Destiny 2: Lightfall

I was just about to post the exact same panel. An amazing culmination of all the lore threads they built up over the three years of D1.

I wasn't the only one who was concerned. Saint-14 tried to break through and make Osiris understand what was coming.

"Now I remember what it is we're fighting to protect," intoned Saint-14. His words were as solemn as the winter sky.

"What," asked Osiris. "Exactly what is it that you are so determined to give you life for? And... mine?"

The mighty Titan stared at the ground, unmoving, for what seemed an eternity. Under his large, softly glowing purple helmet the Warlock thought he detected a stifled sob.

"WHAT THE HELL IS IT YOU SEE?" demanded Osiris.

There was a beat. Saint-14 looked up to the sky.

"Pigeons."

"What?"

"It's pigeons. They're the only birds who still shit up the Tower, y'see. The others - sparrows, chaffinches, all that crap - they all fucked off. Only the pigeons are left..."

"What the actual FUCK?!"

"... well, there's those massive fucking dragonflies as well, but they're not birds, are they?"

"Seriously, all this shit over some fucking pi-"

"THEY ARE ALL THAT STANDS BETWEEN HUMANITY AND OBLIVION, DON'T YOU SEE?!! Well, them and the massive dragonflies. Seriously though, have you seen the SIZE of those things?"

"Ok, fuck this."

"IT'S SOMETHING WE SHOULD BOTH BE FIGHTING FOR!"

"Ah, fuck off."

"Ok then, let's have a punching contest. First one to flinch has to be in the DLC. Other one gets to die."

Disregarding the lore, which Bungie has seemingly already done judging by whats in Destiny 2 (or rather, isnt), and that naff comic, heres what Bungie has to say on the 3 of coins issue:

Quote

Three of Coins Functionality

Hey all,
Throughout the weekend, we’ve been monitoring player feedback concerning the recently added Three of Coins consumable offered by Xûr. We’d like to give clarification on the functionality of this item:

When players use a Three of Coins consumable, this provides a 50% increase to the base chance of being rewarded an Exotic Engram upon activity completion. Using this consumable does not guarantee an Exotic reward upon completing a set number of activities – but rather increased chances upon each activity completion.

Note: We have found that Heroic Strikes do not currently grant higher chances for Exotics when using Three of Coins consumables, compared to Vanguard Strikes. We’re looking to address this with a future Hotfix, expected in early 2018.

We will continue to monitor and forward feedback concerning this feature throughout the holiday season. Keep it coming!
Later this week, we’ll have notes from the development team on additional feedback items that we’re looking to address in the future. Stay tuned.

Cheers,
-dmg04

English

Another reason to not play Heroic Strikes. I have to wonder what the base % chance of getting an exotic actually is. Probably 0.04%, because like our Ghost, they've proven they're not that good at math.

Oh, interesting. I got smashed using it but then again I'm not a good PVP player.

I suck too, but it's the most effective counter I've found to that thing where you kill one player, then die to his pal because you're on low health. That instant regen makes a big, big difference. You do kinda need headshots, sure, but then that's kinda the case with most hand cannons anyway.

Meanwhile, a Bungie forum post about the state of Masterworks, including confirmation that they're expanding the system to armour.

Since the release of Destiny 2 Update 1.1.1.1, we’ve been monitoring player feedback concerning the Masterworks. We’d like to give you a list of items that’s on our list to address. We don’t have a specific date for when these changes would take place, but we’d like to give insight as to what teams at Bungie are aiming to accomplish:

Player acquisition:

• We’re implementing a new mechanism that we can use to limit long dry spells in Masterwork drops due to bad RNG.
• We will also be looking at adding some guaranteed sources of Masterworks, but we are working on a broader plan to improve prestige activity rewards and it might wait until then.
• We’re watching overall drop rates and usage over the holiday and will adjust drop rates and material costs as needed.

Masterwork Inventory Management

• We’re planning a fix for Masterwork Cores not going to your postmaster if you’re full on Consumables.
• To help prevent accidental loss of Masterwork Cores, we're extending the dismantle timer to give players a larger window to stop the process.

Stat Bonuses

• Right now, the stat bonuses are small tweaks intended for players who want to optimize very deeply. We’re watching feedback and are excited to adjust or add more stat bonuses in the future. Once we have more information, we’ll share our plans with you.

Additionally, the in-game UI currently doesn’t have a good way to show all of the possible stat rolls. Here is the current list of Stat Bonuses that can roll per weapon type:

Auto Rifle
+5 Range
+10 Magazine
+10 Reload
+10 Handling

Fusion Rifle
+5 Stability
+10 Reload
+10 Handling

Grenade Launcher
+5 Stability
+10 Reload
+10 Handling
+5 Blast Radius

Hand Cannon
+5 Stability
+10 Magazine
+10 Reload
+10 Handling

Pulse Rifle
+5 Range
+10 Magazine
+10 Reload
+10 Handling

Rocket Launcher
+10 Reload
+10 Handling
+5 Projectile Speed
+5 Blast Radius

Scout Rifle
+5 Range
+10 Magazine
+10 Reload
+10 Handling

Shotgun
+5 Stability
+10 Reload
+10 Handling

Sidearm
+5 Stability
+10 Magazine
+10 Reload
+10 Handling

Sniper Rifle
+5 Range
+10 Reload
+10 Handling

SMG
+5 Range
+10 Magazine
+10 Reload
+10 Handling

Sword
+10 Magazine
+5 Impact

Masterwork Armor

• We have begun plans to add Masterworks to Armor as well.
• The Armor bonuses will be more modest than the Orb generation on Weapons (in part because you have five equipped at once), but at minimum we want to provide a much requested mechanism to change the Armor stat type.

