Destiny 2: Lightfall

I remember Wavy being furious once because I rerolled a Thousand Yard Stare like twice and got the supposed god roll, but a gun is only as good as its owner. Think I used it about three times.

Random rolls don’t fix the sharping problem but they do give committed players something to chase indefinitely, which makes the game about more than just the power cap and gives meaning to more than just your weekly milestones. It’s inelegant, and flawed, and a pretty bad look but it instantly puts the game in better shape.

Alright, so I played this all yesterday evening (PS4) and am really enjoying it so far. I'm totally new to Destiny. The weapons are really meaty, the environments are great and I love the MMO feel to the hub areas where you team up with randoms for the Public Events. The game's MMO and class mechanics are very poorly explained but I'm starting to understand them. I'm mid-way through the Titan missions now.

I do have some questions though, mainly about co-op:

- Can I do co-op in the Campaign missions? Even when I have a public Fire Team in a hub, they seem to vanish whenever they head outside of the hub area, same thing happens if I go off to do a side mission - i.e. in the same environment but a sub-section of it.

- How do I team up with randoms to do missions? Even when I've been around other people my level and seemingly doing the same sub-mission in hub areas, they don't seem to be on the same page and will be off to the next objective before me, or vice versa.

- How do clans work?

- Can I team up with level 30 players (who seem to be the biggest population) and does it scale down their level if I want them to join me?

- Does the PVP mode actually have players? I tried to queue in Quick Play at level 12 but it never found a single other player after about 5 minutes and I gave up.

- Where can I spend my blue currency that I get from missions? Likewise where do I spend the weird DNA strands I find around the place?

- Am I stuck with the class I chose at the start of the game? I'm Titan but it's kinda lame for a solo player.

- Is there an easier way to switch weapons in each weapon slot than go into the menu each time? I keep coming across shield enemies but don't have time to go into the menu to switch to the appropriately coloured weapon.

- Is there a mode where I can practice the super powers? Its so short I have no idea what I'm doing except mashing buttons to kill stuff.

I'm enjoying it but I really want to play the side missions and Campaign missions with other players. The game is so clearly designed around that. It's just not that fun fighting waves and waves of enemies by yourself without the variety and level design of the Halo games. But when I do team up with other players its great.

The weapons in this game are glorious, from the punchy snipers to the rattling SMGS. Some of the best gunplay I've had in years.

Thanks for any tips!

You can co-op everything after the first couple of Earth missions, I think. But it's not something that happens by any sort of automatic matchmaking. You can invite friends to your Fireteam, and then you'd stay together following whatever the Lead decides to do. If you're running round in the world, you can send invites to people in the same instance as you (or join their Fireteam, if they've set it to public.) If you want to maximise the chance of random joining, set your Fireteam to public (on the Roster screen, which you get to via the touchpad.)

Send a join request to it from the website, I think. It's not a big deal to be honest, but you may get the odd extra Engram. And being in a clan means you can see people who may not be on your Friends list.

Yes. The game in PvE has a pretty limited range where over levelled people have it easier, so it wouldn't be ridiculous.

I think PvP queuing is a bit fucked after the patch. It's supposed to be getting fixed.

For the moment, just save your Glimmer. Anything you buy (at the various NPCs on each planet) will be quickly superceded by the next drop. When you finish the game, you'll be spending your Glimmer on mods and things. Similarly with the planetary materials and Tokens.

Yes, but you can start a second or third character.

No. But you'll start to remember that certain planets only have certain enemies, and those enemies only have certain colour Shields and equip accordingly. The only difference shooting a Void shield with a Solar gun is slightly better efficiency taking the shield down, and an area of effect burst when you do (when you do so with the correct colour.) It's still better to do a shield with the wrong colour than it is to use your Kinetic gun.

Not really, no.

Thanks Mike, appreciated.

If I'm the Fire Team leader and I start a mission, I take it that my teammates will also start the mission and get the in-game dialogue/cut-scenes etc as well? Or do they just run around helping me kill things, wondering what the hell is going on? This is how I feel in the hub areas when I'm clearly helping people who are doing their own sub-missions.

Correct. What you're seeing in the world is a mix of people running round doing patrols, public events and Adventures, or just running and grinding out some kills, opening chests, trying out a new gun or similar. But if they were in your Fireteam, then yes you'd all get the same cutscene or audio explanation etc.

