EXPANSION AND SEASON ACCESS UPDATE

1h - Destiny Dev Team

With Curse of Osiris now live, it’s clear that we’ve made some mistakes with how we have handled content access. We would like to talk through the reasoning behind our decisions so far and what we are committed to changing moving forward.

The Destiny endgame features a variety of activities and playlists that we want to remain relevant to players as they grow more powerful. In Destiny 1, as your character grew more powerful throughout each expansion, some of our best content, like Vault of Glass, was left behind and lost its relevance for players. We wanted a better solution for Destiny 2, where all of our Endgame activities could stay relevant as each Expansion causes your Guardian to grow more and more powerful.

The following were our goals when we separated “Normal” and “Prestige” modes:

The Normal Leviathan Raid and Normal Nightfall would always stay at a Power level that was accessible to all players.

Prestige difficulty would always rise to the new Power cap.  It could be the pinnacle of challenge, with the most prestigious rewards, but it therefore would require you to own the latest Expansion and be at the new Power cap.

Additionally, the game provides Seasonal, time-limited PvP playlists – Trials of The Nine and Iron Banner. These activities and their rewards are meant to evolve each Season, and they utilize new maps, so they would require you to own the latest content. To play the latest season of Iron Banner or Trials, and earn the new rewards, players would need to own Curse of Osiris.

We’ve heard from the community that both of these plans aren’t working. The Prestige Raid was a novel experience that players value, even if they don’t own Curse of Osiris, and it was a mistake to move that experience out of reach. Throughout the lifetime of the Destiny Franchise, Trials has always required that players owned the latest Expansion. However, for Destiny 2, Trials of The Nine launched as part of the main game, so it’s not right for us to remove access to it.

To make matters worse, our team overlooked the fact that both of these mistakes disabled Trophies and Achievements for Destiny 2. This was an unacceptable lapse on our part, and we can understand the frustration it has created.

Therefore, this week, we will release a hotfix that will make the following changes:

The Prestige Leviathan Raid will be brought back down to Power 300, and its rewards will drop down to match the new Power Level. All players will regain access to the Prestige Raid.

This will allow access to “The Prestige” Achievement/Trophy for all players.

This will also allow all players ability to complete the final step for the Legend of Acrius Exotic Shotgun.

Trials of The Nine will only require Curse of Osiris when it features a Curse of Osiris map. For all other weeks, it will be available to all players.

This will allow access to “Lest Ye Be Judged” Achievement/Trophy for all players.

Trials of The Nine rewards that launched with Destiny 2 will still be accessible to all players.

New Seasonal Rewards that launched with Curse of Osiris, such as the new Seasonal Armor Ornaments, will require ownership of Curse of Osiris to acquire.

The Prestige Nightfall will remain a pinnacle activity, at the new 330 Power cap.

This means Prestige Nightfall will require ownership of Curse of Osiris.

Because of this, we will update “The Prestige” Achievement/Trophy to only reference The Prestige Raid.

Moving forward, we are investigating adding a 3rd difficulty to all Prestige activities, so that we can provide both a challenge that stays relevant with each new Expansion, and a Prestige version that is available to all players.

Normal Nightfall will only require Curse of Osiris when it features a Curse of Osiris map. For all other weeks it will be available to all players.

Time limited events – Iron Banner, Faction Rally, and The Dawning, will be made available to all players.

We will be postponing tomorrow’s Faction Rally, to ensure all of our players can access the activity and the appropriate rewards.

Iron Banner and Faction Rally rewards that launched with Destiny 2 will still be accessible to all players.

New Seasonal Rewards that launch with Curse of Osiris, such as the new Seasonal Armor Ornaments, will require ownership of Curse of Osiris to acquire.

We expect these changes to go live tomorrow at the end of scheduled maintenance to deploy Update 1.1.1.1. Moving forward, we are also looking to improve on Heroic Strikes, with new challenges, new Modifiers, and free access for all players.

Thank you for your patience and feedback as we work to continuously improve the Destiny 2 experience.

It's not the mistakes that rankle me the most, it's the insincere faux apologies they trot out afterwards. If you, as a company, have to put out grovelling statements that apologise for mistakes you 'didn't realise you made' on an almost weekly basis, you know you're either seriously fucking things up or you just genuinely don't give a monkeys and are going through the motions to appear to keep people on-side.

