Destiny 2: Lightfall

Grinding is fun. Farming is fun. The only question is whether the goal justifies the journey. For me, two weeks before Forsaken with other games to play, it doesn't. A few hours in you'll be getting greens and blues with a higher power rating than the thing that'll take you ten hours to get now.

Still surprised at how quickly we've gone from 'there's nothing to do' to 'ugh fuck I'm not doing all that', though. Perhaps the pendulum has swung a bit too far the other way but it's weird how quickly people forget, isn't it.

I was a bit ‘ugh, fuck all that noise’ with the Solstice stuff but have thoroughly enjoyed the ‘grind’ (hate that word) but as always it works best in co-op.

Playing the redux missions with mukr mates has been great fun. They’re tough enough now to mean you really need a fireteam and have been a real breath of fresh air over the current strikes. In fact, redoing campaign stuff has shown up  just how lacklustre a lot of the standard strikes are.

The orbs/kills stuff is mostly achieved though those missions and the extra bits can be done by farming EP for half an hour. No biggie.

The biggest pain was getting the 5 wins in crucible, which is still a bit a mess.

I've quite enjoyed the Solstice, I have to say. Maybe a few of the items were a bit grindy (the collection of the elemental orbs - which do nothing of note when you get them - was a heavy slog for the green armour) or front-loaded (the heavier grind is definitely from green to blue, rather than blue to purple) but it's been a good reason to come back and play, and it means anyone who's been away has an easy route to be at full strength when Forsaken drops.

Admittedly, I've only got the one character I care about (so I only need to do it once) but then the 3 character people are going to do it whatever!

I will probably buy Forsaken, but to be honest I quite fancy having a break from Destiny 2. I like not feeling obliged to do a milestone or finish off a grind in a particular period of time, and being able to play Dead Cells or re-play Dishonored 2, or even *gasp* watch TV or a film or something.

The other thing that’s putting me off is that to be brutally honest, Forsaken looks like a load of elf shit. If we were going to be exploring some mindbending Vex construct or the ruins of Old Chicago, then I’d be all over it, but it seems to be focused on the Awakened, who were never a faction I wanted to hear more about, and the environments look like a mix of Elfville from Lord of the Rings and some glowing clouds. That said, I didn’t really care about the Hive until the Taken King made them interesting, but the base D2 campaign didn’t particularly enrich the Cabal or their background, and I have my doubts that they will manage to turn the Awakened around either.

Of all the things to rip off from Warhammer 40K, why did they go for space elves? At least it wasn’t space orks.

Ha. For me, (and I can see why it might be a turn off) I think it's a nice change of scene. As much as the Hive are now the most-developed and interesting enemy faction, I find hanging out in Hive environments for too long a little dreary. And the opulent Roman Leviathan I've enjoyed but will be happy to leave behind. A massive dark space junk yard (Reef) and a shiny magical elf city (Dreaming City) with some kind of alternate realm (it has an Oryx-style Ascendant realm attached, I think) sounds quite enticing to me as variety. We've not really hung out with the Fallen much, so I'm interested to see the Awoken/Fallen mash-up in the Reef.

I'm totally in on Forsaken Day 1. I'm probably chilling out a little between now and then (closing the Bureau for TWO WEEKS.)

I'm one of those nutters thats Solstice'd up all 3 characters. Masterworked the lot as well. Its not much, but its a head start when Forsaken drops - the starting power level of drops will be based on your base power level, so the higher you are, the better your drops will be. That isnt changing as far as I know, just that with increased difficulty of activities comes increased power - that wont likely come into effect untill near endgame (nightfalls, higher power strikes etc).

Also the solstice armour is guaranteed 400, so its obviously a quick and easy power boost for people coming back to the game late, who may not have had the time to grind milestones for weeks, and you can have as many sets of the armour as you like for a small amount of shards and weapon parts (bought from the statue), so one for each spec if you like.

Btw, Crucible Labs is a good laugh if you havent already had a go - Its Scorch Cannons at present, which is a lot like Rumble Rockets in Halo 2 - everyone has Scorch Cannons to kill each other. Thats it. Madness.

Just realised, this week is the last week for Prestige nightfalls as they are now, so the last time you can masterwork that solstice helmet. Need to beat 110k score, so slap on those horrible modifiers to make it harder and ramp up the power level of the enemies. Decent guide video below as to what modifiers to put on:

PC EZ mode though, so will be harder on consoles.

Cruicible wins is a doddle, 100 slap kills on arc and 100 grenade kills on solar can fuck off!

Only need 98 solar and I’m done on blue....

Weirdly. I got enough and ordered the T-shirt.

That was all I was fussed about. Masterworking the armour though? Doubt I can do that as I have my mate's wedding this weekend and I've still never done a raid so no chance of my getting that part of the Masterwork.

Oh and two fucking tablets finally dropped this week so I should be able to get Sagira's Shell and probably end of 300/400

I did for of the redux missions and that was enough. The whole solstice thing just seems like a pointless grind for stuff that'll quickly become useless unless you like the cosmetics. I don't want to burn myself out on the game a few weeks before a big expansion.

I was about to post that reddit was reporting issues logging in, as well as being booted. Seems Destiny is having some maintenance, but bungie did say it wouldnt impact logins or anything else game related (other than the api - DIM isnt working for example).

Guess they were mistaken.

Edit: now offline for "emergency" maintenance

No update on when it'll be back.