Oh and if anyone is fairly new to the game and wants to team up on PS4 - feel free to add me, PSN name "Jigsawn". Ima be continuing with Titan tonight and doing some more missions around the town by the Farm.

If you go here: https://www.bungie.net/en/ClanV2/Index?groupId=579822 I think you can try to join the clan. And if you see me on, then for sure send me an invite.

OK, I'm in. Had a play around and did the first couple of story missions. Man, it hasn't lost the satisfying feel at all. Completely lost at the moment though - Destiny 1 feels a very dim and distant memory.

Will try and join the clan later and give it a good blast over the weekend to see if it sticks/warrants paying for DLC etc.

Question, what am I missing out on by only having the base game? Read a bit but not very clear

EDIT: bah, the clan's full

I sent a clan request but if it's full then never mind!

Spanx you could always create a new one for us low level folks, or I can try and figure out a way to do it. There must be a bunch of new clans given the PS+ freebee so I'll have a look around online and see if I can find cool ones too.

@Alan Stock Also a fine plan. I'll keep an eye on the thread

Clan's not invite only, and there should be a (tiny) number of spaces left. Try again at https://www.bungie.net/en/ClanV2?groupid=579822 and see if it works this time. If it doesn't I'll cull some members who haven't been on for at least six months.

Says 96 for me, but regardless, there should still be room.

There aren't any great clan management tools really. I did find one site that I think showed last logged in date, which was great... but I can't remember what it was now. I might have a look later. In the meantime, https://destinytracker.com/d2/clan/579822/rllmuk-renegades is kind of ok as at least it shows people's player level and amount of time played (in PvE or PvP). You can make a good stab at working out lapsed members from that. Like, if you've been in the clan ages but are level 247 and have played a total of 16 hours, then basically you're for the chop if we need the room.

Gorf I sent the request: Jigawn.

Are you able to have multiple clans active at once ingame? Or do you have to toggle between them similar to Monster Hunter World? I think I probably will make a newbies clan.

One clan at a time, I'm afraid. Jigsawn is now in the clan.

Clan management tools are crap to non-existent. I'd rather have something you can set to just prune automatically when someone's been inactive for, say, six months. Then you don't have this constant to-ing and fro-ing where people get manually booted when we need the room, and then they message you to say they want in again, and so you boot someone else who's been inactive ages and the cycle continues. At the end of the day you still have a majority of the hundred players who don't log in very often and when they do, don't really engage in many activities that require a clan (such as raids or even nightfalls or Escalation Protocol or whatever). That hundred players probably only represents about ten to twenty who are actually active most of the time, so it'd be useful if Bungie included some sort of data about activity and some tools to manage membership based on that.

So if I stopped playing the base game around November last year (before Curse of Osiris came out), what are the key things that have changed, or that I've missed, since then? And what are the things I should look at doing if I buy either the expansion pass now, or the whole shebang when Forsaken comes out?

Here's everything that's changed since Osiris (Forsaken changes not included - spoilered for length):

Also, Xur will be about from 6pm, and may be selling exotic armour with perks - Your current exotics wont have any of the new perks on it, unless you've been lucky since Tuesday and got one to drop - example below:

40243171_10155405018680146_9131013266280

If he isnt selling any with perks, then maybe his fated engram will - I'm willing to take one for the team if reddit hasnt got the information already, as I have waaaaaaay more shards than anyone else that I know of (5k+).

Edit: Xur is at Winding Cove in the EDZ and is selling Knucklehead Radar, Vesper of Radius, Ashen Wake and Prometheus Lens - all the armour has new perks, so I assume his engram will as well (if its armour that is).

He's also selling 3 of coins, but dont waste your shards on them, they're going to be useless from next Tuesday!

Quote

Xûr’s Three of Coins: After Update 2.0.0, Xûr will no longer sell the Three of Coins consumable. The consumable will be able to be dismantled for Legendary Shards after the launch of Forsaken - Taken from here: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forums/Post/248140093?sort=0&page=0

Borealis is NOT dropping from the fated engram btw, for those not on PS4. Try next week, when it should be available as the exclusivity time should have passed by then.

PS4 for me Shimmster. PC is EZ mode and I'm harder than your loins after someone has shown you a new super-duper BBQ.

Everything is useful when people are grouped with me TBH. Although I'm pretty sure you never got anywhere on the Kings Fall raid until little old moi came along... :P
