The whole setup of the new game seems focused on you having one or two sessions per week, rather than playing it every day. I quite like that, but lots of people (justifiably) aren't keen.

Yes, as someone who never wanted to spend all their gaming time on it, I think it’s nice to dip into a bit of crucible once or twice a week. I still haven’t reached 305. No complaints from me, although I do now ignore the PVE stuff that is very obviously boring and without any satisfying reward.

For those who wanted to give their lives to Destiny, it’s a borderline disaster. Bungie should stop trying to please people like me, basically. I’ve played more COD WWII than I have this. Let it go, Bungie.

It’s pretty much impossible to be all things to all people. Focusing on people who want to dip in a few hours a week is fine, but it’s a weird choice when your first game was aimed at people who wanted to play a lot more than that and spent three years listening to their feedback and developing in line with it. It also doesn’t really work with their apparent eSports desires as that’s something where you need a really committed, really passionate group of players who want to spend hundreds of hours learning your game.

I meant generally are there problems?

It’s a decent campaign, not Mario Odyssey levels of great but still very good - the real issue is Mario has better and deeper end game content.

Splatoon 2 is much better PvP,  both 4v4 but D2 is actually dull and boring and probably the worst 4v4 I can think of :(

I have compared them to Nintendo games as you are a Switch fan but the sad thing is Destiny was great and this just isn’t after a pretty short (in Destiny terms) time :(

It's absolutely possible to appeal to the people who don't want to do endgame, and those who do. Having an involving and rewarding endgame with continued progression doesn't mean you can't make anything before it satisfying. In the early to mid-game I was generally loving the content too, and hugely looking forward to the raid and all that I thought might follow (like more stuff followed the raid in, say, TTK), including what looked to be a nailed-on Edge 9 or 10 (cos how could Bungie fuck up the raid and subsequent content after all that great early build-up, always their weakest content?).

And ultimately these 'hardcore' (ugh) and 'casual' (argh) people aren't mutually exclusive audiences with no crossover, where there is no possibility of doing both parts of the game or switching between casual and challenging modes of play - like we all used to in D1. Even DC Lemon says he ignores 'the PVE stuff as it is very obviously boring'. Even 'hardcore' people don't play every fricking night all the time. They just want a persistent world to be worth persisting in long-term, for there to be something meaningful to do in it when they return as opposed to a once-through with no further development past an early point.

So regardless of hardcoriness, I don't see D2's evident reliance on cosmetics as rewards, and its grind for cosmetics as a reason for repeated play, and the removal of lore and progression beyond the most obvious low-level stuff, as anything but a negative for any audience. Except maybe for those who don't like any form of levelling/progression/RPG elements in a game. In which case, Bungie should just make a traditional shooter like Halo again without levels and material progression, and maybe without classes and subclasses and character customisation, and stop trying to have half a toe dipped gingerly into both camps. They can stick all their microtransactions into battle packs and whatever CoD has these days if they want to do that.

The PvP is a different thing. I just think they've genuinely shit the bed there, full stop. Massively reduced the USP of Destiny and tried to be more like games that'll always be better than Destiny at what they're trying to be - you don't out-Halo Halo, or out-CS:GO CS:GO, or whatever. They just under-Destinied Destiny with D2. The space magic has gone.

So I suppose in a wider sense you're right - it is obvious that you can't literally please everyone - but Bungie need to get a far firmer hold on what game Destiny is at its heart. I genuinely thought that after a shaky start they'd built up that confident grasp a year through D1 (at TTK launch to be precise), and by the end of AoT I was sure they had. But they seem to have lost it again and be struggling to work it all out from scratch - and ironically, depending on what tonight's announced changes are, that lack of identity and coherence might become even more apparent if they flail from one approach to another. That's the biggest disappointment to me in all this, and the thing that's most shaken my confidence in what they do in the future. It just seems they're going to stumble from one half-baked implementation to another forever. They need to settle on one that's great in all phases of the game, not just the early stuff, and not just (like vanilla D1) the endgame.

See, it's as simple as that, Bungie. I'd like mine delivered next month, please. Hold the mayo.

Disillusioned Destiny players, don’t worry.

When you’re ready for it, R6 Siege will be there for you. It’s feet firmly on the ground, but it’s endgame infinite and glorious.

I have it already and I'd *love* to play single player missions against bots a la Terrorist Hunts of old if it wasn't so fucking hard. Yes I'm a filthy casual these days just give me an option that lets me do double damage and enemies half damage or whatever. Always amazes me that this kind of thing isn't in an option when you already have the maps and the AI in place??

There’s Left for Dead style PvE zombie “event” coming in February - maybe the zombies will go down easier.

I don't like zombie modes in games.

Also that makes me even angrier - they put all that effort into a brand new mode and they can't add a modifier to make it a bit easier!? :hmm:

Presumably Monster Hunter in January will pick up numerous Destiny strays. It’s certainly more comparable to be fair.

It already has one it’s called “difficulty setting” on normal they’re pathetically easy.

See how they circle and swoop!

Unfortunately, lads, the games you're trying to sell to these stiffs are... erm... not quite a fit for what's missing. Like, the main thing many of us miss, as amply detailed herein, is a co-op PvE endgame with lengthy RPG-style depth, such as raids and the like, and the grind for great gear and stuff. You know, like wot MMOs have, but less arcane. I don't think Fortnite and R6S quite fit that bill.

Like BCS and Nate say, Monster Hunter: World is the next port of call. I suspect Bungie have an idea of that, so they'll look to implement at least some changes in December and/or January to beef up the endgame of D2. But yeah, clubbing overgrown lizards on the head looks like the immediate future for a few of us. It's not really full-on competition for D2, but it's the nearest anyone's come to it for a while (since the untimely demise of The Division when its complete lack of satisfying endgame became clear. Spooky, huh?).

Anyone fancy paying nearly £60 for a load of Destiny themed tat that various game shops and Forbidden Planet couldn't manage to sell?

I wouldn't bother, it will just have 6 of the same t-shirts in it.

No exact time, no. Expect it to come in roughly the same timeframe as TWAB (early evening - early hours of the morning our time), as it's clearly a replacement for this week's edition.

I think they could (and should) do away with TWAB anyway, and simply update their blog with news as and when they've anything to actually say, instead of the regular, endlessly obscure prevarications of the weekly 'update'. Maybe they'll turn over a new leaf starting with this one.

This video encapsulates a huge set of basic reasons D2 is so fundamentally flawed imo.

I can't see myself going back to it without some wholesale changes I don't think Bungie will be willing to make.

Seeing all the D1 footage in this actually made me really sad. :( Was such a good time.

Ah, those heady days of hiding in a box waiting for your special ammo to regenerate while a giant Warhammer 40,000 man rampaged around outside.

*puffs wistfully on stochastically-ordered quantum space pipe*
