Played a couple of hours last night. Did the  flashpoints on Mercury (holy crap that was painful) and the heroic strikes milestone. Decrypted six legendary engrams, bought a couple more. Redeemed all gunsmith mats and planetary vendor tokens.

Not one single masterwork weapon dropped.

In order to turn an exciting legendary into a masterwork you need ten masterwork components. You get these from sharding masterwork weapons. I don’t have any of those. There are reports on reddit of people cashing in hundreds upon hundreds of gunsmith parts and coming away with only a couple of masterworks.

While the orb-generating bit is appealing the other benefits on offer seem completely out of whack with the difficulty of actually getting them. I am not into this at all.

..Now I feel a bit bad for getting two masterworks after turning in around two gunsmith engrams from mats.

Then again, it was an incredibly good day yesterday - Got the reworked Ophidian Aspect gauntlets (colouring it using Calus' Selected looks DISGUSTING, in a good way), realised that Atalanta-D is a bit good (see above), and then the PC crew done a hastily cobbled together Leviathan raid only to beat it, which ended up giving a 330 Fulminator chest. Looks lovely, and has a bunch of recovery.

I'm sure there will be days that I'll get another ten prospectors, mind.

The masterworks implementation is incredibly frustrating. I had about 950 gunsmith rep doing nothing so used it all up on engrams. Ended up with about 4 masterworks weapons, which all got sharded because they are shit. That left me with not enough masterworks cores to upgrade any guns I actually do like. And even if I could, the roll would be random. If I didn't like it then I would need to wait for 3 more masterworks cores to re-roll it again in the hope for something decent.

Is this really how Bungie interpreted the feedback from the community? People wanted more to play for, more specific loot to drop from certain activities and locations to make it memorable and worth playing for, not a fuck load of RNG that may or may not make a noticeable difference to a gun you already have.

They seem to have taken a similar approach to the forging thing in Mercury. You need a load of new materials (seriously, more currencies?!) that are random drops from public events and chests. I managed to get enough for the scout rifle last week, but now need twice as many materials for the next weapon, and some other material I've never heard of that can drop from strikes or crucible. There is no way I'm bothering with that shit. Why not make weapon specific challenges that would at least mix things up - so for the scout you would need to kill x amount of enemies with a scout rifle then perhaps run a specific strike with a new boss at the end (Thorn quest anyone?).

Its such a backward step from D1. Where are the Black Spindle, Outbreak Prime or Touch of Malice equivalent quests? We had one half-hearted effort for Legend of Acrius but that's it, despite them talking about wanting to implement more of this stuff before release.

They also talked about D2 having so much story that we would be overloaded by it. What a joke that turned out to be! I genuinely thought Curse of Osiris would bring a really interesting arc given the lore around this character and his exile. Instead we barely interact with him (having a mute guardian doesn't help) and there is no real exploration of the character beyond that initial cutscene.

You were meant to be the chosen one!

Yeah they've just patched in a load of grind without realising that you have to make the goal something worth chasing.

If it helps, the mats you need from strikes seem to be a fixed drop, unlike the public-event ones which are RNG dependent. I certainly get them a lot more quickly. And you can occasionally get the upgraded version to drop, which saves you loads of time.

But, again, the weapons just aren't worth chasing. I think it's crazy that they force you to get the scout first, which requires public event mats and is worse than Nameless/MIDA anyway. Just completely off-putting. I'm one strike mat away from getting the hand cannon and then I'll probably stop.

This is one of the biggest things that killed the game for me. Everything is just so lazily implemented and there seems to be nothing that can replicate that level of excitement that Outbreak Prime or Black Spindle achieved, let alone the Gally. Even the buzz of achievement you got from the standard gear out of the Wrath raid was better than anything I experienced in my time with D2. That Slayerage video the other week really ht it home just how completely uninspiring the weapon system is now that makes snipers and shotties so redundant.

I turned it on last night after not playing for a month to check out the HDR update and, after peeling my eyes off the back of my skull, I had a momentary urge to run through the campaign again on a third character just to drink in the amazing visuals and enjoy shooting some stuff again. Then I remembered all the tedium of the endgame and the sorry state that Bungie have got themselves in and decided to carry on playing Zelda.

I really want to come back to D2 and I'm hopeful Bungie can turn it around but all this talk of more ill thought out grindathons for disappointing rewards means I'll probably just hang back a bit longer.

Earlier this week I had a chat with a colleague who does not play Destiny, about Destiny 2. It was one of the many chats I had with him about D2 and he know I am very disappointed in and with D2. At one point I said "... but what can you expect from a studio who has their A team working on Anthem".

He corrected me by stating Anthem is by Bioware, not Bungie.

Which made me mad. Not that he said it, but that it's true. What is Bungie working on?

I... I think I'm coming round a bit on Masterworks. I have two now: the second is a shotgun I'd normally shard on sight, but I'm actively using it for low-level farming things because of the orb generation which is just such a lovely thing. Yes, the drop rate appears to be very low, but it means that every potential source of a purple – be that an engram, a powerful-gear reward or a token hand-in or whatever – is more exciting, because it has the potential to be something useful even if it's a dupe. If it is, it pushes you out of your comfort zone, encouraging you to play a different way. Even if it isn't, it's mats towards another chance at one from the gunsmith, and shards you can exchange for an engram from the cryptarch. It knits everything together nicely, adding meaning to the things that previously had none.

And while I don't find the rerollable perks to be too exciting at the moment, I can certainly see the potential there. They've already said they're exploring ways to expand it to other kinds of gear, and I assume that means more than just armour. If, say, masterwork raid weapons came with raid-specific buffs, for example, then we're getting closer to the minmax endgame that people loved in D1.

Still a tremendously long way to go, of course, but this, combined with the return of heroic strikes, mean I'm actually having fun again. I want to play Destiny 2 again! Heavens.

I would not be surprised if the chance of getting masterworks is a lot lower in activities that are quicker like grinding weapon parts. one of their goals appears to be to disincentivise min maxing player behaviour.  I sharded all dupes cashing in a million weapon parts and got none. then jumped in to play cruzcible and got two within an hour. masterworks are the secret weapon of this expansion. they really should have said that the orbs are available to yourself as well. that is a massive difference. those are the most fun weapons in the game at the moment. I've got play of the game with extra handling. it is a motherfucking orb factory!

Can someone please explain masterworks in an idiot's fashion? I don't even know where to start with all that stuff...

Some legendaries have a masterwork version with an extra attribute. These attributes enhance one stat. The attribute is given when the weapon drops and they are random. They can also be rerolled. You can upgrade certain existing weapons using resources created when you shard unwanted masterwork weapons to make them masterwork versions of themselves. These resources can also be used to re roll these random attributes in your existing masterwork weapons.

Once you hit 250 power, all legendary weapons have a chance to drop as masterworks. Each generates an orb, both for you and your allies, with a multikill (the timing for which is very generous).

In addition, they come with an extra perk - boosts to stability, reload, mag size etc - that is rerollable.

To do that you need three masterwork components, which you get from dismantling unwanted masterwork weapons. With ten components you can upgrade any legendary to a masterwork.

Basically you you get a small, but appreciable, buff, and a completely game-changing orb-gen tool and goddammit Oz you beat me.

Why is the game directing me to Ikora Rey?  She has nothing for me other than meditations, I picked one, but it's still telling me Ikora has something for me...

Have you figured this out chuckie? I have the same and it is making the game near unplayable to me.:)
