Destiny 2: Lightfall

I should be hanging ineptly around before the appointed time if anyone else hasn't got it already.

Have to admit, I haven't been doing even the most obvious of engram-inducing activities lately, because I'm high 590s and therefore well beyond needing more power in order to do all the endgame stuff. I've therefore not been playing as much recently. I mean, gee, that probably means Destiny's not just about addictively chasing the highest numbers possible - blah blah blah skinner box quote I read several years ago and regurgitate without reflection like a newlywed sparrow at the least opportunity - but, if that's so, what could the point of the game possibly be? I guess we'll find out when we try, and fail despite our advanced power levels, to beat the raid tomorrow night, and do all that stuff like Shattered Throne, and Banner, and all the Nightfall max scores, next week. The hard stuff that takes skill and dedication to master. It's a bit out of order really, this turn of events - who'd have thought Destiny's not just about chasing numbers, but about engaging with challenging content and overcoming it through persistence, skill, and teamwork?

No-one who's not actually tried it, evidently. Like K said, it's a very enjoyable challenge, this one. See you tomorrow night.

And then theres the soulless grind for Braytech weapons for a "title" and/or emblem.....

Seriously if I ever have to go to Mars again after I get them, it'll be too soon!

Are these the weapons you get from the vendor engrams? You can buy the relevant materials from spider and cash them in... I spent 200 shards on mats and got 3/4 back after sharding everything I didn't want to keep

Interesting "glitch" found by joining someone doing the current Titan heroic adventure, complete with the original soundtrack:

Sorry, what am I supposed to be seeing here? Or is it just hearing the TTK notes? Cos that music is known to be in the game.

You can't just buy them. They're the ones you get for handing in Braytech Schematics. These only occasionally drop when you open sleeper nodes on Mars, and the weapon you get for handing one in is RNG-based - you often get a duplicate of one you've had before, rather than a new one. You'll probably have to do hundreds of nodes to get them all, and that requires an awful lot of resonate stems (4x the previous number, obvs). It's doing countless patrols and PEs for them that's the real grind.

Four of the five weapons are like that anyway. The fifth - Braytech Osprey - can only be got as a special drop from the Strange Terrain nightfall. Again, that's RNG, although your chances of the drop are improved by scoring high in each run.

Having all the weapons is one component of the requirements for the Wayfarer title. So if you're after that, depending of course on luck, it can be a bit of a pain.

Edit: just for clarity, the required Braytech weapons are:

  • Winter Wolf (auto rifle)
  • Frigid Jackal (sniper)
  • 18 Kelvins (sidearm)
  • Niflheim Frost (scout)
  • Osprey (rocket launcher)

So anyway, hold on.

What have we got next week?

  • Iron Banner week
  • Double / Triple Valour week
  • 50/50 Malfeasance quest Gambit boss week
  • Shattered Throne week
  • The opening week of Festival of the Lost

Plus, this is the week I thought we'd finally have a full raid team together for several nights. Ha ha, as if that was ever going to work. Help. FFS Bungie, stahp!

If it also turns out to be the week that Strange Terrain is on the Nightfall rotation - yes, I am going for the Wayfarer badge - I'm going to have to delete the game for exceeding its statutory content limit.

Srsly tho they probably could do with a slightly more even pacing of content across their schedule.

For anyone who hasn't got it already... apparently it's EP shottie week as well. (Edit: nope, it's not. It's all three weapons.)

I think I know what's happening the week after, though. Red Read Redemption 2 is released. Hmm.

Ooh, I had the sniper and sidearm and didn’t realise they were anything special.

I see - I thought getting the nodes for sleeper was bad!!

Just having a mess around the Whisper heroic mission for the chests and the synth-techno main theme remix in there is absolutely banging and the best thing about the game. Another example of Bungie gatekeeping the most premium content for the terminal-nothing-better-to-do.

Was pointed out that a download of this is available free via the Bungie rewards on your Bungie profile. Get it, put on your best FWC gear, pop a Tincture and you’ll be having the best Space Disco

Thats not the issue. Its getting duplicates of the weapons. I've had the sidearm, the scout and the sniper many, many times from the schematics, and the schematics drop so infrequently it almost feels like Xmas when you do get one.