Weapon and Armor Mods

• We don’t have a firm ETA yet, but feedback on Armor and Weapon Mods has been heard!
• At minimum, we are looking to ease inventory pressure (ex: collapsing per-slot or per-class Mods)
• We’re also seeking to make Mods a more meaningful part of your loadout decisions.

The way that Three of Coins work seems fundamentally wrong to my eyes. The way they worked before was great, as it felt like they had a tangible effect – you got the anticipation of popping another one each time you killed a boss or completed a crucible round, and you very rapidly felt like you were getting results. Plus, they lasted indefinitely and were cheap – it was an enticing little gameplay loop, a bit like eating a particularly compelling biscuit.

The way they work now – i.e. the way they are supposed to work - seems a lot vaguer. They’re an expensive, long-duration item that increases the chance of an exotic dropping over a four-hour period, which seems way too long – the effect is unclear, and so drawn-out that it’s hard to tell whether something would have dropped anyway. It’s telling that people struggled to determine whether it actually worked or not. Plus, playing Destiny for four hours at a stretch doesn’t really fit in with the way the systems work now.

I also think that if you're the sort of player who has 31 legendary shards to burn like that then you're probably not especially thirsty for exotics. Couldn't believe how expensive it was for a single-use, time-limited item. Maybe if it was guaranteed to remain active beyond four hours until you got an exotic drop it'd feel a bit more justified, but as it is it just seems dumb. They've got the price of the Fated Engram right, because it's guaranteed to be valuable immediately. But 3oC pricing is just bad.

They're pretty pointless in this game anyway, to be honest, where exotics aren't hard to come by and are rarely worth chasing anyway. I've no idea why they put them in beyond wanting to give the no-lifers another way to burn through all the shards they've got saved up.

It’s also a weird addition when masterworks have made exotics even less interesting. Whilst I’ll be using Crimson when I get it, I’m much more invested in getting a decent masterwork for each slot, especially as RNG has gifted me with two already when only doing this weeks milestones and they were Uriel’s and Negative Space. I really want a masterwork better devils and a rocket launcher, and maybe to replace Uriels with an MW Valkadyn. How many cores do you get for dismantling and how many do you need to upgrade?

In the spirit of remaining positive, I've arrived at the natural evolution of the early positivity some had in this thread ("it lets you play other games now that there's no content!"), and now the game has afforded me both a bunch of additional time to play other games and the HDD space to install them! Also, it turns out Dragon Age: Inquisition is really good! Who knew?!

But yeah, I'm out. I had a mini purge the other day, because the games on my PS4 that wanted me to grind and/or tried to get me to buy IAPs were getting me down, so I deleted this, Rocket League and ESO, and I'm actually working through the backlog now, and having a whale of a time.

I would like to apologise though - every game I've ever pre-ordered with the season pass has, at best, failed to live up to expectations (most notably SFV, The Division, and now this), so I feel a bit responsible for jinxing D2 now. Sorry about that guys.

Fear not, as I'm sure will be the case with D2 12 months on, The Division is really really good now.

Ubisoft have added loads to it and as a season pass owner you'll have access to all the best new content and all the free updates.

Well worth checking it out again.

For all the angry salt on the internet about this, it's still excellent fun. I had a good post-campaign session on this tonight, knocking out my Crucible milestone (in Mayhem Clash, which was amazing fun) my Heroic Strike milestone and those added up and got my Clan milestone done as well.

And with Flashpoint, Nightfall and Raid still to do (and at the moment, no friends to do the latter two with) I've still gone from 314 Light to 323 in a few short hours. And grabbed a new Exotic or two.

I do suspect people are somewhat overstating how devious Bungie are being with XP and loot. But then it's the internet, I guess

In other news, the Dawning is OK. Mayhem Clash today is great fun. Packs of buffs giving everyone in the fireteam shaders or tokens seems OK also. 5 Mayhem Clash and 5 Strikes for a few extra tokens is a bit tight, but Christ - Mayhem Clash pays out loot like crazy.

Yep, had a bunch of fun last night and stayed up far too late. Was nice to see The Dawning kick off while I was waiting for a public event on Earth – suddenly all the snowball piles appeared and everybody just went a bit silly. While it's fun hitting other players, they're no joke on enemies – they do decent damage, and function like a suppression grenade on bigger enemies.

Mayhem's terrific, of course. Though it's quite sad really when Shaxx opens the match with "Have fun, Guardian". Bit revealing, like. Tremendous fun nonetheless, and best of all, it's over very quickly. Knocked out the Crucible milestone in about 40 minutes, and did the first step of the Dawning quest at the same time. There are too few opportunities to be efficient like that in Destiny 2, so I appreciated it. Unfortunately the next step makes you go around Nessus hunting for Datalettuce, which isn't too ideal with all these glimmering piles of snow everywhere.

Had better luck with masterworks, with three dropping in a couple of hours, but I ended up sharding two of them because the game sure does like giving me weapons I have no intention of using. They've really made sniper rifles completely irrelevant, haven't they.

Quick Bash yesterday and summary of thoughts

Tower is Pretty!

Weekly Dawngram gave ghost, not armor boo

Mayhem Clash is fun...

Snowballs are fun

Gifts...less so. Run around looking for 10 of an enemy type and 10 of a resource...didn't complete it so no idea of rewards.
