Destiny 2: Lightfall

We had a couple of runs for the Whisper of the Worm. First one was about figuring out the route to the first room with enemies, second was getting to the final room to check out the bosses and start thinking of a proper strategy that might work.

Its a pretty epic side quest with some very cool vistas and music to match. Aside from the inevitable struggle to clear the room in time, my only beef with it so far is the need to wait around for the right public event - took us well over an hour before the first one finally spawned. Oh and the fact that the ornaments for the weapon are behind eververse. What the fuck? I really like one of them as well.

Here's what the ornaments look like - 700 silver each. The mission is really nice, and the sniper is ludicrously poweful (why use any other sniper for pve content once you get the catalyst unlocked?!?), but as usual you have to balance that positivity out by trying to sell something related on Eververse, Bungie....

Bit conflicted by this. They have reverted the game to a time when Destiny, to me, meant getting carried through difficult content by better players to get loot I didn’t deserve — but have done it so late that none of those players are around anymore. Might complain about it on reddit, seems to be pretty effective these days.

More than a hint of Touch of Malice in that last skin.

I assume you have it now @Mr Ben?

Sorry Scruff, had to get some sleep, so late replying, but yep, got it last night. Team makeup was 2 hammer titans and a tether hunter. We had 2 mins and 24 secs left at the end when the last boss dropped. You dont have to clear all the adds in the last room - they all despawn on the 3rd boss' death.

The heroic version of the mission can be launched from orbit, you'll be happy to hear, so no waiting around for CABAL AGAIN?!?

You'll be happy to hear - I'll be waiting for the eternal wait to end all over again when I get back in.

That's the only part of the design here that's anything less than stellar imo - tying the mission to an event that you have to spend up to an hour or so waiting for each time for a 20-minute shot at the title that can be scuppered by one slip. They should just have made it so the first time you do it, the icon stays on your map; just like it does for the Heroic version once you complete the normal. I'd have no problems at all running this back to back, but when you fail and have to wait an undisclosed length of time before starting again, by the time you get to the start of that lengthy jumping puzzle you've just gone cold and you start resenting the upcoming journey rather than relishing it. Really bad design, that.

The rest of it though, I'm not conflicted at all about. This one mission has a sense of scale, and mystery, and journeying into a cold, hostile unknown that evokes the landscapes and challenges of the best of Destiny 1 again. And obviously a mind-bendingly good reward for those who succeed. It's when I play stuff like this that I'm reminded of why D1 stole such a large part of my heart. It's head, shoulders and torso (and possibly feet and toes) above the grindy menial gameplay-as-consumerist fare that dominates some of its supposed rivals (naming no names) and some of the stuff that resides elsewhere in D2 itself - including this week's faction rally. You can smell the imagination coming off the design of this one, the meticulous attention to detail and the masterful design. It's great to see Reddit awash with surprise, delight and praise, and discussion of tactics and load outs and strategies, and the community piecing secrets together out of the arcane fabric left as clues by the developers. Just a real sense of wonder to it.

I very much hope Forsaken does a lot more of this stuff. I may even be starting to believe.

Yeah the mission itself is excellent but the method of accessing it is dreadful, all the worst things about Destiny 1 year 1. I really hope this is just a taster of the kind of stuff we're going to get with the annual pass.

Anyone attempting the Whisper of the Worm mission tomorrow night, please respect other peoples time, even if Bungie doesnt, and watch a video showing what to do and where to go for the jumping section. I'll even put a video here, to save people looking for one:

Good luck to those attempting it tomorrow, or whenever (hopefully it stays around more than this week).

Think its now 15 or 16 ( I lost count). Went to IO to see for myself. 3 more Cabal events have happened. Ridiculous. Reddit will have turned from full on worship of Bungie for the new mission to absolute and utter hatred by tomorrow. I also expect youtubers like Skillup (more like Shillup) to have videos criticising this next week.

Trust someone to use the new mission to do this though:

Yeah, it's a really poor idea though - just like Trials only being at weekends. For the very reason you give: you should have the chance to plan your activities in the week alongside other activities. Also, if they don't fix the spawns, and don't decouple the event from another event that you can literally be waiting for for hours, that's not a great way to spend a weekend. Well, any time during the week really, but if they compress this to weekends only it makes it sting all the more.

So yeah, I suspect that it might be a planned, deliberate, regular weekday absence, but I also hope they're simply taking it down to fix it. My Bungie senses are tingling though, and I think it might be on the Xûr timer, and is working as intended. It's intended that you might have to wait up to three hours or more for your next 20-minute window. If so, regardless of how good the mission is - and it is - then fuck that.

Make it so you can play it without its appearance depending on a semi-random event and I can live with the Xûr timer.

Between this and EP, it feels a bit like waiting around for stuff to happen is part of Bungie's design philosophy - or at least, not being able to easily select something from a menu and spawn directly into it. The idea behind this sort of thing is great, but the whole waiting around thing is pretty shit - it's not like anyone thought that the No Time to Explain quest, where you had to find those hidden chests in the Vault of Glass, was poorer for being able to start the mission whenever you liked. Although in fact, now that I think of it, wasn't the original deal with that quest that you could only select it when Paradox was one of the daily heroic missions? They changed it eventually so that you could select it from the director. Hopefully Bungie will change this as well.

Black Spindle was the same wasn't it?  They locked it behind a Daily Heroic, and then eventually acquiesced along with No Time to Explain.  You think they'd have learned by now, especially after then mess of this past year.

Yeah and a lot of people were pissed that it was constantly only appearing on weekdays until Bungie eventually listened to the feedback and had it on a weekend.

They seem to be un-streamlining the game, which is an odd approach to take with a game that's being continuously updated. Like, unless I'm misinterpreting, they seem to have removed the challenges from the Crucible quickplay playlist, so that if you want to do some objectives and earn tokens, you have to go to the Tower and buy the Shaxx bounties. I'm fine with them adding bounties (although actually picking them up is an annoying faff), but removing one of the key quality of life improvements of D2 at the same time is a bit weird.

Is there a word for doing the opposite of streamlining? Presumably, there's never been a need for it before as nobody would ever deliberately make something more awkward and inefficient.

Redditing.