The best way to farm the weapons, post-forsaken anyway, is to farm the nodes for a schematic, then once you have that one, stop and go do whatever else you want to in the game. You can then continue farming for it after the daily reset, as the schematics rarely drop, if ever, after the first one each day. No idea why, as it wasnt like that prior to Forsaken.

I am the luckiest motherfucker on my raid team. Last week I got the raid Hand Cannon with the curated roll* (one of the best weapons in the game right now). Last night I got the raid Scout Rifle ... with the curated roll. On top of that, I got the raid Pulse Rifle from a chest, not with the curated roll, but still with a very good roll (full auto, high-caliber rounds, high-impact reserves).

*Getting the HC at such an early stage almost makes up for the time I spent in Destiny 1 without ever having Hawkmoon ... almost. ;)

What's the deal with getting the third seed of light outside of the raid? According to this, it should be the reward for finishing the Gateway Between Worlds/oracle offering stuff but I've done this for the last two weeks but still don't have the seed to unlock my final new subclass. I just got Dreaming City weapons and armour both times. I'm at 542 so not quite ready to raid yet but am desperate to try some giant arc fireball beam action.

Nah, the most annoying, soul-daggering sound you will hear is the high-pitched squeal when the Thousand Voices drops for a teammate

Just checked that out. Looks decent, like an alternative to Sleeper.

Have we discovered the secret Bungie use to make exotics?

Bless, he keeps going after he's discharged some glimmer. What a trooper.

He's shooting blanks in my game since I've still had fuck all Y2 exotics.

I got a seed from the campaign and two more from blind well for my titan so I'm guessing you can do that. Of course, if there is a non rng way to get a seed then even better

Worth noting that I think another seed only drops once you’ve fully levelled up all the nodes on your new ability.

I got one from the campaign, one from the queen and the final one dropped from a tier 2 well immediately after I maxed the new sub class (incidentally the well is brilliant for levelling the sub class as it can be just super after super!!)

You definitely don’t need to complete one before getting another, as I had two on the first skill at once.

Couldn't be bothered doing minor-gain challenges on the Titan or Warlock last night, so thought I'd see if I could get my Hunter, who was level 42, up to endgame speeds.

Was certainly a very different way to play the game. I popped a fireteam medallion and essentially hopped from planet to planet, doing public events and lost sectors until I'd completed all the vendor bounties, making sure I had appropriate ghost shells equipped. It felt very much like old Destiny. I ran loops of Mercury killing minotaurs with fusion rifles FFS. As soon as my Hunter hit level 50 I passed over my big-boy weapons, did the collections trick and ended the night on 546 power. I'd saved the Flashpoint turn-in until I hit max level and that gave me a Foetracer with a nice little power bump.

Not sure it's something I'm keen to repeat, but it did make me wonder whether Bungie needs to find another way to make XP matter past the level cap. I certainly don't want to go back to the days of doing bounties to unlock weapon perks, but it did feel a bit like those days, and I think I quite liked it? Except for Mercury of course.

Bit intimidated by this week's reset. Tonight's probably the only night I'm getting on this week, and I don't even know where to start. Shattered Throne probably.

I wasn't particularly keen on the raid scout, Transfiguration, mainly because I was using it in the raid, and most of those encounters are medium-short range. My lovely Nation of Beasts raid hand cannon was hilariously outclassing it. But this morning before work I decided to venture back into the ascendant plane to get the four knight kills, and find Toland. In there, Transfiguration is pretty lethal. For controlled long-range affairs, it's pretty special. :)

Someone - not me, I’m busy - should develop an app that uses the API to identify weapons with the best roll and flag them to the player. I can’t be bothered with the faff of bringing up a new weapon and agonising over whether to infuse it, use it, or dismantle it - something that quickly told you whether this weapon works best with Grave Robber or Tap the Trigger (or whatever) would be useful, and you could probably crowdsource the data. Although I imagine there’d be a fair bit of block voting against whatever is the current pariah gun (Edge Transit, MIDA, etc).
