Destiny 2: Lightfall

I was doing the part early on in the new campaign last night where you have to collect the particles from the nighmares. I was 2 power below the recommended and everything was just murdering me. The ogres in particular. I couldn't even corpse rush them because by the time I got back they'd always despawned. It seemed like there were supposed to be other players in the area but they'd spawn in and then immediately vanish.

Dunno what I'm doing wrong but I couldn't kill the grunts fast enough before the ogres melted me in seconds.

Also what the fuck bungie? "Everyone gets a boost to 750! Play any content you like*" (Except the new one. We made that need more power for no real reason). I had the same issue with Warmind. I ended up having to grind for gear when what I wanted to do was play the new story. And yes. I'm sure that there's some of you who could face roll the content at -5 power.

I ended up doing a couple of strikes instead and even that gave me the same one twice in a row. Didn't feel great to be honest. I hope the new campaign gets better because the first couple of missions are pretty rubbish.

Trading in your tokens to vendors in the tower gives pretty quick jumps in level. I got to mid 800 fairly quickly (I didn’t have lots stored up).

Agree with the thoughts on lack of content so far. I love the moon having only been a light D1 player but one of my first quests has me doing the same lost sectors on EDZ just with nightmares in them. Hopefully they are drop feeding new content a bit.

The 760 level requirement for the expansion was annoying, but it was much quicker to get there than it was for Warmind, for me at least. It was kind of useful as a way to re-familiarise myself with the game.

I'm looking forward to getting properly stuck in.

I haven't delved too much in to "Armour 2.0" and there seems to be more to the new mods system and giving your stuff energy, but have they really added that many stats to each piece now?

Each single item piece has six different stats, and of course each drop differs in these numbers minutely.

Just seems like pointless unnecessary stats to make a system seem like it has more depth, when really it just has more numbers on screen.

So, I've been having a quick play in this and....I have absolutely no idea what I'm suppossed to be doing. A brief opening single player shooting bit then dumped at 'The Farm' with not really much instruction as to what to do next.

The campaign objectives in this game are as clear as mud,TBH. It really is a multiplayer co-operative shooter and not much else.

Reading some of the posts in here shows what an overwhelming eco-system it is to learn, it's all a completely different language to me.

Seeing as you've apparently played a single mission, it's probably worth playing a bit more before deciding on how good a solo experience it is. ;)

It's been a while, but at this point I think you'd just meant to chat to the NPCs at the farm. You'll be introduced to some vendors, and your next mission. Basically just check out any NPC with an icon over their heads. There's also a Quests tab in the touchpad menu which might be useful.

There's probably a lot to take in when you're just starting, but you'll soon get into the swing of things.

Yup. I got fed up getting murdered in the campaign and did a couple of Strikes. The second one gave me four legendary armour upgrades so that's certainly a viable way to grind up the gear a bit before I go back to the plot.

Yeah, fair point. I am being a bit of an impatient bugger but thesedays a game has to hook me into it in the first couple of hours...or it never will.

While not strictly true, Bungie could make it easier. Personally I still feel Destiny 1's setup for storytelling is far better than in this sequel. But hey, the original Destiny is one of the greatest games of all time...

This is my post from May:

Even though I'm not new to Destiny 2, it feels totally overwhelming once again. Would have hoped for some sort of easier entry this time.

I’m doing the Shadowkeep story and although Eris has give me a cloak and some boots, they show on her inventory under ‘abandoned quests’ and say I need to do the ‘beyond’ mission. Any idea what that’s about?

Its just UI bugs

Later you can repurchase from her - no idea why it’s put them under

Got home from work early, strike play list and got the dreaded ‘co tasting destiny servers message’ booted out and back to the servers at capacity message :(

This is worse than the Anthem launch :lol:

Nah.

Though by spooky coincidence, both those games are now running version 1.41. I think the .41's been better spent on one than the other.

