you leave my testicles alone' during a bar fight anyway.

2 eps in. I really want to like this but the dialogue and VA is shit-tier. The accents are all over the place. The actors cast in smaller roles think they're in Victoria Wood's Dinner-ladies.

The inn scene is terrible, what the fuck is this background music when the action picks up? And the awful kicked in the knackers joke.

Dracula's relationship was rushed/mishandled in two brief scenes. Not entirely sure why Dracula told everyone they had one year, it wasn't a very effective way of dramatising his revenge even if it was faithful to the game. Seemed to serve no purpose.

With Trevor Belmont it's like Warren Ellis is trying to write Game of Thrones fan fiction.

Will stick with it but it'a a very bumpy start. The humour doesn't work at all.

And Trevor Belmont looks like Squall.

Episodes 3 & 4 were better. I enjoyed it overall. Glad it's been renewed. I hope they improve the dialogue for S2.

The structure of it definitely makes me think it was a film that got cut up into episodes for some reason.

Dracula does tell Alucard that it'll take a year to raise his army. That whole aspect felt very Van Helsing though. It was good but just some very odd tonal issues. No idea what the goat fucking was doing in it.

Very enjoyable. Like GI Joe before it, if Warren Ellis' name is attached to it it's bound to be good.

Off to play Symphony of the Night on Vita.

It was okay. It felt very much like second rate Anime boosted up by the history of the title.

It did make me pine for a series of Vampire Hunter D though!