Either option is an absolute disgrace for a game developer with such a storied history.

Regarding the Lens:

So was it not play tested the first time around?

I guess the bigger question I have regarding the longer grovelling post is why is level cap tied to whichever expansion you own? What's the issue with boosting the level cap for everyone? Surely the point of an expansion is to get access to new content?

And no real mention of why heroic strikes were removed and added back in as DLC.

It reminds me of Team Fortress 2 when Valve clearly weren't properly playtesting some of the new weapons they introduced (even though they have test servers). A minigun for the Heavy was released called the Tomislav and one of its perks was really low spin-up time so you could fire it quicker, when it came out the time was so low that it basically fired instantly and it was like a bloody laser or something.

Patched within days.

They're running into problems because most games expacs, are required for endgame content. But they introduce new endgame content (including Destiny, I wasn't here for year 1 though but I assume Crota/PoE did) rather that just upping the difficulty/level of existing and locking players out.

They've now answer complaints from people who had base game content taken from them, but now there's backlash from those that did buy the DLC (and "got to keep" content they'd already paid for) saying it's made their purchase mean less.

Christ Bungie.

It doesn't, because it was never a bug. It was deliberate. I know I made a bit of fun with my conspiracy theory, but I actually believe they had that in mind with this.

If it was deliberate, wouldn't they have pitched it as LaserFest 2017, and had some supporting in-game guff about Guardians being granted access to experimental golden age weapons for a temporary period? Rather than "o god, one of our weapons has gone horribly wrong and man who fixes the weapons isn't answering his phone". It looks like they've rolled with it to a certain extent, which is probably a pretty good way of handling it, but this was clearly a mistake as it makes them look inept.

That's what you get for only having one Engineer.

Good news, in January 2018 you lot can all move to Monster Hunter World. No loot boxes, no severe lack content (probably). Plus it has bipedal cats that fight alongside you.

Played the beta, and not that keen. It just isnt for me.

Its a shame there isnt anything like Destiny out there at the moment. People always go on about Warframe and The Division, but I've tried both. They aren't even the same game-type - they're not First Person for a start.

Anthem may be decent, but it wont be first person, it wont have the gunplay, and worst of all, its by EA. It'll likely be riddled with micro-transactions. I hope that isnt the case, but it likely will be.

Destiny was something new, different from the other FPS's out there, but now it seems Bungie wants it to be indistinguishable from the rest of them, after gutting the rpg mechanics from the sequel, and sticking everything behind a cash shop. And that's put me right off, not just the game, but the company.

With a bit of luck and some desperation from Bungo they will switch Destiny back on and get the live team back in that, it may look garbage these days but it’s plays vastly better and there is loads more content to play through - still got missing guns but all of them in D2 even with 1500 hours less play time...

It doesnt look garbage though, its just a few years old now. I played it last week, on the day CoO came out no less, and it still looks good today.

I got my last Age of Triumph piece out of the weekly boxes (It has smart loot, whereas the sequel wants you to pull that lever on the gambling machine forever) so I could get the shader for owning the full set, and it had great stats (max Int+Disc) as well as perks - more rewarding in one day than Destiny 2 has been in its life cycle, as I got something I wanted.

There is no loot in Destiny 2 I actually want, as none of it makes a goddamn difference to the way the game plays.

Ohh aye, once you get past the 360 gfx it plays a dream, problem is you get used to games looking better so harder to go back without thinking it looks low rent these days (outside of the sky boxes) and I have the same issue with BF4 until you play for a bit and forget the gfx!

I still need a mythocast....

Nothing says 'exciting new patch' quite like eight hours of maintenance that runs well into EU primetime. I get, and respect, that they don't want their staff working unsociable hours but I dunno, call me old fashioned, I think the needs of a few hundred thousand paying customers should probably take precedence over Bob from IT having to come in at 2am once a month.

Yeah seems weird that I happened to have an hour to kill, couldn’t play PUBG because my kid was on the PC, remembered there was that masterwork stuff and it’s tuesday so the one milestone I can be bothered to do every week has reset, realised I’ve still not finished the piss poor curse campaign but was met with a maintenance screen. Feels like an effort to bother with at all at the moment and then it’s down anyway.