It all does seem a bit uninspired and by-the-numbers so far, mind. I'm not too far along though, and I guess the real meat will be in the 3-player dungeon thing and the raid, and I hope some extra quests stuff that pops up later. I do miss the more, er, 'cinematic' campaigns they had for big annual releases, like TTK and Forsaken. (Even RoI's seemed a lot more epic, and somewhat more novel, than this.) I guess that's offset against the four-seasons-a-year churn of new things to do right through the calendar that you get now. They did say, and I'm not surprised, they couldn't do all of that without killing their staff, which is fair enough. (In fact they had trouble delivering Forsaken + the annual pass content, so I don't expect to see even that much this year.)

I checked out of Destiny 2 a month or so after Forsaken dropped and I'd rinsed it for all it was worth. Hugely enjoyed that expansion but the Season Pass didn't really appeal to me at the time so I decided not to get it and was happy to go off for the best part of a year and play and enjoy other things.

Coming back now for Shadowkeep has been a really great experience because not only do I have the new expansion to enjoy but all of the last year's seasonal content too, as that was provided free for all Forsaken owners. I dipped back into the game a few days before Shadowkeep dropped and played through the Black Armoury stuff which was good fun and gave me some nice weapons to enjoy for this expansion. Haven't even touched Gambit Prime, Reckoning and the Menagerie yet and on top of all the exotic quests over the past year and the post-story Shadowkeep stuff that's now opened up I have a veritable smorgasbord of content to play through. I love the feeling of opening up the quests tab and having a seemingly endless choice of things to do and pursue. As a dedicated player of FFXIV that feeling of being overwhelmed by choice of things to do is to me what an MMO should be like and I think Bungie have finally realised how they should go about providing this.

I also really like the way that they've clocked that the RPG elements were a crucial and massively undercooked element of the game, especially in the pared-down simplistic systems of vanilla Destiny 2, so to see them returned and expanded and giving players meaningful choices should they wish to pursue them with mods, gear, stats and genuine build diversity with the likes of the Seasonal Artifact is right up my alley. It's all good shit as far as I'm concerned and I hope they continue to expand that aspect even further.

It remains to be seen if their new plan of smaller but more consistently regular seasonal updates over the next year will work but maybe no longer being under the yoke of Activision has given them the freedom to pursue it in the manner that they really wanted to all along. Bungie were quite open in tempering people's expectations for this expansion in comparison to Forsaken and although I think the story content is far from their best I also think that the complaints of Shadowkeep seeming a bit lean at release may be a little premature as we still have the new raid, new dungeon, new strike, Vex Offensive and harder difficulty Nightmare Hunts to come. I really don't think people are going to be short of things to do in the coming months and I would far rather smaller but more consistently engaging drops of new content every couple of months or so than one big splurge each autumn and then fuck all to do over the next year. I think the last year's seasonal structure will have taught them a hell of a lot in terms of how to deliver the kinds of experiences they want and that will keep people engaged.

Game's in a great place right now and coming back to it after the best part of a year really shows how much Bungie have learned in attempting to make this huge unwieldy beast of a game.

I think it’s vastly short of Forsaken at launch, but I expect this will have a very long tail. Forsaken just got better over the first three weeks, but then it just looped back on itself. I reckon this will run longer.

But as a launch proposition it’s not a patch on Forsaken. All those bosses, each with a different mechanic, compared to the same go-immune-and-spawn-adds thing pretty much right the way through. No contest.

Love the new guns though. The sound effect on the Eris sniper is wondrous.

S'fine here.

There were definitely some server issues earlier but they settled fairly quickly.

Played a load of strikes tonight and got myself to 806 power. The game is such a good PC port.

I am just playing Forsaken at the moment. One of the quests steps asked me to complete a "challenge" How do I find one of these to do? I presume it is one of the weekly ones, but I cannot find how you start them.

Challenges are highlighted on the destination or planet maps or next to the activity (Strike/Crucible/Gambit).

Normally by yellow dots which tell you what to do to complete it.

As a newcomer to the game, it really is very overwelming when you start.  So many things to do and it's hard to know what to do first.

I'd say the best thing to do when you're starting out is just follow the story (red "Red War" icon on the map for the initial storyline, after that it'll be Curse of Osiris starting on Mercury, then Warmind on Mars). Don't worry about stats and builds past getting the highest light level equipped until you're past the Soft Cap of 900, just always stick on whatever guns and armour are the highest light and give those enemies of Humanity a damn good thrashing ;)
